The Gambling King (博奕王キング Bakuchiō Kingu) is a minor antagonist in Ranma ½, he is a professional gambler that, because of a deal he made with Ranma when he was a child, takes the Tendo Dojo and turns it into a casino to scam people and make as many money as possible.

He was voiced by Takeshi Aono in Japanese and David Kaye in English.

Biography[]

Exactly 3653 days before the events of the series, the King, a skilled gambler, arrived in the area where Ranma and Ukyo lived. He began swindling children out of their money through games of Old Maid. Ukyo challenged him but lost repeatedly, eventually wagering and losing her family’s okonomiyaki cart. Ranma also tried but lost everything, even gambling away the deed to the Tendo Dojo. After discovering the King was cheating by stacking the deck, Ranma and Ukyo tied him up and threw him into a river. Years later, the King returned to collect his debts, using the deed to claim the Tendo Dojo and turning it into a casino. Despite multiple attempts by the Tendo family and Ranma to win back the dojo, the King continued to cheat his way to victory. Eventually, Ranma, after rigorous training, outsmarted the King by hiding cards under his bandages and won back the dojo.

The Gambling King later appeared at a Christmas party, where he was thrown out after winning a poker game with suspected cheating.

He also made a brief cameo during the events of Big Trouble in Nekonron, China.

Abilities[]

The King's primary skill lies in gambling, where he excels at cheating and manipulating games to his advantage. His two main weaknesses, as noted by Nabiki, are his predictable reactions to certain cards and his tendency to favor slightly raised cards. While not a skilled fighter, he has shown some combat abilities in Ranma ½: Hard Battle, including:

  • Ten Bow King: Fires a slow-moving card arrow from a bow made of cards.
  • JOKER Storm: Throws three Joker cards at his opponent while jumping backward.

Despite these techniques, his physical strength is minimal, as even child Ranma and Ukyo were able to overpower him. His true power lies in his cunning and mastery of deception.
