Villain Overview

If you think I won't shoot, you're in for a big surprise.
~ General Wade Eiling.

General Wade Eiling is a major antagonist in DC Comics, serving as the main antagonist of the Captain Atom comics.

He is a military tactician for the US Military who blackmails the accused Nathaniel Adam into participating in an atomic experiment, which in turn transformed Nathaniel into the nuclear-powered being known as Captain Atom. the effect resulted in Adam to disappear for eighteen years. deeming the test a complete failure alongside Megala, the project's main scientist. They would attempt the experiment again with a man named Clifford Zmack into another dangerously powerful and destructive energy being. The General then replicate his brain into the deceased supervillain Shaggy Man. He is also one of the two archenemies (alongside Major Force.) of Captain Atom.

Biography[]

Origin[]

During the eighteen years in which Adam is gone, Eiling marries his wife and acts as father to his two children. Eiling manipulates Captain Atom into serving the military. His first attempts, a chance for Adam to view his children in exchange for retrieving a lost submarine, falls apart. This embarrasses Eiling in front of his superiors. The same issue details the cover story for Captain Atom that Eiling helps create, one that is, in his words, "a scenario just far-fetched and hokey enough to sound authentic". Eiling would also form an intensely adversarial relationship with Megala.

Fall from Grace[]

When Eiling is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, he sends a military team to salvage the indestructible body of the first Shaggy Man from the Pacific Ocean. Green Lantern and Aquaman attempt to stop the Corps from retrieving the body, but their efforts are thwarted when Green Lantern's ring-generated protection is ultrasonically disrupted and Aquaman suffers a case of the bends.

The General returns to his base of operations, Threshold. From there he orchestrates a military assault on the Justice League. Answering a call for help in Phoenix, Arizona, the Justice League are attacked by American military forces. Spearheading the offensive is a new superhero team called the Ultramarine Corps. Recruited and genetically enhanced by Eiling's lab team, The Ultramarines already exhibit signs of terminal illness. Meanwhile, Batman, the Huntress and Plastic Man track Eiling to Threshold, where they discover that the general transferred his brain patterns into the indestructible body and took his own life. Eiling's personal computer reveals his military plans, the flawed Ultramarine Project, and the Shaggy Man brain transfer blueprints. Suddenly, Eiling emerges from an adjoining room and attacks.

The JLA battle the military and the Corps. Eiling's forces consider mutiny as doubts against attacking the League come to a head. Superman, whose super-senses have diagnosed the Ultramarine's disease, persuades the Ultramarine Corps that Eiling has used and betrayed them. The Corps members, who volunteered for service in good faith, switch sides and speed with the JLA toward Threshold.

Even against the combined might of the JLA and the Ultramarines, the General is unstoppable. Batman notices that Eiling's tactical edge and focus are diminished in his new artificial form. Working together, the team fights the monster onto a bulk-matter teleport platform. Eiling is transported to 433 Eros, a 'rocky needle', six miles in length, at the heart of the Sol system's asteroid belt.

Injustice Gang[]

He stays there for several months until Queen Bee recruits him into Lex Luthor's new Injustice Gang. Eiling battles against the Justice League a second time as part of a coordinated attack, this time utilizing a large-scale machine gun. At least once he declares that the League was wrong to banish him to the asteroid with no trial whatsoever. During the battle, Eiling almost bites off Steel's hand. The battle moves to one of the White Martian warships that is currently inside the Phantom Zone. There, Eiling states his plan to utilize the weapons of mass destruction on various Earth itself. Orion's war dog Sturmer participates in a trick against Eiling. The canine tackles the man through a ship's airlock, into the Phantom Zone, where Eiling is lost for some time.

Suicide Squad[]

Having somehow escaped, he has since appeared in the JSA comics fighting Hal Jordan. He is one of the hundreds of villains recruited into the Society. He is a participant in the Battle of Metropolis, the first step of the Society's war on the heroes. This effort fails. He now serves as a member of the Suicide Squad, which mainly consists of villains performing dangerous missions for the benefit of the U.S. Government.

The New 52[]

In The New 52 reboot, Captain Atom has a new origin with General Wade Eiling first appearing in a radiation suit while flanking Captain Atom. General Eiling tells Captain Atom to fall in line as he is a super-weapon that will keep America on the top. When Captain Atom tells them that he will be just another atomic bomb for them, General Eiling attempts to quarantine Captain Atom. While stating that he cannot eat or drink, Captain Atom counters everything that the military throws at him.

