“ | They are merely shells that are empty on the inside. They're the shells of spies from an enemy nation sent to investigate Ikana. They have been unable to forget their living days. Even now their spirits— emptiness cloaked in darkness— continue to spy. | „ |
~ Pamela's father describing the Garo. |
“ | To die without leaving a corpse... That is the way of us Garo. | „ |
~ The Garo motto. |
The Garo are major antagonists in the 2000 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and its 2015 remake.
They are an undead tribe of ninjas who invaded the Ikana Kingdom in pursuit of power and took over the Stone Tower Temple.
History[]
Backstory[]
Long ago, the Garo, led by the Garo Master, invaded the Ikana Kingdom. Seeking to usurp King Igos du Ikana, the Garo Master dispatched numerous spies, the Garo Robes, to stealthily invade the region. After years of war, the Garo took over the Stone Tower Temple while the forces of Ikana continued to defend the king's castle. Eventually, all the warriors on both sides were either killed in battle or died of old age.
Majora's Mask[]
In his travels, Link earns a Garo mask from the Gorman Brothers. By wearing the mask, Link is granted access to Ikana Kingdom. There, he is confronted by the restless spirits of the Garo, who have been brought back from the dead by the Skull Kid using Majora's Mask.
As he defeats the Garo, the ninjas grant Link information on how to navigate the region, before seemingly committing ritual suicide out of respect. After gaining access to the Stone Tower Temple, Link defeats the Garo Master and obtains the Light Arrows as a reward, which he then uses to turn the temple upside-down.
With the Ikana put to rest and the Garo defeated, Link cleanses the Stone Tower Temple of Majora's influence and ends the war.
