Ahah... Link! I have been waiting for you! Heh heh heh... I was hoping I could make Zelda vanish before your eyes. Behold! The last moment of Princess Zelda!
~ Ganon, as Agahnim, banishing Princess Zelda to the Dark World.
I never imagined a boy like you could give me so much trouble. It’s unbelievable that you defeated my alterego, Agahnim the Dark Wizard, twice! But I will never give you the Triforce. I will destroy you and make my wish to conquer both Light and Dark Worlds come true without delay!
~ Ganon before his final battle with Link.

Ganondorf Dragmire, better known as Ganon or as his alter-ego Agahnim, is the main antagonist of the Downfall Timeline within The Legend of Zelda franchise.

He is a version of Ganondorf who successfully killed Link in the final battle in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Ganondorf then transformed into Ganon, the King of Darkness. While in the Sacred Realm, Ganon causes the Imprisoning War, a brutal battle that deeply effected Hyrule. Then, over the course of history, Ganon corrupted and distorted the Sacred Realm into the Dark World, a dark and twisted version of Hyrule. In the Dark World, Ganon created an alter-ego of himself, Agahnim, who was sent to Hyrule, leading to the events of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

After killing Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf takes the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom, giving him full control of the Triforce. The Sages, in one last effort, seal the all-powerful Ganon away into the corrupted Sacred Realm, temporarily ending Ganon's reign of terror.

The Imprisoning War[]

After a brief moment of peace in the land of Hyrule, the door to the Sacred Realm re-opened. This started a huge fight, with people fighting each other to claim the Triforce. However, none of them succeeded. Instead, Ganon's demon army came to attack Hyrule. The Sages were then ordered by the King of Hyrule to seal the gate to the realm once again to stop Ganon's army. The Sages succeeded in their task, but unfortunately the Knights of Hyrule were almost wiped out as a result of the war. Due to the lives lost and the cost of resources, the Imprisoning War resulted in Hyrule being in a state of poverty.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past[]

One day flood of horrible tragedies besieged the kingdom of Hyrule, the King of Hyrule offered a reward to anyone who could help. With an unidentified magic, a mysterious stranger named Agahnim arrived and ended these problems. This resulted him being hailed as a hero and bestowed with the esteemed titles of heir to the Seven Sages and chief advisor to the King. With this position, Agahnim used his power for evil. He proceeded to brainwash all of Hyrule's soldiers, kill the King of Hyrule, and kidnap six of the Maidens and send them to the Dark World. A reincarnation of Link invades Hyrule Castle and frees Princess Zelda. Zelda hides inside the Sanctuary until she is found by Agahnim's troops. She is then sent to the top of Hyrule Castle.

When Link gets to the top of the castle, Agahnim banishes Zelda to the Dark World, breaking the seal made by the Seven Sages. He then tells Link that nothing will be able to stop him, as they are in control of the Triforce, and the darkness will eventually consume Hyrule. Agahnim then vanishes, but he is then found by Link behind a secret curtain. The two then engage in a duel, where Link uses Agahnim's own magic against him. Before Link can defeat Agahnim, the latter banishes the former to the Dark World. Link is then left to explore the Dark World, in search for Zelda and the Maidens. During this search, Link finds out that Agahnim is either a servant or pawn of Ganon.

Link then fights Agahnim a second time at the top of Ganon's Tower. Agahnim suddenly collapses, and a faint image of Ganon appears. Ganon then flees to the Pyramid of Power. Link then goes inside the pyramid and engages in the final fight with Ganon, who reveals that Agahnim was his alter-ego this whole time. Ganon is then defeated and peace is restored to Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[]

DethlGanon

Dethl's copy of Ganon.

Due to his death, Ganon doesn't directly appear, but Shadow Nightmares during the DethI fight turn into Agahnim and Ganon, representing Link's worst fears. These copies of Ganon and his alter-ego have identical attacks to their counterparts in A Link to the Past.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages[]

Ganon, now a mindless beast.

Gwoh hoh hoh! I am Ganon... The Evil King...
~ Ganon after seemingly having regained his mind before his death in the Oracle games.

