All great achievements require sacrifice. The rest of the galaxy may not understand, but they will have to comply.
~ Galactic Nemesis ascension perk description.

The Galactic Nemesis are some of the main protagonists of the 4X strategy game Stellaris.

Unlike other Crisis events, the Galactic Nemesis starts out as a normal player or AI-controlled empire, though one that cannot be xenophilic or pacifistic. Once the fourth ascension perk (earned by completing tradition trees that dictate an empire's path) is unlocked, any empire has the option of taking the Galactic Nemesis perk and beginning their journey to ascend into godhood by any means necessary.

They serve as one of the three playable Crisis Aspirant paths (alongside Cosmogenesis and Behemoth Fury) and were introduced with the Nemesis DLC.

History[]

Up until the Galactic Nemesis ascension perk is taken, the empire behaves the same as any other. Afterward, they begin their descent into madness with a notification that started as a voice, supposedly from the supernatural realm known as the Shroud, had been whispering words of power and control into the minds of the population. Throughout history there have been many prophecies of a crisis that would threaten all life in the galaxy, but only now has it become apparent that becoming it was their destiny all along.

With a new goal in their sights, the Galactic Nemesis will need to earn "Menace" to progress five stages before they become an existential threat. Menace is gained by destroying other empires and starbases, being in violation of galactic law, or even wiping out entire species and generally being as destructive and antagonistic as possible. With each stage, the Galactic Nemesis will gain new benefits and Menacing ship types to ensure their dominance over the galaxy and to defend themselves when the galaxy inevitably tries to stop them.

Stellaris GalacticNemesisFinalstage

The final stage of the Galactic Nemesis is reached. The empire is now the Crisis.

Once the fifth and final crisis stage has been reached, the rest of the galaxy will realize the true danger that the Galactic Nemesis poses and will immediately declare all-out war towards the offending empire, who at this point will be swarming space with fleets of easily replaceable Menacing-class ships. The Galactic Nemesis' final goal is now within reach: the construction of the Aetherophasic Engine, a megastructure around the star of their home system that will merge the Shroud and the physical plane into one, allowing the empire to conquer it and take their rightful place as rulers of reality.

In order to do this, the crisis empire would need an exorbitant amount of dark matter to construct it, far more than what one could harvest or buy normally. To this end, the Galactic Nemesis creates the Star-Eaters; immensely powerful cuboid ships made entirely out of dark matter that have the ability to destroy entire systems by turning their stars into black holes. While all of the other empires try to stop the Galactic Nemesis, said empire must defend their Star-Eaters so they can harvest stars for their dark matter.

As the Aetherophasic Engine gains in power and nears the end of its construction, the Shroud itself will start to unravel, and the entities living within it start to panic, manifesting into and rampaging through the galaxy as psionic avatars in a frightened frenzy. If the Engine is completed, its immediate activation will destroy the entire galaxy, wiping out all life as every star is turned into a black hole while the Galactic Nemesis ascends victorious. Should their capital be conquered before then, however, the Aetherophasic Engine will be destroyed and they will have to start all over again if they manage to retake the system.
