Ganondorf, better known as Ganon in his demonic form, is the main antagonist of Akira Himekawa's 2005 manga adaption of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
He was once a bandit who stumbled onto the portal to the Sacred Realm, which held the Triforce. After slaughtering his fellow bandits, Ganondorf claimed the Triforce and wished for ultimate power, becoming the monstrous Ganon and corrupting the Sacred Realm into the Dark World.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Ganondorf was once a powerful member of a gang of bandits in search of the Triforce. After stumbling onto a door to the Sacred Realm and discovering the Triforce, Ganondorf slaughtered all of his allies to claim the artifact for his own. Laying his bloodstained hands on the Triforce, Ganondorf wished for ultimate power. As he laughed maniacally, the Triforce granted his wish and transformed Ganondorf into the demon known as Ganon.
Ganon used his dark powers to corrupt the Sacred Realm, transforming it into a twisted reflection of Hyrule known as the Dark World. Ganon then used the Triforce to lure adventurers and thieves into the Dark World, causing them to be transformed into hideous monsters that reflected their own greed, further feeding into Ganon’s ever-growing power. Fearing the Ganon’s malice, the Seven Sages sealed off the door to the Sacred Realm, trapping Ganon in the Dark World for the next 100 years.
However, after those 100 years passed and the story of the “Imprisoning War” faded into legend, Ganon reached out across the barrier between Hyrule and the Dark World. He contacted Agahnim, a curious scholar who was researching the Triforce. Ganon offered Agahnim ultimate power and knowledge, in exchange for the latter’s loyalty. When Agahnim’s partner, one of the Knights of Hyrule, tried to put a stop to their plan, Agahnim banished him and his wife to the Dark World. Despite resisting its corrupting effects, the couple eventually met their end, with them likely being killed by Ganon himself.
A Link to the Past[]
Acting on Ganon’s behalf, Agahnim starts a series of natural disasters that plague Hyrule, only to then stop said disasters and make himself look like a hero. Impressed with his magical skill and heroism, the King of Hyrule recruits Agahnim as his right-hand sorcerer.
Agahnim begins casting spells to usurp the king. Learning of his treachery, the royals attempt to oust him from the castle. Agahnim then kills the king, takes over Hyrule Castle, and banishes six of the descendants of the Seven Sages to the Dark World, fueling Ganon’s power. Agahnim then captures Zelda, the final descendant, to use her as the seventh sacrifice.
However, Link’s uncle breaks into Hyrule Castle in a desperate bid to save the princess. In responses, Agahnim personally murders him. Link find his uncle and takes up his sword, freeing Zelda and escaping for a short time, before Agahnim eventually recaptures her and sacrifices her to the Dark World. Using the power of the Sages, Ganon begins his ultimate plan of merging Hyrule with the Dark World.
After Agahnim’s powers weaken during a battle with Link, the terrified sorcerer retreats to Ganon’s Tower. Agahnim begs his master for more power, only for Ganon to mock him, revealing that he views Agahnim as nothing more than a pitiful, mortal pawn, and that he never intended on sharing the Triforce with him. Ganon then murders Agahnim and activates the Pyramid of Power, causing the Light and Dark Worlds to begin merging so Ganon can subjugate the power of both. Ganon engages in a final battle with Link, Zelda, and Ghanti, only to be defeated with the Master Sword and Silver Arrows.
Link uses the Triforce to wish for peace in Hyrule, setting the people of the Dark World free and ending Ganon’s reign of terror.
