Sovereign Prince Gaius Amidonia VIII is a major antagonist in the light novel, manga, and anime series, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. He is the main antagonist of the first two volumes in the light novel and in the first season of the anime adaptation.
He is an arrogant and prideful man who was the last Sovereign Prince of the Principality of Amidonia and the father of Julius Amidonia and Roroa Amidonia. He leads the invasion of Elfriden Kingdom in retaliation for his nation lost half of its territory.
He was voiced by Tetsu Inada in the Japanese version of the anime and by Brandon Potter in English.
Biography[]
Gaius was the last Sovereign Prince of the Principality of Amidonia. After the death of the previous king, Gaius became the next king and ruled Amidonia with an iron fist and made sure the citizens to always blame Elfrieden for their hardships and instead of trying to improve the nation's economy.
During the time of Kazuya becoming the new ruler of the Elfrieden Kingdom, Gaius offers assistance to the kingdom and the Three Dukes after seeing Kazuya as a young ruler with no experience and the perfect opportunity to gain his long lost land in the war with the Elfrienden Kingdom.
During the beginning of the One Week War, Gaius saw chance to invade Elfrieden and retake the nation's territory. Finance Minister Gatsby Colbert tried to warn Gaius about violating the First Clause of the Mankind Declaration Treaty and forcing the Gran Chaos Empire to intervene, the latter ignored him and attacked Altomura with thirty-thousand troops on his side.
But Gaius' plans were anticipated by Kazuya Souma and Prime Minister Hakuya Kwonmin. Soon after Castor Vargas and Georg Carmine were defeated, Kazuya announces he will invade Amidonia, giving Gaius no choice but to abandon the siege and retreat to save Van.
The Amidonia Army faced major casualties due to muddy terrain, lack of supplies and harassed by the Elfrieden Kingdom Marine Corps and sacrificed by Gaius and recruited peasants to build his army back to 25,000.
Once Gaius and his forces reached the city of Van, they met Elfrieden forces of 50,000. During the battle, Gaius led 500 of his soldiers into a suicidal charge to kill Kazuya and uses a decoy to distract both Ludwin and the Royal Guards. Gaius manages to reach the encampment and faced Carla Vargas and Kazuya's Little Musashibo dolls. After the fight, Gaius is heavily wounded and kept on going. But the Elfrieden archers found and shot a volley of arrows at Gaius.
Before being killed by Kazuya, Gaius instructed his son Julius escape the battle and blame the failed Elfrieden invasion onto Gaius so the Gran Chaos Empire would not see this as Julius' plan. Gaius also designated him as the new ruler of Amidonia and tells him and carry on the hatred against Elfrieden. However, Gaius' wishes wolud never come true after Julius was exlie and Amidonia was taken over and his daughter Roroa became Kazuya's Third Primary Queen, thereby legitimizing his claim to Amidonia. After the events, Kazuya held a memorial festival to honor Gaius.
