~ Gabriel Miller's most famous quote. |

~ Gabriel taunting Bercouli for trying to defeat him. |
Gabriel Miller, also known as Subtilizer (in Gun Gale Online) and Emperor Vecta (in Project Alicization/Underworld), is a major antagonist in the Sword Art Online franchise. He is the Chief Technological Officer of "Glowgen Defense Systems" and son of the founder and former CTO. During the events of the Alicization Arc, he leads a 12-men team of operators, at the request of the National Security Agency, on an assault of the Ocean Turtle in order to obtain the Soul Translator technology. he is also second arch-nemesis of Kirito.
He was first mentioned in the Phantom Bullet Arc as the winner of the 1st Japanese Bullet of Bullets, using only a knife and a handgun, and the winner of the 4th Japanese BoB, without bringing any weapons of his own.
He was voiced by Akira Ishida (who also voiced Zeref Dragneel in Fairy Tail, Gaara in the Naruto franchise, Akaza in Demon Slayer, Regulus Corneas in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Hyoga in Dr. Stone, Ryuunosuke Uryuu in Fate/Zero, Fisheye in Sailor Moon, Hideo Shimada in Parasyte, and Mitsuru Kamekura in Kara no Kyoukai) in Japanese and Greg Chun (who also voiced Muzan Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Garou in One Punch Man, Henry Wu in Jurassic Park: Camp Cretaceous, Shin in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and N'Doul in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) in English. As a child, he was voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese and Amanda Miller in English.
Appearance[]
Gabriel Miller appears to be a tall and slim American man of possibly European descent. He has slicked back blonde hair with two exposed bangs and greenish-blue eyes. His outfit consists wears a white dress shirt, dark grey slacks and custom-made cordovan shoes. In combat, he wears military gear and armor.
Personality[]
Gabriel first appears to be a charismatic and intelligent man, but in reality. He is a bloodthirsty sadist that is devoid of anything remotely resembling empathy. He murdered his friend just to see what the nature of the soul was like, experimented on animals for that same reason also during his youth, and treats his followers either as tools or his own playthings for his own insatiable obsession. Gabriel constantly views everyone else as inferior to him whilst discarding them after being done using them for his own purposes. He also sees Integrity Knights as nothing but artificial intelligence, as he mocked an AI for sacrificing his own life for others , and then mocked Kirito, Asuna, Alice and Sinon for their supposed arrogance.
Due to "Incarnation" amplifying a person's beliefs and willpower to the point of becoming reality in Underworld, Gabriel's obsession with seeing souls manifested during his time in the Underworld. The experience made him insane, as his insatiable obsession granted him superhuman abilites, such as soul absorption, mind control, and even manifest itself into pure energy. As Emperor Vecta, due to it being a superaccount in the Underworld, he was also granted invulnerability, allowing him to survive through anything. His military background also made him capable in close-quarter combat and has reflexes and situational awareness higher than an average human being. All of this result in making him one of most evil antagonists in the franchise.
Biography[]
Past[]
Gabriel Miller was born in March 1998 at the Pacific Palisades district in the suburbs of Los Angeles. His father had a hobby of collecting insects. Gabriel would seclude himself in the room to observe the multi-colored insects with a magnifying glass.
During such observations, Gabriel began thinking about what powered those creatures. His father then showed him a video about mating praying mantises, where the female would devour the head of her partner during the mating. However, the insect would still continue to move despite no longer having a head. Since then he began thinking where was the soul of the insect housed in.
To find out, Gabriel conducted numerous experiments on insects by demolishing various parts of their bodies in secret. By the outcome of those cruel experiments, he concluded that the insect's soul was spread throughout its body. Gabriel desired to see or even capture this soul. However, no matter how much he experimented, he was never able to fulfill this goal.
Gabriel then began thinking about human souls. As humans could not live on without their heads, he concluded that their soul resided in the brain. He continued his thoughts about the human soul while analyzing his childhood friend, Alicia Klingerman.
