Galvatron, formerly known as Megatron, is a major antagonist in the Transformers franchise.
He is usually classified as a more powerfully upgraded form of Megatron, created by Unicron himself, with a significantly different personality.
At first, he was made to serve Unicron and destroy the Matrix of Leadership, but he rebelled against his master. He regained leadership over the Decepticons and continues to battle the Autobots. In the Transformers Marvel UK comics, Galvatron is depicted as a time traveller from 20 years in the future. He is the archenemy of both Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus.
In various post Generation 1 stories, such as Robots in Disguise (2001), the Unicron Trilogy, and the 2014 film Transformers: Age of Extinction, the name Galvatron is given to an upgraded Megatron, albeit with no change in personality or portrayal. In some versions, Galvatron was a separate entity from Megatron such as in the IDW comics and Aligned Continuity.
In the 1986 film, he was voiced by the late Leonard Nimoy, who also played the Mirror Spock in Star Trek and Sentinel Prime in Dark of the Moon. In the cartoon, he was voiced by Frank Welker, who also played his original form Megatron.
Biography[]
Cartoon[]

The dying Megatron was transformed into Galvatron by Unicron, and proved to be a great threat to the Autobots. However, after his defeat by Rodimus Prime, Galvatron became an unpredictable madman who was just as dangerous to his Decepticons as the Autobots. In the Japanese version of the cartoon, Galvatron serves as a major antagonist of the sequel series The Headmasters, before he was eventually killed by the Autobot Headmasters.
Comics[]
Including both the US and UK Marvel comics, there were at least two different time travelling Galvatrons, the first coming from the future of The Movie, which due to time travel became an alternate future. Aside from the adaptation of the Movie, the original Galvatron exclusively appeared in the Marvel UK comics.
The Movie[]
In The Planet Eater, Megatron, critically wounded after his last battle with Optimus Prime, was cast out of Astrotrain on the journey back to Cybertron in 2006. He was found by Unicron and recreated as Galvatron, along with Cyclonus and Scourge. In Judgement Day, Galvatron killed Starscream and reclaimed leadership of the Decepticons. After witnessing Unicron consume one of Cybertron's moons, Galvatron reprimanded Unicron for eating one of his moons, to which Unicron psychically tortured him, and he was ordered to attack Autobot City on Earth. Galvatron and his minions attacked Ultra Magnus's Autobots as they attempted to make their way off-planet. They were waylaid when the Autobot commander triggered a domino effect within an asteroid field to jam the Decepticons' sensors, a trick Galvatron remembered being used against him when he was Megatron. Galvatron caught up to his prey, and began blasting the Autobots' ships. Ultra Magnus tricked Galvatron into believing he had succeeded in destroying his vessel.
In The Final Battle, Galvatron learned that the Autobots had survived, and followed them to Junkion, where he managed to retrieve the Matrix. Galvatron then tried to use it's power against Unicron, but found he was unable to open the talisman. Unicron consumed Galvatron for his treachery, and, within the chaos-bringer's body, Galvatron confronted Hot Rod. During their fight, Hot Rod reclaimed the Matrix and was transformed into Rodimus Prime, then used his new strength to hurl Galvatron through Unicron's hide and into the void of space.
Target: 2006[]
At some point during the Movie, Galvatron decided to free himself from Unicron's shackles, by timejumping back twenty years. Galvatron intended to create a device that would be powerful enough to destroy Unicron in 2006. Galvatron brought Cyclonus and Scourge with him, and as an effect of time-travel, displaced the Autobots Prowl, Ratchet, and Optimus. Seeking to ally with his past self, Galvatron travelled to the Decepticon base, and explained himself to Megatron, without mentioning he was his future self. Megatron did not believe him, but failed to best him. Galvatron deposed his past self as Decepticon leader and put the Constructicons to work building a massive laser cannon which he would then hide on Earth and unleash on Unicron when the time was right. However, after hearing that the 1986-era Ultra Magnus would be arriving, Galvatron had to alter his plan.
