Gekkou of Illusions is the leader of Dark Shadow and one of the four main antagonists of GoGo Sentai Boukenger alongside Arch Priest Gajah, Ryuuwon and Furious Demon God Gai.
He is the one who creates Tsukumogami for Dark Shadow by performing a ritual to imbue inanimate objects with life and the one who performs the technique to enlarge them.
He is voiced by Banjo Ginga, who later voiced Pollution President Batcheed in Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-onger and also famously voiced Gihren Zabi in Mobile Suit Gundam.
Biography[]
GoGo Sentai Boukenger[]
Gekkou of Illusions was originally a human ninja who was a member of the "Society of Shadow" ninja clan. When Hermit's Gorge was terrorized by the Demon Bird, Gekkou took possession of the Demon Bird's body in order to seal it, trapping its remaining power in a shrine and resulting in him being transformed into a regular looking owl.
Gekkou sent Shizuka of the Wind and Jougami to steal the Blades of the Three Kingdoms, leading Dark Shadow to come into conflict with the Boukengers, who were also seeking the Precious. During this time, Dark Shadow was approached by Arch Priest Gajah, who proposed an alliance between Dark Shadow and the Gordom Civilization and offered them his Karths, but after seeing his ninjas easily defeat the Karths Gekkou wasn't impressed and declined Gajah's offer. After Jougami was defeated by the Boukengers, Gekkou performed the "Ogami Transformation Technique" to enlarge the defeated Tsukumogami.
Dark Shadow's next operation would be to steal the Imperial Pearl in order to obtain the blueprints for the Bio Panzer tank off of it. Gekkou of Illusions created Takumigami to devour the Imperial Pearl and manufacture the Bio Panzer tank based on the blueprints off of it, and sent Takumigami and Shizuka to retrieve the Pearl. Takumigami was able to obtain the Imperial Pearl and create the Bio Panzer tank, but was beaten back and defeated by the Boukengers with their GoGo Vehicles. Gekkou then revived and enlarged Takumigami with his Ogami Ninpou to do battle against the Boukengers in their mecha.
After Dark Shadow was hired by a businessman to steal the Nami Uemono dolls, Gekkou of Illusions sent Yaiba of Darkness and Shizuka of the Wind to obtain the dolls. With backup from Kawazugami, they were able to obtain one of the dolls, but the other was claimed by the Boukengers.
After Yaiba of Darkness stole one of the two Pipes of Hamelin, Gekkou created Kanadegami to play the pipe and lure children over to Dark Shadow. He also revealed to his disciples that he had reconsidered Gajah's offer and received a horde of Karths from him as a "present", which he provided to Kanadegami and Shizuka to assist them in their operation. When Kanadegami was defeated, Gekkou performed the technique to revive and enlarge him.
Gekkou would later create Nendogami and have him pose as a woman claiming to be Natsuki Mamiya's sister, in order to turn her against the Boukengers and bring her into the fold of Dark Shadow.
Seeking to create a Dark Shadow animal unit, Gekkou created Zukangami and tasked Shizuka with accompanying him on a mission to transform select humans into animals that Dark Shadow could capture and train for their unit.
When the Tree of Knowledge was discovered, Gekkou attempted to create a new Tsukumogami to take part in Dark Shadow's operation to retrieve it. However, Shizuka tripped and spilled garbage onto the objects that Gekkou had gathered right as he performed his technique, resulting in Akutagami being created. Akutagami would later be executed by Yaiba of Darkness on order of Gekkou for betraying Dark Shadow, before being enlarged by Gekkou to do battle against the Boukengers.
Gekkou would eventually create a new Tsukumogami called Shirubegami to serve as teacher of the "Adventurer School" Dark Shadow had set up as a front for one of their plans.
After Dark Shadow stole the God's Head Precious and receive an offer of purchase for it on the black market, Gekkou created Mamorigami to pose as the artifact at one of two decoy locations for the sale Dark Shadow had set up to through the Boukengers off.
After New Year's, with Dark Shadow having suffered many defeats to the Boukengers, Yaiba proposed to Gekkou that they unseal the Demon Bird to use it to destroy the Boukengers but Gekkou refused, deeming it to be too dangerous. However, Yaiba disobeyed orders and slashed open the shrine at Hermit's Gorge which held the Demon Bird's power, while also sending Natsuki a letter saying she had won a free hot springs trip at Hermit's Gorge in order to lure the Boukengers there for when the Demon Bird awakened. Gekkou quickly deduced what Yaiba was trying to do after the Demon Bird's power began to grow inside of him, leading him to fly to Hermit's Gorge in order to repair the shrine. Along the way however, Gekkou became too injured to continue flying and ran into Natsuki at the Gorge as she was venturing to the site given for the hot springs. Claiming to be a forest spirit, Gekkou enlisted Natsuki's help to bring him to the site of the Demon Bird's shrine. Upon their arrival there, Gekkou instructed Natsuki to put the two halves of the shrine over the Demon Bird's statue in order to re-seal it, but Yaiba of Darkness intervened and tied both of them to posts for when the Demon Bird awakened. Gekkou warned Yaiba that the Demon Bird held the power to bring ruin to the entire world, but Yaiba simply expressed delight at getting to see such world destroying power for himself. Eventually, midnight came just as the Boukengers arrived to rescue Natsuki, resulting in the Demon Bird being released by the power of the three moons and taking over Gekkou's body. The Demon Bird proved unstoppable against all of the Boukengers' mecha and overwhelmed them until the two halves of the shrine were placed over its idol, weakening its power. While still strong, in this state the Demon Bird was overcome and defeated by the Boukengers, resulting in Gekkou returning to normal and re-sealing the Demon Bird within him. After these events, Yaiba went rogue and Gekkou proclaimed him a traitor to Dark Shadow, ordering his death.
After Arch Priest Gajah absorbed the Heart of Gordom and created swarms of Karths to patrol the city for the Brain of Gordom, Gekkou and Shizuka decided to leave Japan to find a less "noisy" country and encountered Souta on the way as he was going to rejoin his teammates. After Gajah was defeated by the Boukengers, the two Dark Shadow members resumed their operations in Japan.
With the Gordom Civilization's downfall, Gekkou and Shizuka became the only Negative Syndicate the Boukengers had fought that was still active at the end of the series. They would continue seeking out Precious to sell and on one operation came into conflict with both the Boukengers and two surviving Jaryuu Soldiers.
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie[]
Gekkou of Illusions and his disciple Shizuka of the Wind were among the reformed villains imprisoned in the Space Empire Zangyack's Makuu Prison run by Ashurada. They and the other inmates were set free by the Gokaigers while they were rescuing Gavan.
