Gargantos is a minor antagonist in the 2022 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It was an octopus-like creature that was summoned by Scarlet Witch to hunt and capture America Chavez for her powers, only to soon be stopped by Doctor Strange and Wong before getting stabbed to death by a lamppost.

Biography[]

Upon being discovered by the Scarlet Witch via the Darkhold, Gargantos was sent to New York to kidnap multiverse traveler America Chavez who had just arrived to Earth-199999. The Doctor Strange of that universe soon notified the chase and came to intervene.

Gargantos attack — Gargantos on Earth-616

After seeing one of its tentacles getting cut off by Strange, Gargantos gets angry and lobs a bus at him and Chavez but he soon slices the bus in half just before the creature slaps the sorcerer into Jonas and James. Chavez then tried to escape without Gargantos noticing, but the creature manages to find her underneath it and continues to chase her with nearby cars being destroyed. Gargantos soon manages to have Chavez in its grasps using its tentacles but Wong appears from an inter dimensional portal and snatched Chavez from the creature’s tentacles. Wong tries to confront Gargantos but the creature somehow grabs him with its tentacles. Gargantos continues its chase on Chavez once again but Strange’s cloak manages to lift Chavez up to a building. Gargantos stops the cloak by throwing a motorcycle at it since the creature couldn’t reach it. Strange then frees Wong from Gargantos’ grasp by throwing a magical ax at the tentacle that was holding Wong. The creature still doesn’t give up its search on Chavez and continues its goal. It manages to catch up to her but Strange somehow casts a spell that causes the creature to slip. Agitated, Gargantos grabs Strange with one of its tentacles and stares at him angrily. However, Chavez and the Cloak manage to distract the creature with the latter covering its eye. Strange then saw the opportunity to grab a lamppost and stabs the creature in its eye, killing it for good.

Trivia[]

According to the original Marvel Comics, Gargantos was originally at the command of Lemurian King Naga.
Despite being inspired by the design of Shuma-Gorath of Marvel Comics fame, Marvel Studios unfortunately couldn’t legally use the name due to it originating from Robert E. Howard’s The Curse of the Golden Skull, with Funcom’s Heroic Standards holding the rights to the Shuma-Gorath name. It was later revealed in the commentary of the film by one of the writers Michael Waldron that Gargantos wouldn't be confused with Shuma-Gorath.