Murder of Alicia Klingerman[]
Gabriel envisioned marrying Alicia one day to gain a glimpse at her soul. However, because of the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, Alicia's family fell from grace and earned a heavy debt. Alicia and her family were going to move to their kin in Kansas City. Before it happens, however, the 10-year-old Gabriel decided to kill her in case her soul lost its brilliance.
On the day Alicia bid her farewells at school, Gabriel invited her to the forest behind his home where his secret laboratory was hidden. There, when Gabriel and Alicia hugged, he took out a needle, which his father had used on his insects, to pierce through Alicia's left ear while holding her right ear, killing her.
As Alicia died, Gabriel seemingly saw a small glittering cloud passing out of her forehead and thought that what he was seeing was her soul. After that, he became more and more obsessed with human souls.
As Subtilizer[]
For the next couple of years, Gabriel showed great interest in the FullDive technology created in Japan in his pursuit of souls. He even began studying Japanese and fought against Japanese players in Gun Gale Online as Subtilizer.
Soon, Gabriel, now as a 28-years old, became a legendary figure amongst GGO players after winning the 1st Bullet of Bullets tournament with just a knife and a handgun. Later, his fame cemented after the 4th BoB tournament, which he won without bringing any weapons of his own, merely using the «Army Combative» skill to grapple to his opponent, steal the player's weapon and use it to kill his target. He was somehow able to predict the moves of his targets to ambush them at extremely close range. After that, he would kill them before they were even able to use their weapons against him.
During the 4th Bullet Of Bullets tournament in GGO, Sinon confronted Subtilizer as the only other remaining competitor. Sinon fought her best, but her skill was no match for Subtilizer's speed, and agility. The latter subdued the female sniper and strangled her to death. Gabriel held Sinon close and whispered in her ear "Your soul, will be so sweet." before depleting the last of her HP.
Sword Art Online: Alicization[]
Attack on Ocean Turtle[]
One day, Gabriel's company was approached by the National Security Agency and they were requested to participate in an operation to assault the Ocean Turtle to obtain the Soul Translator technology secretly developed there. Hearing about the technology to interface with the human soul and that it had already succeeded in duplicating a human's soul, Gabriel volunteered to lead the operation himself. The attack was initially a partial success, with Gabriel's team securing access to the main control room and two Soul Translators, and the Rath employees, led by Lieutenant Colonel of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Kikouka Sejirou, escaped and trapped within the secondary control room on the upper floors. Using the Soul Translators, he and his right-hand man, Vassago Cassals, enters Underworld while the rest of his team monitors the outside situation.
As Emperor Vecta[]
Entering Underworld as Emperor Vecta, the leader of the Dark Territory, he instigated the War of Underworld, and commandeered the Dark Territory and its army against the Human Empire Army. Lipia Zancale, subordinate of Dark Knight Commander Vixur Ul Shasta, attempts to assassinate him, as both desired peace between the Dark Territory and the Human Empire. However, she was killed. During the scuffle, Gabriel saw Lipia's soul in a manner similar to how Alicia died and "eats" it. Realizing the power he has and his newfound ability to see and eat souls, amplified by his Incarnation unbeknownst to him, his obsession of human souls went to the extreme. Shasta was later killed as well after attempting his own assassination attempt. Soon after, Gabriel began his attack on the Human Empire Army as "The Final Load Test" of the Underworld begins.
Gabriel spends much of War of Underworld on the sidelines, ordering Vassago and his Dark Territory subordinates on various attacks throughout the war. At one point, he ordered to sacrifice the Orcs to be used as energy for the attacks done by the Dark Mages Guild. One such victim was the Orc Leader Lilpirin's wife, Lenju, leaving him distraught over the lengths Gabriel would do. During an surprise attack which pits a small group of the Human Empire Army led by Integrity Knight Bercouli, the Pugilists Guild; one of the factions of the Dark Territory Army, and Underworld visitors sent by Gabriel's team under the guise of a hacked beta of a new VRMMORPG who started killing both Human Empire soldiers and Pugilists Guild members, Gabriel took the opportunity from the confusion and kidnaps Alice via a dragon, as he heads off to the World End Altar to exit Underworld and claim Alice for himself. Seeing the betrayal of his supposed leader, Iskahn, the leader of the Pugilists Guild, proposed a alliance with the Human Empire Army and joins them in chasing after Gabriel, with Bercouli following Gabriel also via dragon. Lilpirin would later defected on his own as well, helping Kirito's sister Leafa in fending off against Underworld visitors sent by Gabriel's team.
