You gotta not think about the things out of your control. Think about your plan.
Gary Barkovitch participated in the Long Walk and later told a reporter that he is participating to "dance on the graves" of the other walkers. Barkovitch provokes another walker into attacking him, resulting in the walker being killed. The other walkers ostracized Barkovitch for causing the walker's death. One of the walkers, Scramm, was killed, and Ray Garraty, among other walkers, agreed that whoever wins should give money to Scramm's wife. Garraty asks Barkovitch if he agrees, and he does, due to the ostracizing from the others. Garraty later got angry at Barkovitch, who kills himself after he is taunted by the other walkers.
Film[]
Gary Barkovitch participated in the Long Walk and was given the number "5." Barkovitch appeared to be a bully, but also a loner. One of the other walkers began having a seizure and Barkovitch tauntingly jumped over the walker, who was then executed by a soldier. Later, Barkovitch began taunting Rank, making fun of his name and joking that he was a result of a failed abortion. This provoked Rank, who began swinging at Barkovitch, but failed to do so and fell against the road, causing his face to be scrapped against it. Rank is injured and struggles to get up, and is shot in the head by a soldier, much to the horror of Barkovitch and the other walkers. Rank's death angers the other walkers, who ostracize Barkovitch and call him a killer.
Barkovitch's guilt and loneliness later makes him beg Ray Garraty to join his group. Garraty allows Barkovitch to join, even though he is shown to be very unstable. Not long after, Barkovitch has a mental breakdown and runs in front of the other walkers. He takes out a sharp spoon and stabs himself three times in the neck before falling to the road. The other walkers walk past Barkovitch, who is shot in the head by a soldier.
Personality[]
Though a sadistic, callous bully on the outside, deep down Gary Barkovitch is an insecure loner with a desperate need to belong. Ironically, his deplorable actions do precisely the opposite of what he intended, leaving him ostracized and loathed by his fellow walkers. Eventually his guilty conscience, coupled with the psychological degradation caused by the long walk, leads to his gruesome suicide. Perhaps it was a way to atone for what he had done, a final expression of the insecure self-loathing he so wished to compensate for. Or maybe it was a twisted form of revenge, a way to leave a lasting, traumatizing impression on the people he so desperately wanted approval and acceptance from.
