~ Gabriel's villainous breakdown upon his first defeat at the hands of V1, and his most famous quote.
Gabriel is the main antagonist of the video game Ultrakill.
The angelic agent of the Council, he is feared and respected throughout Heaven and Hell for both his kindness and ferocity, proving willing to help certain groups of Hell's denizens while putting down insurrectionists such as King Minos and King Sisyphus without hesitation. He is labelled as a Supreme Angel, and debuts in Level 3-2, "In the Flesh".
Sent back down to Hell to combat the genocidal robot V1, Gabriel is defeated by it and thus, humiliated and defamed in the Council's eyes, embarks on a quest of vengeance to face it again. However, upon his second defeat, Gabriel realises the futility of the cause he fights for and, massacring the Council, prepares to face off his arch-nemesis once and for all with hours of his life left.
He is voiced by Gianni Matragrano, who also voices Cynte from Endoparasitic,Stalker from Warframe, Satan in the upcoming game ANTONBLAST, and Sebastian Solace in Pressure.
Gabriel is an angel that wears white (light blue in certain pieces of art) armor with gold details, as well as a white loincloth. His helmet resembles that of a crusader's and has a gold cross in its center. He can manifest a pair of blue horns and wings made of energy as he wishes. On his hips he has two scabbards for his two swords, Justice and Splendor, though he doesn't use them in battle. When enraged, his wings and halo turn yellow.
As the Apostate of Hate, the white portions of Gabriel's armor turn red with his wings and halo remaining yellow, signifying his rage. He also actively wields Justice and Splendor in this state.
In his former appearance, he had two katanas on his hips instead of Justice and Splendor.
Personality[]
When first encountered, Gabriel presents himself as an arrogant angel with a holier-than-thou attitude, frequently belittling V1 for being a manmade object unlike a divine being such as himself. As such, he frequently taunts it during his battle, which the machine takes advantage of to attack him while Gabriel is off guard. After his first defeat by V1, Gabriel shows a more vengeful side of himself as he curses the machine for beating him, dropping his righteous and proper attitude for one filled with malice. Despite this, Gabriel is still rather merciful as he warns V1 beforehand that it doesn't belong to Hell and informs it of the combat expected at the end of its journey in Gluttony.
During his second encounter, Gabriel is notably more emotional and vindictive, expressing his anger at V1 for taking everything away from him and his intentions to make it suffer for all it's done. Likewise, his taunts show off his maddened state, with Gabriel now beckoning V1 to fight him with all its might and ranting angry threats. However, once defeated by V1 again, Gabriel now shows a more introspective view as he leaves to ponder his defeats at the hands of the machine. As described by his Terminal Data, Gabriel now gains a newfound respect for V1 as his equal and hopes to fight it once more.
The numerous pieces of text in the game give further elaboration to his character. From what is gleaned, Gabriel appears to not be malicious but merely strictly adherent to the law. This is shown that while he mercilessly slaughtered both Minos and Sisyphus, sealing away their souls, he is also revered by many of Hell's denizens such as the Ferrymen for being a kindly and good steward of Hell, with Gabriel even saving the one V1 fights from drowning in the past, showing that despite his cruelty Gabriel does believe in redemption and is willing to help sinners in times of need, with a hologram of him in a Ferryman's ship assuring sinners of their inner goodness. It's also shown that Gabriel was only sent down to fight V1 in the first place to stop its rampage through Hell which had eradicated life from both the layers of Limbo and Lust. Nonetheless, Gabriel is still villainous as once he realized that the Father's will that he served was false and warped, he slaughtered the Council for perpetuating it and displayed one of their heads to the crowds of Heaven.
Biography[]
Background[]
At some point in the distant past, Gabriel was appointed leader of the angels for his might and, after the Father’s disappearance, the main agent of the Council. During the revolutions of both King Minos and King Sisyphus in the Lust and Greed layers specifically, Gabriel was tasked with leading the angels to put them down, as while Minos had only stopped the punishment of sinners by reforming the layer into a utopia, Sisyphus had begun forming an army to take up arms and go to war with Heaven. He murdered the peaceable King Minos first, striking him down as Minos attempted to negotiate with him. He declared it justice and stated that the Lord's Will must be carried out, as Minos' people watched. Next, Gabriel noticed that Sisyphus' armies relied on his leadership and thus, targeting and killing the king first, Gabriel and the angels scattered the demonic forces and managed to purge them with ease. It's also mentioned that when the Leviathan's heart that contained its components' souls tried to escape, Gabriel pinned it back down to the beast using his angelic spears, leaving the beast to haunt the newly formed Ocean Styx. With order returning to Hell, Gabriel took up Minos' position as Judge of Hell, with the angels also imprisoning the souls of Minos and Sisyphus in flesh prisons as well.
Despite this apparent carnage, Gabriel is shown to be kindly to certain denizens of Hell as it's mentioned in a Ferryman's diary that Gabriel once saved them from drowning and in said Ferryman's boat, there is a hologram of Gabriel telling sinners to rest and assuring them of their inner goodness. He also appears to be rather active in interacting with the sinners and it's shown that certain sinners, filled with their remorse for their actions, have prayed and begged for him to help him redeem them, though it appears an individual whose corpse can be found in-game tried doing so but died without their wish ever being heard.
