Villain Overview

The day approaches when I shall take my revenge against the impudent boy who thwarted my ambitions, cut me down and killed me. I can't wait. I wanted to tell someone of my rising delight so I had you wake up. Heh heh heh. Hah hah ha! Hah hah ha! Hah hah hah hah ha!
~ Ganondorf gloating about his plan to Princess Zelda
At last... the time has come! I will be rid of this curse! I will sever the hateful chains of... this Triforce! I will kill the Hero once and for all! He will never be reborn and Hyrule will fall to ruin! With the flame of my hatred, I will steal everything and burn it to the ground!
~ Ganondorf beginning his invasion in "The Power of Shadow"

Demon King Ganondorf, also known as Ganon in his demonic form, is the main antagonist of the 2016 manga series The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess by Akira Himekawa, an adaptation of the 2006 video game of the same name.

A vicious conqueror and the wielder of the Triforce of Power, Ganondorf was banished into the Twilight Realm for his treacherous plans against the Kingdom of Hyrule. Having gained memories of the alternate timeline where he ruled Hyrule but was defeated by Link, as well as his fate in other timelines, Ganondorf swore vengeance against the Hero of Time and Hyrule. Ganondorf realizes that he, Link and Princess Zelda are forever interlocked in conflict and seeks to end it with him ruling over all. He is the benefactor of the Usurper King Zant. He noticeably has a more proactive role in the story than his video game counterpart.

Appearance[]

Ganondorf is a tall, muscular Gerudo warrior with greenish-brown skin, thick red hair, and golden eyes. He dons black leather armor, a jeweled crown on his forehead, and a red cape on his back. Another distinct feature is the gaping hole in Ganondorf's armor at the chest, representing the time when he was executed by Hyrule for his treacherous ambitions. As Ganon, he is a large pig-like demon with the same color scheme as his hair and skin-tone when he was a human.

Personality[]

One who possesses the power to rule worlds….cannot squander it on frivolous emotions! To do so is a sin!
~ Ganondorf rants of his god compelx

Ganondorf is a man who views himself as above the traditional balance of good and evil. He embraces his own power-hungry ambitions, and will not care who else he has to harm for the sake of his success. He adores a good fight, having goaded Link to strive against him with all his hate and rage, and seems gratified to see that his enemy can be corrupted. Ganondorf also has a huge ego thanks to his belief he is above good and evil. Due to wielding the Triforce of Power, Ganondorf believes the Gods have approved his ambitions, and resurrects Zelda just so he can gloat to her about his plan.

However, for all his evil, he is intelligent and cultured. He has a deep understanding of the destiny he, Zelda and Link face and the cycle their counterparts are trapped in, as well as the psychology of the Twili, using this to his advantage as he makes Zant his pawn to further his ambitions. In contrast to his usual view of mortals as "worms," he has an atypical fascination with Princess Zelda, and puts on a pretense of gentlemanly behavior during their encounter. However, Ganondorf is, at his core, a psychopath who only wants to kill and oppress others. The entire story has him luring Link to a final confrontation, and shrugging off whatever obstacles there is. When Link offers a truce, Ganondorf scoffs that he could ever do anything so harmonious, killing himself just so his reincarnation can threaten Hyrule once more.

Biography[]

Ganondorf was the King of Thieves that led the Gerudo for an invasion on Hyrule. Killing it's King and burning its castle, Ganondorf razed the kingdom and sought to rule the world itself. Defeated by the Hero of Time, his evil was further prevented when Princess Zelda travelled 7 years to the past to work with the Elders and banish Ganondorf to the Twilight Realm before he could wreck havoc on Hyrule right when he was about to kickstart his scheme. As he is banished to the Twilight Realm, Ganondorf gains the memories of his victory in the original timeline as well as his fate in numerous other timelines, and realizes he, Princess Zelda, and Link will be intertwined in a long conflict due to wielding the Triforces of Power, Wisdom, and Courage respectively.

Refusing to have this put an end to his ambitions, Ganondorf seeks to put an eternal end to the conflict which will see him finally him ruling all there is. Appearing as a god to Zant from his imprisonment, Ganondorf seduces the ambitious Zant for a violent coup against the Twilight Realm's royalty, cursing it's ruler, Princess Midna, to be an imp, while killing the elders for Zant to ascend as the Shadow King. Spreading dark magic through the Twilight Realm, countless Twili are transformed to monstrous Shadow Beasts who are partially aware of their eternal enslavement to Zant's will, using them and other hoards of monsters to lay death and destruction all across Hyrule as they attack and destroy villages. This all eventually leads to him finally being freed from his imprisonment and return to Hyrule.

Using Zant to threaten Hyrule with destruction to force Zelda to surrender the kingdom to him, Ganondorf awakens the captured Zelda to talk about his realization on how he, the swordsman Link and Princess Zelda are stuck in an eternal conflict as the avatars of the Triforce, while boasting about how him wielding the Triforce of Power gives him the right to dominate them and everyone else as he believes his conquest is approved by the Gods, while gloating about how he is eventually going to win the conflict and put an end to it as he plots to harness all three parts of the Triforce to merge Hyrule and the Twilight Realm to form a dark, hellish wasteland that will consume all life in both realms, turning majority of them to be monsters and kill all who still retain their humanity. He offers Zelda a chance to join him, but she refuses. He decides that he can at least use her as a weapon against Link.

Upon the death of Zant, Ganondorf decides it's time to begin the final part of his plan, unleashing his monsters to begin wiping out all life in Hyrule, leading to a huge clash with the armies of Hyrule as he waits for Link to confront him at the castle and finally kickstart his plan to merge the Light and Shadow realms. Link fights through his hoards of monsters to confront him in the Castle, demanding Ganondorf to renounce his power. Scoffing at Link's heroics, Ganondorf uses his powers to take control of Zelda against his will for a sadistic attempt to kill Link, goading Link to kill Zelda to get to him while making his intentions to give Link a slow, agonizing death as he rips out his organs and grind his bones to relish in his dying screams. However, Zelda finds the strength to resist and hold her sword against her own throat, which shocks Ganondorf and foils his assault. When Midna arrives to free Zelda from Ganondorf's control, he transforms into his demon form as Ganon to finally take Link down. However Link uses his wolf form to take Ganon down, Midna tries to use the Shadow Crystals to kill him for good.

However Ganondorf manages to kill Midna and returns to his human form for a final battle against Link and Zelda. However, one of Zelda's Light Arrows strips him of his magic and Link manages to finally defeat Ganondorf, to which he boasts about how he is immortal as even if Link kills him, he will always reincarnate. Link then realizes the eternal conflict can only end if the three avatars of the Triforce live in harmony. However Ganondorf scoffs at the thought of harmony and spitefully kills himself so that his reincarnation can threaten Hyrule again and torment Link and Zelda's future counterparts. However, Ganondorf's death saw his monster army defeated and Midna return to life and to her original form as well, to which Midna, Zelda and Link agree to sever all connections with each other to preserve both realms.

Trivia[]

  • In the game, Ganondorf loses the Triforce of Power and sees a vision of Zant snapping his own neck before dying (with Link responsible for his death). Here, he relinquishes the Triforce and the Zant scene is left out.
  • The scene where he breaks his teacup during his forced teatime with Zelda is a reference to one of his counterparts doing the same with the Fairy Ocarina.
