Biography[]
Background[]
Ganya was born in Russia and at some point migrated to New York. It is unknown how he became the head of the Russian mafia. Ganya married Marina at an unknown point in time.
Orange is the New Black[]
Ganya meets Galina "Red" Reznikov and her husband Dmitri when the mafia has a meeting in their café. Dmitri is resolute on making a good impression to elevate his social status and tries to pander to them. In doing so, Dmitri begins to neglect Red. When Red is introduced to the mafia wives, she struggles to fit in and behaves awkwardly under the pressure.
When Red realises she is being excluded from the mafia wives, she ruptures Marina's breast implant. Ganya demands Dmitri and Red pay him for the surgery, but they cannot afford it. In an effort to bridge the gap, Dmitri offers Red's kitchen to dispose of their bodies and conduct their meetings.
As time goes on, Red becomes increasingly more involved in the mafia. She demonstrates her confidence and logic which impresses Ganya, and invites her to sit with him. Red becomes responsible for much of the goings-on in the mafia and becomes desensitised to the amount of bodies in her freezer.
One evening, Ganya introduces Red to a new recruit to the mafia, Ilya, a young, naïve boy. Red immediately takes a maternal approach to Illya. Red becomes involved with a new project to make money whereby mafia-affiliated businesses become affiliated with prisoners to pass their drugs and contraband to. Ganya goes forward with this idea which becomes a success.
Ilya becomes tasked with handling a Serbian mafia rival, which it is heavily implied that he does not want to do (nor be a part of the mafia), hoping to settle down and marry instead of kill. In an attempt to protect Ilya, Red confronts Ganya, saying she does not believe Ilya is equipped to deal with such a big job. This throws Ganya into a rage and tells Red it is not her place to question his decision-making. However, Red refuses to take his fury and says that is exactly why she is invited to his meetings, and demands he not use Ilya for the operation due to his youth and prospect.
The following night, Ganya returns with a body and tells her that she was right and should not have used Ilya. Red looks at the body and sees that Ganya and his gang have killed Ilya, throwing Red into a disarrayed state of emotion. After Red is imprisoned, Ganya uses his status in the mafia to ensure no one visits her café, causing it to go out of business.