As Subtilizer, The Angel of Death.[]
Fighting off Gabriel on death's door, Bercouli and his dragon chased down Gabriel and spend his last moments protecting the unconscious Alice. Bercouli manages to kill Gabriel, but later succumbs to his injuries. Alice, after being encouraged by Sinon, mounted on her dragon and heads off to the World End Altar to be extracted by Kikouka. Gabriel, having re-entered the Underworld via his GGO Account as Subtilizer, faces off against Sinon, who's holding fort for Alice to escape. She nearly had her soul "eaten" after Gabriel having his powers amplified through Incarnation, attempts to mind-control her, but later fights off and engages in a shootout. She lost both of her legs in the process, but manages to shot off Gabriel's arm, which later regenerates as pure energy. Gabriel, now disinterested with Sinon's soul, leaves to continue his pursue for Alice, and left her for dead.
Gabriel later catches up with Alice and fatally injures both dragons that Alice is using, but Kirito, reawakened from his catatonic state, appears and reverts them back to baby dragon eggs, saving their lives. Kirito later fends off Gabriel alone while Asuna escorts Alice to the World End's Altar. As the fight goes on, Gabriel's powers continues to amplify, turning him into a being of dark energy resembling an fallen angel. Gabriel attempts to kill Kirito by absorbing his heart, but with the help of his friend Eugeo in spirit, Kirito manages to fend off and survives by the skin of his teeth. With the help of prayers of every living being present on Underworld, Kirito, having his powers amplified through Incarnation, alongside Eugeo's soul, residing in the latter's sword, together attacks Gabriel and manages to kill him by overloading him with energy, ending his threat to the Underworld once and for all.
Gabriel returns to the real world, laughing maniacally, but later founds out that he actually died in the Soul Translator. Alicia later appears, saying that "she always be together with him from now on". Gabriel screams in terror as Alicia and a couple pair of hands refuses to let him go as they sink to the depths of Hell. It is unknown however, whether this is actually happening in the real world, or part of Gabriel's imagination as he died.

Trivia[]
- In the web novel version, it was revealed that "Subtilizer" is an English word, borrowed from French, which in turn was borrowed from Latin, where it means "one who hides things below". Reki interpreted this as "one who steals things away", similar to the French meaning of "Subtiliser", "to steal".
- In the web novel version, Gabriel was presented as the final antagonist of the Sword Art Online series, due to Alicization Arc being touted as the final arc in the original web novel version. This is no longer the case as Unital Ring Arc, which is currently being written for the light novels, was reportedly set to be the new final arc of the series.
- In addition, in the web version, the final battle against Gabriel as well as the epilogue happened after the original Moon Cradle Arc was over.
- Gabriel being introduced to the nature of the soul by his father showing him a video of a male praying mantis still moving despite being decapitated by his mate post-coital when he was a child, leading to him murdering Alicia and experimenting on animals and then humans in the name of studying the nature of the soul, making him very similar to the real-life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who became fascinated with death and mortality after his father taught him how to dissect dead animals when he was young, which eventually blossomed into him multilating his victims' bodies and keeping their body parts in refrigerators, as well as engaging in acts of cannibalism on his victims.
- The password for Gabriel's Subtilizer account is Yastgutdwiiys, which according to the series creator Reki Kawahara is an acronym for "You aren't supposed to give up the demon who is in your soul".
- In the anime, Gabriel was mentioned indirectly in the second season, when Sinon and Kirito discuss how to end their stalemate after killing Death Gun. He made his proper anime debut as a cameo in Alicization's first episode.
