When our Imperial forces are ready to invade the great United States, I will awake the sleeping spirit! Then shall you see hellborn fang and fire unleashed upon our foes-- and you will doubt no more!
~ General Makimura to one of his aides about his plans for the frozen dragon.

General Makimura is the main antagonist of "Dragon By the Tail!", the nineteenth issue in the 1982-1985 comic book series The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones.

He is a deranged Japanese general who aspires to conquer the United States of America in the name of Imperial Japan. In 1936, Makimura comes up with using a frozen dragon in the incoming World War II and drive all foreigners from the Pacific Ocean, but his plans force him to come across Indiana Jones as he investigates about the frame-up that has gotten his friend Marcus Brody fired as curator of the National Museum.

History[]

General Makimura is a so-called "mystic" Imperial Japanese general who aspires to conquer the United States of America in name of the Imperial Japan's "mighty power". In 1936, Makimura is informed by Professor Kobayashi about the discovery of an ancient frozen dragon encased in ice by an expedition to the Himalayas. Whereas most of the military refuses to believe Kobayashi's claims, Makimura believes in them and comes up with employing the dragon, once defrosted, to ravage the United States of America, starting with the Californian coast, to invade and conquer it before the arrival of the incoming World War II. Horrified, Kobayashi refuses to look for the dragon, but Makimura anyways opts to send other men for what he refers to as "Operation Dragon".

Knowing that Makimura would seek for the powerful beast, Kobayashi warns about the find to the American archaeologist Indiana Jones, who saved his life two years prior, leading Indy to fly to Manaslu, Nepal to find the dragon before the Japanese, though such treasonous act to his country led Kobayashi to commit suicide through hara-kiri out of guilt for being a traitor, devastating his daughter. Unfortunately for Indy, Makimura and his forces have already retrieved the encased dragon and take it away in an Imperial blimp, but Makimura's soldiers shoot him and leave him for dead, unaware that Indy fooled them into believing he had fallen to his death as Makimura flies the beast back to Japan, but Indy is nursed back by the dragon's worshippers and given magic words that will make the creature return to his worshippers.

Weeks later, after Indy and Kobayashi's daughter team up to track down the dragon's location and save the USA, Indy finds Makimura using an underground laboratory below a sacred temple to house the dragon as they defrost him in a chamber of sleep vapor. Indy discreetly attacks the general's men and draws out the vapor of the chamber, waking the dragon up, who proceeds to break free from the chamber and attack all of the soldiers present. Makimura's men shoot at the beast, but it does not work, so Indy ties his whip to the dragon's head and makes it break out from the laboratory before summoning it back to its icy prison.

The last Makimura is seen is when one of his men calls him out for "playing with the supernatural", something that Makumura denies because Indy was the one who set the dragon up to escape, but his aide insists that they committed a sacred mistake as Indy barely stops the dragon from harming several children attending a festivity near there and the dragon's worshippers make sure the dragon is not misused for war effort. It is unknown if Makimura was executed for his careless actions or just severely reprimanded, and assuming he does make it into World War II, whether he survives that conflict or not.