Capturing the spying Jazz, Galvatron lured the Autobots into a battle which he used to prove his superiority. The Autobots and Megatron briefly formed an alliance to stop the three future Decepticons, and Hot Rod, Blurr and Kup came from the future to help. Present-day Ultra Magnus kept Galvatron occupied as the future Autobots set-up a trap. Galvatron duelled and defeated Ultra Magnus, returning to his laser cannon only for it to be destroyed in a huge explosion. Galvatron emerged from the wreckage to see what he thought was Starscream (but was an unconscious Skywarp in disguise), and in a fit of anger, blew him up. After a second he realised that if he destroyed Starscream in the past, then he couldn't destroy him in the future. Figuring that he was in an alternate past, and he could not affect his future, Galvatron and his troops returned to their proper time.
Fallen Angel[]
At the moment of his defeat, however, Galvatron used the time jump device to return to the 20th century, on a more permanent basis. Arriving in 1987, Galvatron crashlanded into Earth like a meteor, damaging his mental state. This caused Galvatron to believe the Cybertron Seven, a group of Autobots who had noticed his arrival, were Rodimus Prime, and easily bested them. After this, Galvatron them faced the Dinobots. However, a group of Shockwave-led Decepticons discovered him, and Shockwave, having discovered how dangerous Galvatron is from Soundwave, ordered them to aid the Autobots. The combined efforts of the Decepticons and the Dinobots, with the remote help of Professor Morris, managed to be a match for him. Galvatron retreated, not wishing to harm the Decepticons, who he wished to command.
Mount Verona[]
Still somewhat insane, in Burning Sky, Galvatron constructed a a Power siphon that would enable him to absorb the energy of the Mount Verona volcano, making him as powerful as a god. As the siphon began its work, Ultra Magnus crossed paths with Galvatron once more. Though Magnus managed to momentarily beat down Galvatron, he defeated Magnus once again. Galvatron dragged him to his power siphon, and gloated about his scheme.
In Hunters, Galvatron prepared to throw Ultra Magnus into the volcano, when he was attacked by Rodimus Prime, Kup, and Blurr, who had travelled back from Galvatron's era to disrupt his plans. Galvatron knocked out Kup and Blurr, but as he readied to square off against Rodimus, Death's Head, who had also travelled from the future, joined the fray. Rodimus and the bounty hunter bickered over who would be taking down Galvatron, a debate the latter had no patience for. After forcing Death's Head to retreat, Galvatron and Rodimus duelled, and Ultra Magnus helped damage Galvatron's power siphon, allowing the Autobots to escape.
After Galvatron finished repairs, in Fire on High, Goldbug and Wreck Gar, along with Kup and Blurr, attacked him. Easily thwarting the 21st century Autobots, Galvatron was distracted by Ultra Magnus, while Wreck-Gar and Rodimus snatched up the time jump device and began modifying it to send them all back to the future. After throwing Magnus into the volcano, Galvatron realised the Autobots plan and fought Rodimus. He was electrocuted when Rodimus blasted a nearby power cable. However Galvatron recovered, and savagely beat his old enemy. Death's Head, wishing to be paid by Rodimus, fought Galvatron, unwittingly giving the Autobots the time they needed. The device was triggered, and all the 21st century Transformers were returned to the future, aside from Galvatron, having modified it to stay behind.
In Vicious Circle, Goldbug was left to face Galvatron, as Ultra Magnus, having escaped the Volcano, believed he could not defeat him. Goldbug was quickly overpowered but before Galvatron could deliver the killing blow, the reenergised Ultra Magnus arrived. During the course of the battle, the maddened Galvatron ripped a piece of the siphon’s control equipment loose. This resulted in the siphon losing control of the volcano’s eruption. Galvatron, too crazed to notice the danger, was entombed along with Ultra Magnus within the crater.
Rivalry with Shockwave[]
In Ladies' Night, Galvatron was discovered encased in lava inside the volcano alongside Ultra Magnus. On learning this, Shockwave sent Soundwave and the Combaticons to destroy the volcano, continuing to see Galvatron as a threat. They were stopped by the Throttlebots, and an explosion during the encounter led to Galvatron breaking free.
