“ | A riddle, priest. How do you make a portal to Hell? Sometimes, it waits for the one who already walked through it. Sometimes, it opens itself in the deepest, darkest room where nobody can find it. And sometimes... it comes walking right up to you. | „ |
~ Gary Miller before confronting John Ward. |
Gary Miller, real name Astaroth, is the main antagonist of Faith: The Unholy Trinity. He is responsible for most of if not all the paranormal events and activities occurring between 1986 and 1987, including goading the young girl, Amy Martin, into being possessed by The UNSPEAKABLE. He is the leader of the Eternal Order of the Second Death and the archenemy of John Ward.
Biography[]
Past[]
Gary was originally one of the many dead fetuses that were inserted by cultists of the Eternal Order of the Second Death into the portal to hell carved into Miriam Bell, the then leader of the cult. As the cultists sent many dead fetuses to hell one came back alive. This corrupted baby was named Gary and raised by the cult so that he may bring the Unspeakable into earth.
He became obsessed with opening a portal to hell with the assistance of his Cult Of The Second Death, seeking to prepare the world for the antichrist, he tried to accomplish this with many of his subjects but none of them succeeded completely, merely turning into monster, one of them in particular, Tiffany was known to have an infatuation with him, causing her to go insane after Gary simply dismissed her and went to find a better vessel. At some point he received a "pet" from his friend and fellow cult leader, Jakob.
Eventually, Gary found the perfect vessel he was looking for in the young girl, Amy Martin who began working in his childbirth clinic. He and his cult corrupted her by making a demon possess her body before conducting the Second Death ritual on her. However, John Ward and Father Allred intervened by attempting to exorcize her, but although the demon possessing proved to be stronger than the duo originally believed the ritual was ruined, forcing Gary to find a new vessel.
Faith: Chapter 1[]
In the first chapter of Faith, Gary is barely seen, the only way to tell when an event is related to him it's by noting the red colored objects and letters, which are the less used in the game. Gary is responsible for turning both Michael and Amy into monsters, seemingly goading them into joining his cult (As implied by his letters) and performing a ritual on them instead.
In the 3rd ending, after John shoots at an offering (presumably made by Gary's cult) Gary and his followers stop John on the road and seemingly butcher him to death.
Faith: Chapter 2[]
While Gary doesn't physically appears, he is mentioned more than once and the player can find more notes detailing his involvement in previous events.
If John performs certain tasks, Gary will leave a letter for him praising his devotion and announcing "they"'ll be visiting him soon. In the ending of the game The Second Death come to John's house, summon UNSPEAKABLE, and make him cry tears of blood.
Faith: Chapter 3[]
Gary now takes a Major role, directly interacting with the player and serving as the final boss of the game and therefore, the franchise.
Gary is the owner of the appartment block seeing halfway through the game, his cult also seems to have taken over a daycare (If he hadn't already), he uses both of this locations as bases of operation where he and his cult perform satanic rituals, through out the game he leaves a various set of notes mocking John's attempts at stoping him, and trying to make him question his allegiance. When a police officer comes investigating the recent disapearances around the daycare Gary's followers grab him and beat him to death, putting the whole facility under police watch.
At some point he kidnaps John's friend, Lisa, who also lived in the same block, revealing the other tenants where also on Gary's cult, but John gets her out, then explores deeper. It's revealed that Gary is trying to find a human body that can work as a vessel and that Amy Martin wasn't even the first, he leaves many monsters and demons running free around the apparment block to kill John, including Tiffany, who is still furious over the fact that Gary choose Amy as a vessel over her, after John manages to break part of the seal Gary thanks him on getting rid of her.
When John manages to sneak in the cult's cave under the daycare, Gary assaults him out of nowhere and injects him with a mysterious substance, causing him to have strange hallucinations, John eventually manages to escape Gary's cult on the night of Halloween, finding out Gary has attempted the ritual on his cult's members and at least a dozen of them ended up dying as a result, they also seem to have killed all the officers outside the building.
Eventually John manages to break the seal to a mysterious door with the help of Father García, and confronts Gary himself, who congratulates him on getting this far and allows him to ask 3 questions to the player's choice, before declaring John has inconvenienced him for far too long and proceeding to try to dispose of him, after his first battle Gary tries to grab John, but he's grievously shooted at by Father García, forcing him to retreat to the crucible of the Profane Sabbath.
If the player didn't defeat the secret bosses, the entrance will remain sealed by the Unholy Trinity and John and García will be forced to close simply close the gate leaving Gary sealed, but alive.
If the three bosses were defeated, John pursues Gary through the crucible and confronts him for the final time, now revealing his true, demonic form. John’s crucifix proves to be too much for Gary to handle, so Malphas arrives to aid him in his fight. Even so, it is too much for the duo to handle, making them possess Miriam as a last ditch effort to save their plans and the Profane Sabbath.
Despite the combined power of the demonic lords on the Mother of all Demons, John successfully manages to exorcise them from Miriam, and then lighting her body on fire with a torch nearby. As she is one of the sources of demonic activity that also granted the demons their power, her death meant that Malphas has no more power to remain on Earth, causing him to wither away back into Hell, while for Gary himself has no more power to grant him demonic abilities, turning him into (ironically) a normal human being.
As Miriam explodes with her blood raining down, Amy floats down. Gary walks over, admiring in all her glory before standing in front of her waiting for her embrace. In an act of betrayal however, a hand shoots out from the portal and grabs Gary’s face, much to his shock. Calling him a failure for failing to initiate the Profane Sabbath, Gary is dragged back into hell.
If the player directly decides to go back home at the start of the game, then Gary will never actually appear directly, but he will succeed in his plan off-screen, with his minions storming John Ward's house trying to kill him and him getting dragged into his own memories, the ending also implies he was taken as a different vessel.
Personality[]
Gary is shown to be a cold-blooded man that reveres in the chaos he creates by constantly unleashing devils to possess people. He doesn't discriminate by age as some of his victims are teenagers or young kids, he has also murdered animals in some of his rituals. Despite this Gary's letters shows that he can fake a warmer personality acting like a caring and fatherly figure to those who either serve under him or plans to turn them into demons, his followers are blindly obedient to him whether this is because of his fake charm or true nature is unclear, he always uses the same phrase to his followers "Gary loves you", but still demands for his tenants to pay rent.
Appearance[]
At first Gary resembles a normal bald human with some facial hair, often wearing a hooded robe and a pair of sunglasses. Although, it appears that he also possesses a third eye in his forehead.
When confronting John, Gary slowly reveals his true self, transforming into a horrid monster with a maw. During their second battle, Gary loses any resemblance to a human, taking the form of towering deformed monster with claws and inverted legs.
