Men, an invader has entered the fort! Prepare yourselves for an ambush!
~ General Falx Carius upon witnessing the Dragonborn assault Fort Frostmoth.

General Falx Carius is a supporting character in The Elder Scrolls franchise, serving as a major character in The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon and a major antagonist in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Dragonborn.

The commanding officer of Fort Frostmoth on the island of Solstheim and having survived the Bloodmoon Prophecy and promoted from Captain to General, Falx Carius was one of the many casualties when Solstheim was devastated by the eruption of Red Mountain. Resurrected by Ildari Sarothril, the undead Carius proved uncontrollable, launching an invasion of the nearby Raven Rock which Fort Frostmoth had helped found.

Biography[]

While much of his life prior to the events of Bloodmoon are unknown. At some point Falx Carius was chosen as the commanding officer of the recently completed Fort Frostmoth on the island of Solstheim after volunteering for the position. Many of his men viewed him as a good but strict man, going solely by the books no matter what, leading many to question if Carius had volunteered due to a lost bet or if he'd lost his wits. While serving as Captain, Carius played enough of a role in the founding of the nearby settlement of Raven Rock that he would be remembered for it centuries later.

In 3e 427, the Daedric Prince of the Hunt, Hircine, initiated the Bloodmoon Prophecy, a Great Hunt each era in which all manner of Werebeasts were unleashed upon the island to participate in. In particular, Hircine selected multiple four of Solstheim's greatest fighters to participate in the hunt as Hares. These included Captain Falx Carius, King Karstaag the Frost Giant, Tharsten Heart-Fang the leader of the Skaal and the Nerevarine. Kidnapped by Werewolves, Carius was brought to the hunting grounds within Mortrag Glacier along with Karstaag and Tharsten while the Nerevarine hunts them down. Unlike the other participants, Carius is spared by the Nerevarine and returns to Fort Frostmoth after the Great Hunt concludes. By 4E 5, presumably as a reward for his conduct in handling the crisis, Carius was promoted to General.

In 4E 5, during what is collectively remembered as the Red Year, the Red Mountain erupted. The devastation left by the eruptions destroyed Vvardenfell, much of mainland Morrowind and the southern parts of Solstheim. This included the destruction of Fort Frostmoth, killing all inside, including General Falx Carius. Almost 200 years later Ildari Sarothril, the undead and former apprentice of Master Neloth, broke into the ruined fort looking for undead soldiers to resurrect in her revenge plot against Neloth. Her best effort involved resurrecting Falx Carius the same way she had been with a Heart Stone, placing it in the centre of his chest. Unfortunately, every time she tried this, the general retained a measure of free will besides varying degrees of intelligence and disorientation, believing her to be an enemy invader and forcing her to remove the Heart Stone each time. Eventually giving up, she locked the undead Carius deep within the Fort and left him behind. With his mind shattered, Carius came to believe that Raven Rock, which he had helped found in life, to be an invading force, and tried sending letters to the Imperial City on how to approach this, though he lacked the means to send them.

Due to the Heart Stone, Carius had gained some form of control over the resident Ash Spawn, the (presumed) bones of Solstheim's dead infused with the ash of Red Mountain. Sending Raven Rock multiple written demands of surrender which were never received, Carius used his newfound power and launched a siege on the Dunmer settlement, sending the Ash Spawn to attack and probe it for weaknesses. After the Last Dragonborn arrived on Solstheim investigating the mysterious Miraak, they came across the Ash Spawn attacking Modyn Veleth, Captain of Raven Rock's Redoran Guard. Saving him, the two investigated why the Ash Spawn were invading. Finding a letter proclaiming Carius' intentions to destroy them, Veleth was shocked yet suspicious on how Carius could still be alive after two centuries since Fort Frostmoth's destruction. Veleth sent the Dragonborn to attack Fort Frostmoth and kill the undead general. After they began their assault on the ruined fort, Carius summoned his Ash Spawn minions to kill the Dragonborn, declaring Fort Frostmoth would never fall. Fighting their way through Ash Spawn, the Dragonborn eventually unlocked the room Carius was trapped in and slew him, returning General Falx Carius to his rest.
