Geldegarde Monotoli, more commonly known by his last name Monotoli, is a major antagonist in Earthbound/Mother 2, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Fourside arc of the game. He was an elevator operator before he got his hands on the Mani Mani statue, and was coerced into taking over Fourside.
Personality[]
Monotoli is truly cowardly and paranoid. While his deeds make him out to be manipulative and cunning, they were all done in the name of carrying on the Mani Mani Statue's deeds. He has a pet bear, however it won't attack the player as it's stuffed. He considers Paula a nice girl, and doesn't harm her even with the statue's influence.
He was the corrupt mayor of Fourside who previously worked for Enrich Flavor, the city's previous mayor. He had stolen the Mani Mani statue from Everdred, leading him to fall under the rule of Giygas. This had led him to usurp his former employer. He interestingly states that even though he was mind-controlled by the statue, he still had some degree of awareness of what was happening to him, but still drew himself to the statue which caused him to do all of the evil deeds he's done.
Biography[]
Monotoli was once an elevator operator content with his job at his soon-to-be very own building. However, his inner greed was easily brought out when he witnessed the Mani Mani Statue and decided to steal it from the Everdred. He quickly usurped the mayor of Fourside, Enrich Flavor, and rose to power as the new mayor of Fourside. He was convinced by the statue to give Porky Minch and his father political power, as they'd motivate some of his misdeeds.
When Ness and his friends arrive at Fourside, it's immediately clear that corruption runs rampant and Monotoli is censoring the masses from revealing the truth about him, cops are hostile threatening brutality if Ness tries something against him. He keeps anyone from seeing him at the top of his building, until he sends the Dept. Store Spook to kidnap Paula for him. However he doesn't harm her, she remains detained in his tower as Ness and Jeff set off to bring her back. Eventually, Monotoli becomes prisoner to himself when the Mani Mani Statue is destroyed in Moonside.
As he still remains in his tower, the brainwashing wears off and only Porky Minch remains to advise his vile deeds. When Ness and Jeff reach him by getting past the security with the help of the Runaway Five, he reveals he's truly a frail old man and couldn't hurt Paula if he wanted. He assures them she's in good condition, and let's the two take his helicopter to Summers so they may continue their journey. However, Porky quickly puts an end to this plot and steals the helicopter for himself, claiming that he no longer has use for Monotoli after he's become a plain old man. Later in the game, Monotoli can be seen at his tower working back at his old job again.
