Villain Overview

Gargamel: I said "All of that is about to change". Azrael that's your cue! That's your cue to pounce on the miserable beasts in some kind of a rage-inducedd feline frezny.
[Azrael attacking one of Gargamel's wooden Smurfs puppets]
Gargamel: Yes, good. Yeah. More rage. Hey, but don't go crazy. These are the only pupets I have.
Azrael: [Meows]
Gargamel: I am not obsessed with Smurfs, thank you. I simply can't stop thinking about the miserable beasts every single minute of every single day.
Azrael: [Meows]
Gargamel: 'Cause I need them! It is only by capturing the little wretches and extracting their happy blue essence that my magic will finally become... Ugh, not unfathomable.
Azrael: [Meows]
Gargamel: Invincible! Yes. Thank you. I shall become the most powerful wizard in all of the world. [sinister laughing]
Azrael: [Meowing sinister laughing]
Gargamel: Yeah, but you're milking it. Don't milk it.
~ Gargamel on his plot to capture the Smurfs and extract their essence to become the most powerful wizard in the world.
Oh whatever would I do with all of this power, oh, wait a minute, that's it, I'm going rule the entire world.
~ Gargamel revealing his plot after he uses the Smurf essence.

In the live-action series, he was both portrayed and voiced by Hank Azaria, who also voiced Snake Jailbird, Johnny Tightlips, The Grand Pumpkin, Killer Toupée, The Leader, The Devil, Cesar, Don Vittorio D'Maggio, Adolf Hitler, Dexter Colt, Frank Grimes, Jr., and Les Moore in The Simpsons, Whit in Run Fatboy Run, Venom in Spider Man: The Animated Series, Kahmunrah in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Carlos in Hop. History[]

Early Life[]

Gargamel's past is not fully explored, but he claimed that his father had once thrown him down a well in his childhood but the young Gargamel managed to climb his way out, to the disappointment of his father.

The Smurfs[]

Gargamel appears as the main antagonist in this movie. His plots to use the Smurfs essence to become the most powerful wizard in the world. When he chases the Smurfs away from their village they end up in New York City, while Gargamel pursued them. There, he teams up with his cat Azrael, and his short-lived henchwoman Odile Anjelou.

When he gets a dragon wand, he captures Papa Smurf and takes him to his castle in Central Park where he uses his essence to power up his dragon wand and use it against his Smurf family and their human friends Grace and Patrick. Gargamel was defeated and his powers were gone and he was stuck in New York City powerless and while the Smurfs went back to Smurf Village with victory and no Gargamel to bother him.

In a mid-credits scene, Gargamel is still shown to have survived, cradling Azrael. He then breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience what they're looking at before zapping the screen.

The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol[]

As he's still stuck in the present day, Gargamel is unable to make a physicial appearence in this movie. However, he does appear in Grumpy's dream in his 2D cartoon form as Azrael and him tries to catch him but they comically fail.

The Smurfs 2[]

Gargamel returns as the main antagonist in the sequel, this time he uses the last of his magic to become a famous celebrity magician in Paris and has two new creations called the Naughties to help him capture the Smurfs. He captures Smurfette to get the formula that Papa used to turn her into a real Smurf so he can turn his Naughties into real Smurfs and use their essence to become more powerful and rule the world.

When Smurfette refuses to tell him the formula, Gargamel and his naughties plot to be nice for her to become one of them to persuade her to tell them the formula. When she does, he puts his naughties and Smurfette in his Smurf extracting machine to take their essence and use it to control over the world. When Papa Smurf and the three other Smurfs come to rescue Smurfette, Patrick and Victor arrive and destroy Gargamel's machine and unleash all of the Smurf magic, which carries everyone out of the castle. Smurfette shoots Gargamel away with Azrael and they fly across Paris, then Gargamel shoots a portal into the water he and Azrael end up back in their castle, but after a painful fall. Back being poor and live in poverty since they have returned. They get into a fight and he is then attacked by Azrael with his claws.

The Smurfs: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow[]

In this special movie, like A Christmas Carol, Gargamel appears in the flashback story 2D animated like his cartoon counterpart and while he has a minor role, he becomes a supporting antagonist even though he's still an important character. Five years after the events of the second film, Gargamel is trying to find a way to find the Smurfs again so he can be able to catch them and apparently he and Azrael never returned to Paris. Azrael interrupts him and tells him that there are three Smurfs close to his castle, much to his excitement. Gargamel finds Smurfette and tries to get her but was defeated in a fight with the other two Smurfs until the Headless Horseman appears and chases all of them, forcing Gargamel and Azrael to temporarily team up with the Smurfs to escape. Once they arrive at the bridge, the Horseman cannot step there and gets mocked by the wizard and his cat until he throws a flaming pumpkin at them, causing Gargamel and Azrael to fall into the lake before being dragged by the water to a waterfall. They managed to survive and most likely came back to hunt the Smurfs after this.

Powers and Abilities[]

Gargamel has no magical powers in himself. However, his determination, deceit and the artifacts he uses to produce magical effects make him a dangerous enemy.

In the two films in which he appears, he uses the dragon wand to generate rays of energy or tentacles to seize his opponents, or even change the appearance of other living beings; this transformation, however, is temporary.
