~ Gabriel's suicide. |
Gabriel is a supporting character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is a Clipper who defected to Quinn's side after his territory was taken over by his son Ryder. As the youngest Clipper, Gabriel is desperate to prove himself, and overtime becomes brainwashed and indoctrinated by Quinn's teachings, willing to kill and even harm himself for Quinn.
He was portrayed by John Bell.
Personality[]
As the youngest Clipper out of Quinn's loyalists and a former Colt, Gabriel is the least experienced out of the group and thus the least accustomed to killing. He is shown to be intimidated by Quinn, even trying to run away from the bunker on at least one occasion, but is also determined to prove that he can be a great Clipper as well, especially after Quinn takes a particular interest in him. During the attack on the Conclave, Gabriel kills for the first time, and is shown to greatly enjoy it, showing that Quinn's brainwashing was setting in and making Gabriel enjoy acting ruthless. This special interest was enough to fully convert and corrupt Gabriel overtime into a cult-like follower, to the point he was ultimately willing to murder an innocent person in the Butterfly Territory and act as a suicide bomber for Quinn without any hesitation, under the belief that he would be reborn as a God.
Biography[]
Proving himself to Quinn[]
Following Quinn's position as Baron of the Armadillo Territory being taken by his son Ryder, Quinn went into hiding with a group of loyalists, including Gabriel. As the youngest member of the group, Gabriel was the only one who hadn't killed before, and was taken on several hunting missions in order to kill deer so that he could prepare for the act of killing humans. One day, Gabriel attempted to run away from the bunker, as he feared Quinn, but was caught and brought back. Quinn brought Gabriel into his chambers, but rather than execute him for attempted desertion, he told Gabriel that he believed in him, saying he knows he could become a great Clipper similar to the likes of Sunny, but he had to prove himself. He instructed Gabriel to cut him, handing him a blade that he was given back when Quinn himself was a Colt. Gabriel proceeded to cut the back of Quinn's hand, pleasing him. After this, Gabriel was sent into Ryder's fort as a spy, in order to let in Quinn's forces during the upcoming Conclave, a meeting between Barons. Gabriel was briefly caught by Jade, but managed to convince her he was simply a new house Cog she had not met before. After this, Gabriel successfully killed several of Ryder's Clippers and let in Quinn and his Clippers so they could crash the Conclave, enjoying the act, and now becoming fully indoctrinated by Quinn's ideology.
Sending a message[]
Gabriel continues to serve Quinn in his conquest for the Badlands for several weeks, up until Quinn allies himself with the Widow. After the Widow trades Veil and Henry back to Quinn, he decides that he needs to send a message to the Widow and Sunny, who has begun working with the Widow, that the alliance has ended. Quinn brings Gabriel back into his chambers, and gives him ice cream, informing Gabriel that he is the only person other than Quinn himself out of the loyalists to have tasted ice cream. This gains Gabriel's trust completely, and Quinn gives him an incredibly twisted task: act as a suicide bomber in the Widow territory, informing Sunny that the Widow traded his wife and child back to Quinn, so that Sunny will abandon her and the two will no longer be allies against Quinn. Gabriel agrees to this, and poses as a runaway Cog seeking sanctuary in the Widow territory in order to get inside. After getting in, Gabriel holds a Butterfly Clipper at knifepoint and demands to see the Widow, who arrives to see what is happening alongside Sunny. Gabriel then reveals to Sunny everything, the fact that the Widow allied herself with Quinn and also traded Veil and Henry back to him. This enrages Sunny, but before he can attack the Widow, Gabriel blows himself up, killing several people and injuring Sunny and the Widow. After his death, Quinn declares to his followers that Gabriel's death was an act of ascension, killing himself in an inferno, and proclaiming that Gabriel will be reborn a God, just as they all will if they give their life for his cause.