After Ganon's death, Twinrova devised a plan to revive him, as revealed in the linked ending. This revival was to perform a ritual called the Dark Rites. Three flames—the Flame of Destruction, the Flame of Sorrow, and the Flame of Despair—had to be ignited as part of the ritual. The Flame of Sorrow is ignited when Veran used the abilities of Nayru the oracle to bring terrible tragedy to the inhabitants of Labrynna, while the Flame of Destruction is lighted when General Onox throws the seasons of Holodrum into disorder. After the Twinrova sisters capture Princess Zelda, two flames are lighted, and the people's desperation ignites the third flame, known as the Flame of Despair. Link killed them before the ritual was complete, so the Twinrova sisters had to sacrifice themselves in order to awaken Ganon since they couldn't sacrifice Zelda anymore. Ganon became a mindless beast as a result of the incomplete ritual, however he did exhibit some limited awareness right before Link defeated him. Ganon is completely vulnerable to normal sword attacks due to not being fully revived unlike his last appearance.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds[]

YugaMerge

Yuga transforming with Ganon.

Around a century after the events of the Oracle games, many portals open between Hyrule and a universe parallel to it named Lorule. Yuga, seemingly Ganondorf's Lorulean counterpart, emerges from the portals. Yuga uses his power to resurrect Ganon from the darkness. Yuga successfully resurrects Ganon, and then fuses with him, turning into a monstrous being known as Yuga Ganon, with Yuga in complete control of Ganon's body. Before Yuga Ganon can kill Link, he is stopped by the leader of Lorule, Princess Hilda. Princess Hilda then tasks Link to reawaken the Sages and gain the Triforce of Courage.

When Link obtains the Triforce of Courage, Impa warns him of Ganon's return. She tells him to go to Lorule castle and stop Ganon once and for all.

Yuga Ganon

When Link returns to the castle, he discovers that Princess Hilda had tricked him. Hilda then orders Yuga Ganon to take the Triforce of Courage from him, but the latter betrays her. Yuga then reveals his plan to become all-powerful and then turns Princess Hilda into a painting. He then takes the Triforce of Wisdom from Hilda and engages in a fight with Link. Yuga Ganon is ultimately defeated by Link, and Yuga is killed. Ganon's soul, however, survives.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom[]

Main article: Ganon (Echoes of Wisdom)

Null discovers the existence of Ganon and creates an echo copy of him. This copy is eventually defeated by Princess Zelda.

The Legend of Zelda[]

Link fights Ganon in Zelda I by Katsuya Terada

Link and Ganon's showdown in Death Mountain.

Ganon is eventually resurrected and leads a huge invasion against Hyrule. Ganon regains the Triforce of Power and then goes for the Triforce of Wisdom to gain complete power. However, Princess Zelda breaks the Triforce of Wisdom into eight pieces and scatters them throughout Hyrule. Impa is then sent to go search for help. Ganon then kidnaps Zelda and takes her to Death Mountain under Spectacle Rock and sends his minions to chase after Impa. Link (possibly a descendant of the Hero of Legend) then goes to assemble the Triforce of Wisdom's pieces. He successfully assembled each piece of the Triforce of Wisdom and uses it to shine it on Ganon's lair. The King of Evil hides his face, and then engages in a final fight against Link. Ganon is seemingly invincible at first, but he is then overpowered by Link's silver arrows and is reduced to dust. Link then takes the Triforce of Power and saves Zelda with restored Triforce of Wisdom. Peace in Hyrule is then restored as Ganon has been killed once and for all.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link[]

Many years prior to the events of the game and its predecessor, an individual known as The Magician manipulated the Prince of Hyrule in an attempt to locate the Triforce of Courage. Before his death, The Magician cast a spell on Zelda, making her fall asleep for eternity due to her not giving him the location of the Triforce of Courage.

Game Over Screen

Many years later, during the events of the game, though Ganon is deceased, the evil in his heart was causing chaos in Hyrule. The remaining members of Ganon's monster army, regrouped and called in new reinforcements from the Dark Realm in an attempt to kill Link to use his blood to revive Ganon. Ganon gets non-canonically revived if Link dies during his journey in the event of the player getting a game over. The plans of Ganon's minions are thwarted when Link reunites the Triforce to heal the land of Hyrule, killing any chance of Ganon's return.

Trivia[]

  • Many of Agahnim's traits and actions would be incorporated into Ganondorf's character in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
    • This is the only version of Ganon that isn't seen as Ganondorf in any games of his respective timeline.
  • In the games, Agahnim is an alter-ego to Ganon. In the manga adaptations of the game, however, he is a separate character.
  • While unconfirmed, it is possible that Agahnim/Ganon was responsible for the series of disasters that he later stopped, as a plot to gain favor with the King of Hyrule.
  • This is the most recurring version of Ganondorf/Ganon, having appeared/mentioned in a total of seven games.
  • The first two Legend of Zelda games are the only cases where Ganon is a major character yet lacks artwork in the game; the first game representing Ganon with simply a giant question mark in the manual to keep his appearance a surprise.
