Gabi Bauer is the main antagonist of the 2023 science fiction horror film infinity Pool. At first glance, she appears to be a stereotypical tourist at the island resort of Li Tolqa, where she at first seems to be a fan of failing author James Foster. However, it's soon revealed that her, along with her fellow friends, are actually deranged criminals who avoid justice by exploiting the cloning law of the resort. While her clone suffers punishment for the misdeed, she gets away with it scot free.
She was portrayed by Mia Goth, who also portrayed Pearl from the movie X.
Personality[]
On the surface, Gabi appears to be a simple rich girl who presents herself in a joyful and bubbly fashion that attracts the interest of Foster. However, she reveals some hidden darkness inside of herself when she begins to try seducing Foster by complimenting his failed novel and playing with his ego. It's soon revealed that she is a manipulative, self-indulgent sociopath who has committed horrendous acts of violence against innocents and has used her money to avoid getting prosecuted for it. Having been using the cloning process to escape justice from the Li Tolqan government, she feels no regret for the things she's done to Foster and to others. Gabi also reveals that she was never into Foster and only toyed with his feelings to see if he would be brought down to her level. This proves that she is nothing but a remorseless shell of a person who only does things to satisfy her twisted urges and not caring about anyone else's feelings instead of her own.
Biography[]
James Foster along with his wealthy wife Em visit the island resort of Li Tolqa, where a massive celebration is on the horizon. Whilst there, the couple's marital strife is only exacerbated when the meet Gabi and her husband Alban. Gabi claims that she is a fan of the only book that James was able to get published, which catches his attention. After spending time at dinner talking about James's struggling career and Em's strained relationship with her wealthy father, they make plans to drive into the countryside the next day to enjoy the setting. The next day, the two couples drive to the beach and lay in the sun. While on the beach, James goes up to urinate in the tree and Gabi follows him. She then sneaks up behind him and gives him a hand job, which Foster strangely enjoys.
After getting drunk and having a good time, the four tourists decide to drive back to their hotel, with James in the drivers seat. However, as they depart, James accidentally hits a man and kills him. Gabi and Alban convince him to flee the scene because the police are corrupt and might not be lenient on him. However, the next morning both James and Em are arrested by the police and brought down to the station. Learning that the punishment is death at the hands of the man's son, Foster attempts to convince the police chief to be merciful. He learns that he can avoid being killed by paying a hefty fine to clone himself and let that clone suffer the punishment. James readily agrees and goes through with the procedure, but learns afterwards that he must bear witness to the execution. When the execution comes, the clone of James begins crying as the boy begins to stab him repeatedly, with James bearing a tantalized expression.
When the execution is concluded, Em decides to head home early, disturbed by what has just occurred. James however, claims that he lost his passport so they decide to stay a bit longer until they find it. Eventually, James runs into Gabi and Alban again, and they introduce him to fellow elites who had committed serious crimes that were avoided due to the cloning law. The group soon get him high on drugs and begin partying, where a massive orgy occurs. Not long afterwards, the elites drive to a massive mansion where they break in and assault the inhabitants. Holding the people at gunpoint, Gabi tries to get James to pull the trigger. Before James can go through with it, another inhabitant comes out of nowhere and shoots at the group, injuring one in the leg. Gabi kills the man with a sadistic smile on her face as they leave. The police soon arrest the elites and perform another clone execution, with the others watching.
Em, unable to recognize her husband anymore, decides to leave. James only spitefully tells her to run home to her father. Having become corrupted by the group and wanting some payback, the elites claim to have kidnapped the police chief and urge James on to get some payback. Beating him and urinating on him, James eventually kills him in a mad rage. However, after taking the bag of his head, he realizes that he killed another clone of himself instead. As the other elites mock him and laugh, James leaves the house and heads back to his hotel room. Receiving his passport from under the sink (where he intentionally hid it to have an excuse to stay), James decides to leave the resort before the others find him. Taking a bus the next day to return to the airport, Gabi and her crew hold the bus hostage and threaten to kill him if he doesn't come out of the bus on his own accord. With no choice, James exits and his forced to walk with Gabi holding him at gunpoint. At this point, Gabi reveals that he never read his book and was only playing on his ego to become a criminal like her. She explains that the others were also in on it and that this was just entertainment for their vacation. However, after Gabi drops her bottle of wine, James makes a run for it. The elites chase him and Gabi manages to injure him in the leg. After walking for a long time, he is taken in by a farmer's couple as they nurse him back to health. However, he begins to hallucinate the son of the man he murdered choking him. Unfortunately, the elites arrive and bring a feral clone of James and orders him to kill it. At first James refuses, but then is forced to as the feral clone attacks him. Broken in mind and spirit, James cries as Gabi lets him suck on her nipple for comfort.
The next day, as the murder tourists discuss random topics, James is left shattered over what had happened to him and what he has done. As Gabi bids him a farewell, James decides to stay at the resort despite there being a warning of an oncoming monsoon. As the rain pours and wind blows, James sits and watches the tide rise with a steely-eyed expression, unable to return to the life he once knew.
Trivia[]
- It has been hinted at many times that those who go through with the cloning procedure are actually replaced by their doubles, which means that Gabi Bauer we see in the film may not be the real Gabi.
- Mia Goth also starred in her first villain role in X and Pearl, playing the titular character one year before this film was out in theatres.