Ultrakill[]
Act 1[]
Summoned by the Council to put an end to V1's rampage, Gabriel appears in the second level of the Gluttony layer. Before his physical appearance, Gabriel warns the machine that it doesn't belong here, but as V1 goes ahead anyways, Gabriel appears before it and battles it. Despite his efforts, V1 outmaneuvers Gabriel and defeats him. Insulted that a mere machine could be his match, a furious Gabriel curses V1 for its gall before warping back to Heaven.
After returning to Heaven, the Council, stating that one possessing the Father's might should be invincible, chastise Gabriel for his loss, believing him to be squandering its power. Gabriel attempts to reason that V1 was too strong for him, but his plea falls on deaf ears, as the Council accuse him of heresy for believing a mere machine could overpower the Father's will. As such, Gabriel has the Father's light removed from him as a punishment, which would kill him in a day's time unless he successfully eliminates V1. Now in constant, burning pain and with vengeance on his mind, a now-livid Gabriel sets out once more to right his wrong.
Act 2[]
While he doesn't physically appear here, Gabriel's voice is heard in the first level of the Heresy layer. He reminds V1 of its crimes and beckons it down into Hell to face him. His voice is once again heard in the second level, where he accuses V1 and the machines of completely eradicating all life from the Lust and Limbo layers with Gluttony collapsing as well. He also claims that V1 has taken everything away from him, leaving him with nothing more than "perfect hatred". When finally encountered, Gabriel is found playing the pipe organ and, noticing V1, declares that he will destroy it and enjoy every second of torment he delivers. Thus, V1 and Gabriel clash once again, but unsurprisingly, the angel is defeated a second time. At first, Gabriel is furious at being defeated once more by a manmade being, but after noticing his wounds spilling blood, he remarks that he feels a sense of relief and confusion. After this, he leaves to ponder this matter privately, but not before promising to fight V1 again.
Later on, Gabriel contemplates his loss at a campfire, reflecting on how he'd killed so many in the Father's name, yet the Father's Will could not help him defeat V1. This is when Gabriel realizes something: the Father was truly gone, and that his will that the Council preached of was warped and misguiding the masses, which is when his nihilistic views first began to develop. Hoping to show the people of Heaven the Council's deception, Gabriel goes off and slaughters them all. As the last Council member lays on the floor at his mercy, he begs Gabriel to spare him due to his status, but Gabriel merely states that the Council is in truth, powerless and that he will liberate Heaven of their corruption, showing them that nothing can stop a sword's edge. In a desperate attempt, the Council member states that without him, Gabriel cannot reconnect to the Father's light and will die in hours, which the angel acknowledges before swiftly beheading the last councilman.
With his massacre done, Gabriel presents the councilman's head to the masses outside, and without a word, departs back to Hell to challenge his robotic adversary one final time.

Trivia[]
Many of Gabriel's voicelines such as "You make even the Devil cry!" reference the video game series Devil May Cry, a video game series that heavily inspired Ultrakill. Likewise, his two swords Justice and Splendor are references to Dante's guns Ebony and Ivory.
Originally, Gabriel's color pallet when enraged served as his main design, although this was later swapped around with his white-and-gold color pallet for being a bit too similar to Iron Man.
According to the game's main developer Hakita, most of Gabriel's taunts were improvised by Gianni himself.
Due to the positive reception for his portrayal of the character, Gianni Matragano has voiced Gabriel on other occasions, such as in shitposts such as this and in livestreams that he makes cameos in such as TheTravGuy's stream of Ultrakill.
Furthermore, Gianni has voiced Gabriel in other Ultrakill related series such as Max0r's An Incorrect Summary of Ultrakill, voicing Gabriel in both episodes.
On August 16th, 2022, Gabriel "hijacked" the Twitch channel of his voice actor Gianni Matragano, banishing him to the Dean Winchester Angel Cheeseburger dimension to play the newest act of Ultrakill while he himself also played Ultrakill, as well as giving some statements of questionable canonicity:
Even an angel's might cannot circumvent a site's DMCA policies, which in itself has concerning implications.
Angels are powered by Monster Energy Zero Ultra.
Gabriel's catchphrase is apparently "It's Gabin' time!", referencing the ironic Morbius memes that were popular at the time.
Gabriel has apparently made out with another angel-themed character, Spamton G. Spamton.
In both of his boss fights, Gabriel is weak to the nails fired from nailguns, which could be a reference to how Jesus was nailed to the cross.
It's implied that the place where Gabriel ponders at the end of Act 2 is the Moon as in Dante's Divine Comedy (which Ultrakill takes heavy inspiration off), which is seen as the first layer of Heaven in the epic poem.
Furthermore, what seems like a ruined Earth can be seen in the sky.
Prior to release of Ultrakill's second act, Gabriel's twin great swords had the appearance of generic katanas. While this was eventually swapped out, one can still view the designs of his old swords at the ending screen of Act 1, when Gabriel is being punished by the Heavenly Council.
Despite being the main antagonist of Ultrakill's gameplay sections, Gabriel is in fact the main protagonist of the game's narrative in general, with his character arc being in line with the game's themes of embracing the end of things.