Powers & Abilities[]

Being a military general, Wade Eiling specializes in modern and advanced warfare. Once having access to weapons grade army science and engineering at his beck & call due to being a four star commanding officer in his U.S. special forces outfit. Making him an excellent and capable leader in and of his own right. Being a remarkably intelligent man and master strategist, as shown by his ability to plan and orchestrate wide-scale offensives against enemies the like of even the Justice League. Being an adept tactical specialist versed at analyzing a situation for what it is, taking advantage of almost any situation he finds himself in.

Having used this aspect of his taciturn planning & plotting to placate Nathaniel Adam for the Atom Project for his pursuit of the 'Green Elite's illicit practices, framing him for murdering a fellow officer under the hidden cabals purview at the time in order to strongarm the good captain into court martial to ensure his silence. As well as playing a fatally intoxicated superpowered militia called the Ultramarine Corp he had designed against the JLA in a dual to the death. All in a bid to use the very artificial meta-gene that was implemented in the military super soldier's creation in a successful bid of transference; implanting his consciousness into the body of an indestructible synthetic being known as the Shaggy Man. The very same entity which he had excavated from the deepest trench on earth after ordering his men under command to dispatch the creatures at then present guardians; i.e. Green Lantern & Aquaman.

Being a man of armed regiment upbringing, Gen. Eiling was very well versed in Military Protocol, having a thorough knowledge of all forms of standard operation procedure within the system he eventually grew through the ranks to oversee. As such he stood as an excellent marksmen with most every firearm he had on hand. Going so far to have bolts in a handgun magazine specially mantled using an X-Ionizer, the very same device invented by the Project: Atom's original overseer; Professor Heinrich Megala. To harvest the special cosmic alloy used to create its crowning achievements Captain Atom and Major Force, for the event of their potential revolt.

Even after his transformation into the General, having transplanted his essential id into the indestructible body of an unstoppable killing machine. Boasting an incredibly powerful physiology that compensated for its increased mass, strength and other unique capabilities. He more often than not made use of heavier caliber firearms of enormous size and power to match his increased bulk. Even without the higher grade artillery, Eiling now possessed enough raw might to engage multiple superpowered beings in close combat. His new body making him incredibly strong, capable of fighting any grade of meta-human, to a standstill. Even powerhouses such as Steel, Orion, Martian Manhunter and the likes of Superman. Easily able to uproot and destroy skyscrapers, battle entire teams of supers barehanded, fight another Shaggy Man in the vacuum of space, etc.

Being artificial in nature, The General boasts an adaptive & regenerative progressionary ability; making him resistant if not impervious to almost any form of attack. Able to withstand a combined attack from high-ranking superhumans, extreme temperatures, high pressures, and even the vacuum of space. Wade's new body constantly adapts to any assault made against him. After experiencing one form of attack, the artificial flesh & sinews learns and adjusts new resistance to it in the future; erstwhile as an added effect of which, nothing seems to slow the General down. His newfound abilities allow him to fight for days with no signs of exhaustion or fatigue.

Essentially enabling him to move and fight and react at peak capacity forever. Another added effect of the Shaggy Man body is that General Eiling can expediently regrow lost limbs or destroyed internal organs (even ones that were blown clean off or blasted apart by batman's explosive batarangs). This miraculous recovery ability is contributed to The Shaggy Man's added salamander regenerative tissues, enhanced using chemotherapeutic measures to supercharge its efficiency; this coupled with a largely subverted nervous system numbs pain reception considerably. Thus allowing Eiling to heal from any injury in a matter of moments and not suffer duress from such egregious injury detracting from his focusing on the mission at hand. To it, the body of the artificial life form Eiling is apart of no longer ages. Making him for all intents and purposes, immortal.

In lieu of his similarly enhanced physique, Wade's senses enabled him to smell the adrenaline in another man's sweat. Particularly during battle. Despite his impressive frame, the General was able to run, jump and move much faster than the finest human athlete. Eiling being surprisingly quick for a man of such size & mass. He was even able to surprise Superman of all people in how quick he was. Due to his functionally undying body; The Shaggy Man being a bio-engineered creature by nature. Eiling need not worry about food, water, rest or even sustainable atmosphere. Meaning he is essentially tireless without the need for nourishment and/or rejuvenation.

A similar villain named General Wade appears in the fifth season of the Gotham live-action series, portrayed by John Bedford Lloyd. General Wade first comes to Gotham City in the episode "I Am Bane", where he leads the U.S. Army in their mission to restore order after the "No Man's Land" event. However, General Wade is then captured by Bane and taken to the laboratory of Hugo Strange, where the Professor plants a mind-control device in the general's brain.