In Enemy Action, Galvatron headed for the new undersea base that Shockwave had set up. Seeing him approach, Shockwave sent the Seacons to attack him but Galvatron easily defeated them. Shockwave assembled a group inside the base to fight Galvatron, but Galvatron told them that he had not been attacking but approaching them as an ally: However, now Shockwave had attacked him, he saw them as an enemy. This, in fact, had been Galvatron's plan, to turn Shockwave's troops against him. As he left, he encountered both the Firecons, sent by the Decepticons on Cybertron to propose an alliance, and the Sparkabots, sent to keep an eye on him, but dismissed both as below his interest.
The result of Galvatron's manipulation was that, in Salvage, Shockwave retrieved Megatron to use as a weapon against him. Galvatron discovered the Sparkabots and the now-also-revived Ultra Magnus attempting to intervene and confronted them. After he had done serious damage to the Sparkabots, Ultra Magnus was galvanised into action and gave Galvatron a beating. Galvatron sloped away, humiliated but having delayed them long enough for Megatron to be brought back online.
In Wrecking Havoc, Galvatron was reunited with Cyclonus and Scourge, who had also been transported back in time. However, they had no interest in serving him again, instead believing he had the trigger device and wanting to use it to return to their own time. Their confrontation was broken up by the arrival of the Autobot Wreckers, who were horrified to realise they had arrived in the middle of a human city. As the battle threatened human lives, Springer prioritised luring Cyclonus and Scourge away. The other Wreckers went to assist him, allowing Galvatron to escape.
Time Wars[]
Galvatron finally encountered Megatron in Altered Images and found he had been brainwashed by Shockwave into fighting him. As the two fought, Galvatron told Megatron of how he had finally destroyed Starscream. The news amused Megatron, causing his old personality to reassert itself, and the pair teamed up.
By Time Wars, they had been joined by Scourge and also recruited Ravage. The Wreckers teamed up with the Decepticon Mayhem Squad to launch an assault on their base but were no match for both Galvatron and Megatron, who proceeded to massacre their opponents. However, events were more serious than Galvatron realised: The continued presence of himself, Scourge and the now dead Cyclonus in the past had disrupted the fabric of time and created a time rift. Rodimus Prime arrived on the scene with a combined army of Autobots and Decepticons from both time periods to try and take him down. Galvatron became more insane and enraged by the moment, managing to take down such heavyweights as Fortress Maximus, Grimlock and Scorponok until only Kup, Blurr and Arcee were left backing Rodimus Prime up. Optimus Prime, observing events from limbo, managed to cross back to the real world and fought Galvatron, who seemed to be gaining the upper hand. However, the delay caused the time rift to grow even larger and swallow Galvatron whole, tearing him apart. The sacrifice of Scourge and Cyclonus as well was enough to seal it.
Aspects of Evil[]
However, these events caused the timeline to reset. As revealed in Aspects of Evil, on returning to the future Rodimus Prime and the others found a new timeline where Galvatron had never travelled back in time and had remained in command of the Decepticons. He led an assault on an Autobot outpost and massacred the occupants, including Blurr, in order to provoke Rodimus Prime into attacking him. He hoped that by causing Rodimus to give into his dark impulses, he would release Unicron, imprisoned inside the Creation Matrix. Rodimus managed to come to his senses in time and break off the attack.
The fate of this Galvatron is unknown, but as revealed in The Void he managed to force the surviving Autobots off Cybertron. As seen in Aspects of Evil, he did eventually succeed in bringing about Unicron's release although the Chaos Bringer was ultimately contained again.
Galvatron II[]

Backstory[]
According to the Ask Vector Prime Facebook page, this version of Galvatron was created from a Megatron by Unicron, along with his own Cyclonus and Scourge. They helped destroy their home reality and several more, before Cyclonus was decapitated by a Megatron attempting to defend his home universe. The Bludgeon of this reality joined the Heralds, and they were eventually joined by Dirge and Thunderwing.
Worlds Collide[]
Galvatron and his four fellow heralds travelled into the Dreamwave Armada universe to prepare the way for Unicron. While the others defeated the Decepticon forces on Cybertron and took control of the space bridge Nexus, Galvatron was headed to Earth to track down Over-Run, a Mini-Con refugee from a Cybertron that Unicron had consumed, as Over-Run carried the Mini-Con Matrix, which contained the essence of the Mini-Cons from his reality, so was a possible threat. When Galvatron arrived in San Francisco, he was distracted by several Transformers, including Starscream, Hot Shot, and Thrust, but easily defeated them. However, they managed to distract him long enough for Over-Run to escape.
