GRP-178, also known as Planet Devourers, are Gamma-Black GRPs and minor antagonists of the RPC Authority mythos' alternate canon Cosmic Embers. They are a species of amorphous, extra-terrestrial extremophiles that predate off entire planets.
Overview[]
The GRP-178 species is composed by amorphous creatures able to generate a great amount of heat, giving them the appearance of lava.
They are violent creatures and will attack any living organism, including humans and plant-based lifeforms.
By melting solid materials (be they organic or inorganic) on a molecular level and absorbing them, the GRP-178 instances can increase their body mass till they are big enough to complete submerge a planet (which an uncontrolled instance can achieve in one month or less). When this happens, the GRP-178 instances will have the planet they have submerged spontaneously combust through unknown means (possibly by heating up the planet's core to the point of combustion) and attach themselves on the asteroid fragments after the explosion, presumably entering a hibernation state after this until they land on another planet.
GRP-178 instances reproduce via cellular division.
Biography[]
The GRP-178 species was discovered when a single instance started growing on a planet called TRAPPIST-1f, endangering the Salkais (the species inhabiting the planet).
The GRPC attempted to slow down the instance's growth via cryogenic cannons and began the evacuation to save the aliens. The evacuation ships were attacked by GRP-178 via launching lava projectiles towards them, with five of them being hit. These projectiles became smaller instances of GRP-178 and attempted to breach the hull of the ships and attack the crew members inside.
While the evacuation was successful a total of 373 victims (from both the humans and the Salkais) were claimed.
