Ganryu is an antagonist in the Tekken franchise.
He is a sumo wrestler who seeks the ranks of yokozuna. While he worked as a bodyguard for Kazuya Mishima during the events of the second King of the Iron Fist Tournament, he was ordered to achieve an amulet from Michelle Chang. After defeated and rejected by Michelle, Ganryu fell in love with her and give up his life of crime and cleaned his name in the sumo business and being an honest man. During the fourth tournament, he saw a young fighter named Julia Chang, the adoptive daughter of Michelle and developed feelings for her and will do anything to earn her affection.
In Japanese, he has been voiced by Banjō Ginga in the original Tekken, Takashi Nagasako in all appearances from Tekken 2 to Tekken Tag Tournament, and Hidenari Ugaki (who also voiced Birdie and Goro Majima) in all appearances since Tekken 5. In English, he has been voiced by Lowell B Bartholomee in Tekken: The Motion Picture, Paul St Peter in Tekken: Blood Vengeance, and Earl Baylon in Tekken: Bloodline.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Ganryu is a successful sumo wrestler and the youngest and strongest to reach the rank of yokozuna and own a sumo wrestling stable. However, his arrogant, greedy attitude and gambling habits led him to dismissed him from sumo wrestling, leading him into a life of crime and illegal gambling, where he became wealthy.
Tekken[]
Ganryu hears about the King of Iron Fist Tournament and enters to prove his strength. In the tournament, he fought and loses to Yoshimitsu, the leader of the Manji Clan and takes the sumo wrestler's wealth and gives it to the poor.
Tekken 2[]
Ganryu once again enters the second tournament while also working as a bodyguard for Kazuya Mishima and paying him more enough to feed the sumo wrestler's gambling addiction. While on a task to steal a amulet from a Native-American fighter named Michelle Chang. When he meets her for the first time, he feel in love with her. After being rejected by her, he turn his back on life of crime and move to Hawaii to open his sumo wrestling stable of his own to try to impress Michelle and happily lived his new life.
Ending: Ganryu is seen in a sumo wrestling arena and does some sumo moves. The movie ends with a close-up of a photograph of Ganryu.
Tekken Tag Tournament[]
Ending: Ganryu walks up to Michelle on one knee and offers her flowers to win her feelings. But Michelle said no to him and leaves him shocked and disappointed.
Tekken 5[]
Years later, Ganryu, now 55 years old, was watching a the fourth tournament on TV and saw Julia, who reminded him of Michelle. He immediately fell in love with her and enter the fifth tournament after hearing that Julia has also entered to recover the Forest Rejuvenation Data disc. Ganryu throught that winning the tournament would provide him the opportunity to recover the reforestation program disc and give it to Julia to win her affection.
Ending: Ganryu is seen at a small bridge in his sumo gear with a dickie-bird bowtie around his neck with a rose. Julia runs up to him, he gives her the Forest Rejuvenation Data disc to her, who thanked him for this. Ganryu then confess his love for Julia and pulls out an engagement ring and yells, "I'm in love with you!" However, Julia disappears and left Ganryu disappointment and shock.
Tekken 6[]
This led a dejected Ganryu to return to Hawaii and indulge another passion of his, food and cookery, and he opened a restaurant called "Chanko Paradise". However, the restaurant was not the success he had hoped, and Ganryu fell on financial difficulties. Upon learning of a sixth tournament, Ganryu entered in the hopes of winning the prize money to fund his restaurant. Ganryu failed to win the tournament and, as he did not return for the seventh tournament, the fate of him, and his restaurant, remain unknown.
During the fifth tournament, Ganryu got lost and accidentally entered the Mishima Financial Group's research facility, but found the reforestation program disc. He managed to give to Julia, who only accepted the disc and not his him. After returning to Hawaii, he opened an restaurant called Chanko Paradise. Unfortunately, success was not forthcoming and he soon found himself in financial difficulty. When the sixth tournament was announced, he sees the opportunity to promote his restaurant with the prize money. However, he soon failed to win the prize money.
Ending: After defeating Azazel, Ganryu picks up the orb that was in Azazel and transforms him into Devil Ganryu, having grew horns, wings, long nails, and have the Devil Mark on his back. After that, Ganryu attempted to fly away, but fails due to his weight.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2[]
Ending: While walking in the hallway, Ganryu sees Julia's door slightly open and peeks inside her room, where he sees her Jaycee's mask. Even he knows he shouldn't be doing this, he continues to peek inside the room and sees her in the shower. As he watches, Lei Wulong appears and arresting and charging him with voyeurism. While he takes him anyway, Ganryu tries to explain his innocence to Lei and wanted to still watch Jaycee.
Tekken 7[]
After entering in the sixth tournament, Chanko Paradise became popular and found himself busy to his newfound success. One day, he sees an online video with Julia starting a crowdfunding campaign for her reforestation program. Ganryu quickly donated to her cause. However, he gave his entire restaurant funds to her cause and was facing a crisis. Ganryu decided to make himself known on the internet through videos like Julia herself. Despite being one of the few online figures to come out of the sumo world, he struggled to gain enough viewers to monetize his efforts. Ganryu then noticed that Heihachi Mishima was holding the seventh King of the Iron Fist Tournament. He wears an extravagant outfit and participate in the tournament in order to draw attention to himself and increase his subscriber count, while also win the prize money to solve all his problems.
Tekken Forever[]
In the comic book, Ganryu serves as a supporting antagonist and one of Kazuya's bodyguards.
Tekken: The Motion Picture[]
In the OVA, he serves as a minor character and was voiced by Takashi Nagasako in the Japanese dub and Lowell B. Bartholomee in the English dub. He serves as a bodyguard for Lee Chaolan and was last seen defeated by Michelle Chang.
Tekken: Blood Vengeance[]
Ganryu appears in the 2012 animated film as a minor character and a PE teacher at Mishima Polytechnical School. Unlike his original counterpart, he shown to be very strict and serious character. He is first seen waiting her Ling Xiaoyu arrive at school and takes her to the principal's office. He tells her that she's been expelled and transferred to Kyogoku Academy. He also tell her that she cost the school three hundred grand for the gym repairs because she destroys something when she's in P.E. and mentions that she failed every subject and complete lack of discipline. He then asks the "principal" what's next, the chair turns to reveal Anna Williams, as the principal and assigns Xiaoyu on a mission of gathering information on a student named Shin Kamiya.