When the Megatron of this reality launched his attack on the Autobots on Earth, Galvatron arrived to destroy him, declaring that he had killed "many" Megatrons in other realities. Despite his putting up a struggle, Megatron was pummelled within an inch of his life, but before Galvatron could finish him off, the Air Defense Mini-Con Team intervened, forming the Star Saber. This allowed Megatron to overwhelm and eventually destroy Galvatron, hacking his corpse to pieces.

Trivia[]
- Galvatron was voiced by the late Leonard Nimoy in the Transformers: The Movie, and by Frank Welker in the third season of the animated series Transformers: Generation 1. Apparently, despite the movie being set before the show's third season, the later began production before the motion picture was finished. By the time Nimoy was cast, Welker already recorded the voice of Galvatron for the first episode arc Five Faces of Darkness. This explain why Galvatron's voice and personality are completely different from the movie. Later, the author added an out-of-universe explanation saying that Galvatron suffered from brain damage after his defeat at the end of the first movie.
- Frank Welker also provided the voice of Galvatron in Transformers: Age of Extinction albeit with a much different voice akin to his portrayal of Megatron in the Transformers Prime animated series.
- While Target 2006 doesn't specify at when precisely during The Transformers: The Movie Galvatron, Cyclonus, and Scourge travel back in time. However, it's mentioned Unicron has tortured Galvatron at least once, and Hot Rod, Kup and Blurr are still on Earth when they go back in time. Many, including the TFWiki, place it before Galvatron's attack on Autobot City.
- Given that Galvatron treats the Straxus-created Megatron clone as his future self, and remembers events from his perspective, it is possible that he was created from the clone of Megatron, rather than the original Megatron.
- Given that the clone was created due to the events of the Return to Cybertron arc, when Straxus made his first attempt to possess Megatron, which only happened due to the events of Target 2006, it is very possible that during the events of the Movie, Galvatron was created from the one and only Megatron. Due to the consequences of his trip through time, Galvatron unknowingly rewrites his own history so that the Megatron clone took the place of the original, and became Galvatron.
- In Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001) and throughout the Unicron Trilogy, "Galvatron" is voiced by the same actors who voiced Megatron, Daniel Riordan and David Kaye respectfully. This is because the Galvatron in both these series is Megatron having taken on a different name.
- This was so that Hasbro could not lose the trademark on the Galvatron name.
- The G1 Galvatron who appeared as a Herald of Unicron in Dreamwave's Armada comics, was included due to being a favourite of Simon Furman's, who wrote both the Armada comic, and Galvatron's appearances in the Marvel comics.
- Despite the comic being set in a version of the Unicron Trilogy, the concept for the Heralds is that they were from numerous different G1 universes that were consumed by Unicron, and were recruited by him.
- Megatron in the second live action Transformers film was originally going to be named Galvatron after his resurrection. He kept his original name, however, to avoid any confusion.
- However, he was eventually named Galvatron in the fourth movie, as he eventually gained a powerful new body thanks to the humans who used his spark to make an artificial transformer that they called Galvatron, effectively reviving/evolving him in process much like Unicron did to Megatron in other versions.
- Unused concept art of Galvatron in Dark of the Moon was created by Massive Black artist Bruno 'Nox' Gore. It is unknown if he was intended to be an upgrade of Megatron, or a separate character.
- Most incarnations of Galvatron are either silvery white and purple with some exceptions. His design may be a reference to Megatron's original design or Galvatron's original color scheme in the first toyline release (see first picture above).
- In the original G1 Transformers cartoon, however, Galvatron was intended to be depicted as silvery white and purple instead of being purple but was altered to match the same color scheme as his henchmen Cyclonus and Scourge, particularly to show he was a reformatted servant of Unicron. This colour scheme of his is still used in some of the comic adaptations, as well as his later incarnations. It is also possible his color altering in the G1 cartoon may have to do something with Megatron's original ability to transform into a pistol gun.
- In the video games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, one of R.O.B.'s alternate costumes is based on Armada Galvatron's color scheme.
