~ Garoben threatening Sailor Moon |
Garoben (ガロベン Garoben) is a monster of the day appearing in Sailor Moon. She is a Youma working for the Dark Kingdom who was sent by Jadeite to collect energy for Queen Metalia. To do this, she impersonated an instructor at Ami's computer school, the Crystal Seminar, who manipulated students into inserting cursed disks into their computers so she could brainwash them.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Hiroko Emori in the 90's anime and by Mami Koyama in Crystal. In English, she was voiced by Maria Vacratsis in the DiC dub of the 90's anime and Kate Higgins in the Viz Media dub of the 90's anime.
Biography[]
Garoben was sent by Jadeite to gather energy for Queen Metalia while disguised as an instructor at the Crystal Seminar, a computer school attended by Usagi Tsukino's new friend Ami Mizuno. There, she manipulated several students by instructing them to insert cursed disks into their computers as a way of collecting energy from them, under the guise of a false promise that they would become geniuses by using the disks. After Usagi arrived, Garoben took Ami hostage realizing that she wasn't using her disk and showed her true form. In the 90's anime, Luna was initially led to suspect that Ami could be a Youma, but those suspicions were proven wrong when Garoben revealed herself as the real Youma.
Garoben attacks by psychically hurling papers at her targets, as well as slashing with her claw-like fingernails. In the 90's anime, she can mind-control her students and turn her arm into an axe. When Sailor Moon found herself in trouble thanks to Garoben's tactics, Ami transformed into Sailor Mercury for the first time. In the 90's anime, Luna discovered the mark of Mercury when Garoben painfully gripped Ami's head. Sailor Mercury used Bubble Blast and created a fog that proved effective by making her shiver from the cold it provided and also, in the 90's anime, wearing off Garoben's control over the students. Garoben made a futile attempt to take advantage of the fog, but in the manga and Crystal, Tuxedo Mask saved Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon then used her tiara attack (named "Moon Frisbee" in the manga's early editions, "Moon Tiara Action" in the classic anime, "Moon Tiara Magic" in the DiC dub, and "Moon Tiara Boomerang" in the manga's most recent editions and Crystal), which sliced through Garoben and destroyed her.
