Ganon is the main antagonist of Yū Mishōzaki's 1987 manga series The Legend of Zelda and its 1991 sequel, Zelda II: The Adventures of Link, both serving as adaptations of the 1986 and 1987 video games of the same names.
This is one of the earliest portrayal of the Demon King Ganon, who rules over the Demon Tribe who in both his appearances in the series, is portrayed as a ruthless, eldritch conqueror who was sealed in the Great Temple by the original Princess Zelda, Ganon seeks the power of the Triforce to turn it into his hellish domain, becoming the sworn enemy of both Link and Princess Zelda.
Biography[]
Past[]
Ganon is the ruler of the Demon Tribe who seeks to conquer Hyrule and make it his hellish domain. In the past, the original Princess Zelda had used the power of the Triforce to seal Ganon in the Great Temple in the realm of the demons. However, Ganon's power is too big so fragments are able to leak out of the seal to remain terrorizing Hyrule.
Zelda I[]
During a night where her heart was being clouded and the Triforce's seal was weakened, Zelda XVI was ambushed by Ganon who proceeded to kill her just as her daughter Zelda XVII tried to help. Three years, when a cycloptic snake demon assaults a group of adventurers, Zelda steps in to mend the wounds with Impa explaining that the creature was a crony of Ganon who was leading the demons in the conquest of warping Hyrule into a demon-infested realm.
Zelda is determined to see that the stolen Triforce of Power was retrieved before Hyrule falls to ruin. After Zelda manages to escape from her bedroom, she and Link were fighting demons before Ganon intervenes, telling her that it was a very long time since they have last met. He proclaims that life is a meal for the demons and their life force strengthens Ganon.
With the Triforce of Power, Ganon vows to consume all, calling Zelda XVI's weakness the key needed to free himself and used the darkness in his soul to empower the relic. As the younger Zelda declares they fight, Ganon tells her that it will not be the same as it had been three years prior.
Zelda asks for Link to step back as she tries to kill Ganon, but it did not take as Ganon shows up alive and grasps her, exclaiming that the negative aspects of men's heart only give him power and will only weaken her Triforce. Just as he called the world property of the demons, Zelda screams for Link to escape and she breaks her Triforce to pieces in order to scatter them so that Ganon cannot claim them.
Just as the knights of Hyrule arrived, Ganon proceeds to head for Death Mountain with Zelda in his grasp. He later gets into an argument with a crony over a perceived slight regarding the Triforce. He only calms down when the Triforce of Power was being protected by a barrier. A dragon is sent to claim the broken Triforce shards as Ganon was not willing to let it fall into the next member of Zelda's bloodline.
As the King of Hyrule is heading to Ganon's base, the demon chieftain tells his crony that only the Triforce mattered now, and they are holding Zelda captive. As it turns out, anyone who approached Death Mountain will have their life force sapped. When Ganon hears that Link slew the Goriya Bros., he orders for the boy's head to be claimed as he was a threat to his conquest.
After Link manages to slay Gleeok, Ganon flies into a rage and asks a crony if Link claimed most of the triforce components. The crony explains that Link was getting pacier with the aid of an elf whom he does not know was his aunt. In addition, the Triforce is regaining power while the power of the demons wanes.
Ganon's elite still fell despite trying an approach by dividing. Ganon declared he's had enough of Link's meddling and orders for him to be brought to Death Mountain and die there. Soon, one of Ganon's demons proceeds to attack an inn just as the owner and his daughter were about to leave. However, Link manages to interfere in this attempt and fire a projectile at the attacker.
The dying demon was revealed to be bringing a message to Link from Ganon who was demanding the hero to arrive within seven days or Zelda dies. After Link arrives, Ganon greets him at Death Mountain where Link realizes that an attack he struck Ganon with had no effect due to the Triforce of Power. It is here that Ganon demands for Link to surrender the Triforce of Wisdom.
Ganon was about to use the Triforce to break the seal of the Spirit World in hopes of claiming all of Hyrule. But Link uses a smokescreen to hinder him while he strikes Ganon in the forehead. As Link makes an attempt to save Zelda, Ganon gets enraged at Link before dropping dead.
Zelda II[]
Three years after Ganon's defeat, Ganon's demons arrive to terrorize a town. When Zelda and Link greet the spirit of Zelda I, she revealed that she fought Ganon 17 generations before their birth. Two pieces of the Triforce were used to seal up Ganon after his defeat until the day the seal broke the day Zelda's mother died. In spite of Ganon's death three years ago, he is trying to come back to life and what Link destroyed was a fragment of the true Ganon who sleeps within the Great Palace within the realm of demons.
Zelda I had to set aside her body in the demon realm to keep the demon king at bay while entrusting two Triforce pieces with her soul. Zelda I also shoots down the notion that the seal can be fixed with just two Triforce Fragments. Zelda I explains that the six crystals contained in ancient borderland palaces are to be procured and a new power will be given birth so that the realm of demons can be sealed once more.
The purpose of the crystals is to give those who control this a path to the demon realm. Link is also blessed with a sword that is hyper magical with Zelda I thanking Link when he decides to give it a shot for his best. When a figure resembling Link breaks down the door at the inn, Pell and company were in shock and realize he is an imposter which results in their decision to try and keep him touching the White Sword with the fiend deciding to eat the older man's head off.
A fairy tries an energy attack only for the fiend to absorb it as he needed the power for the resurrection. Just as the fiend, suggested to be Ganon from his words, tries once more to take the power by force and seizes the White Sword. Just then, Hylian Ninja arrive to sever the arms of Ganon's human form with shuriken as they were sent by Impa to stop the demon attacks in the local area, having evacuated it of villagers.
Ganon, having known about Zelda I's blood running through his veins, seeks it out as well. Meanwhile after the first palace's crystal was inserted, Impa fears for the worst as the demon realm will fall upon Hyrule. Link is also warned of the monster that looks like him which his generation's Zelda confirms is Ganon. Link is concerned for her safety, but she decides to fight on.
Just then, Ganon crosses paths with them, asking Link if he missed him. Armed with the White Sword, now the Dark Sword, Ganon attempts to steal Link's magical sword from him before attempting to absorb them into his flesh. But Link manages to sever one of his hands. Zelda explains to Link that he can still channel the triforce of wisdom into the sword. After Ganon's Link form was left as a torso, Ganon vows not to let it go on like this, vowing that he will die when the gates of the demon realm opens.
Zelda parts ways with Link as she needs to help with dealing with the legions of demons descending on Hyrule as villagers are in danger of being killed. After inserting the last Crystal, Link and Zelda arrive at the demon realm when they fight through Ganon's legions until they find the crystalized body of Zelda I who tells him that he must defeat "the Great Ganon" in order to break the seal and she is now part of him. In order to free Zelda I so she can merge back with her soul, Link must destroy Ganon's body.
Just then, Ganon, or rather his heart, arrives to tell Link that he opened the way back to the demon realm and will bring back the whole body of Ganon. What appeared to be a meadow turned out to be the real Ganon who resisted a magic attack from Link. Ganon also is convinced Link has no chance to escape the demon realm. Link makes an attempt at Ganon's heart, but the demon king calls the attempt useless.
After Link fails, Ganon picks him up with his claws as he prepares to devour him but it backfires when Link finds he can use the Magic Sword inside the body but Ganon proclaims he will make Link a servant. Just then, the Magic Sword disappears much to Ganon's shock as he ends up screaming in pain as he dies. Free from her crystal, Zelda proves him worthy of the Triforce of Courage.
