General Yunan is a supporting character of the Disney Channel animated series Amphibia. She is a newt general who originally seeked to capture Captain Grime.
She was voiced by Zehra Fazal.
Appearance[]
Yunan is a tall pink newt with a slender body and white blond hair that protrudes from the back of his head. She has a more glossy belly and a longer tail with darker pink spots. Her eyes are yellow with thin black pupils when viewed closely. She wears Newtopian-issued armor, in silver, consisting of two intricately patterned shoulder straps, similar to the rest of his armor. Her cape represents the symbol of the Newtopia flag. Attached to her chest is a military crest, showing her general rank. Her armor has two long swords in each gauntlet. She also wears black high boots with white trim on top.
Personality[]
General Yunan is portrayed as psychotic, boastful, and determined. She has a habit of repeatedly speaking out herself proclaimed titles whenever she meets someone. Despite that, she is shown to have a sense of honor and knows the difference between right and wrong. She later helps Anne, the Plantars, and Marcy foil Sasha and Grime's coup and save Newtopia. Though loyal to King Andrias, she was shocked to learned that he was a ruthless tyrant who wanted to use the Calamity Box to take over the multiverse starting with Earth. She was then forced to remained loyal to him out of fear, however when she was assigned to round up some frogs to work in the factories that will drain all of Amphibia's natural resources that will turn Amphibia into a wasteland and terminate any frogs who resisted, Yunan finally decided to turn against him knowing that he is going too far, and she will never serve a tyrant like him. At first, Yunan didn't want to save Marcy as she saw humans as "scheming backstabbers", but later warms up to her.
Despite being courageous as she claims, she is shown to have a fear of Grubhogs because one almost bit her hand off when she was a little girl. Later, she even admits that she's usually not used to working together, but praises Marcy and Olivia for their success.
Biography[]
Season 2[]
General Yunan first appeared in "Toadcatcher" where she was sent to find and capture Captain Grime after he lost his entire army and was branded a traitor. She visits a frog bar where she asks where he is but no knows. She then learns from Grime's whereabouts which were unknowingly given to her by his only remaining soldiers Braddock and Percy. She finds both Grime and Sasha and chases them through the forest with her retractable razor-sharp armor claws. She is then defeated after being tricked by Sasha into saying her titles and gets pushed down a waterfall by Grime.
She reappears in "The First Temple", informing King Andrias about the uprising in the valley, the Toad Lords, and Captain Grime until she is dismissed after King Andrias gets word from Marcy about the temple.
She returns in season 2 finale "True Colors" when Anne, the Plantars, Marcy, Lady Olivia and Frobo were taken to the dungeon by the Toad Army, Yunan single-handedly taken down the army. She was about to introduce herself before Olivia interrupts her due to the current situation they were in. To stop the Toad Army's invasion of Newtopia, Hop Pop, Marcy and Olivia set Andrias free from the dungeon while Polly, Frobo and Yunan take down the soldiers and help Anne and Sprig close down the gates. After the Toad Army's invasion on Newtopia was thwarted, Sasha tries to warn Anne not to give the Calamity Box to King Andrias, but it was too late as Yunan shuts her mouth up and Anne is still angered and resentful so much that she ignored her warnings and immediately gave the box to him. Much to everyone's horror, Andrias reveals his true nature and intentions of conquering the entire multiverse with an iron fist. As result, she immediately redeems herself by fighting against the mad king along with the others.
Season 3[]
In "Turning Point", she and Lady Olivia had no choice but to remain to King Andrias, despite not wanting to be part of his plans to conquer the multiverse. She and Olivia were ordered to take the comatose Marcy to a rejuvenation tank in order to save her life. Unaware to them, King Andrias has plans for Marcy once she's fully healed.
In "Olivia and Yunan", which focuses on her and Lady Olivia, the duo continued serving Andrias out of fear even though they don't want to be part of his plans to conquer the multiverse and Earth. As King Andrias' robotic forces started building robotic factories and have turned the surrounding nature around Newtopia into a polluted wasteland, the duo was summoned by Andrias, she wanted to know what this was about. They noticed Andrias has isolated himself into his quarters, when they peek on him, they see him seemingly talking to himself (he was actually talking to his master about wanting to used Marcy as their host) about how things are professing and testing a device on someone, which Yunan found freaky. King Andrias invited her and Olivia in and has given them new assignments: Olivia is assigned to oversee the construction of their refineries as Andrias plans to drain all of Amphibia's natural resources and Yunan is ordered to round up some frogs to work in the factories and terminate any who resisted. When exiting, Yunan caught Olivia about wanting to get rid of Andrias, though at first, she was about to report her, but it turns out Yunan wants to be part of it. Yunan and Olivia know that Andrias is going too far, believing to lose his mind, the duo has decided to defect from him and save Amphibia.
The only problem is, Anne and the Plantars have been gone for weeks and not been heard since then, so Olivia decided to go free Marcy, Yunan is reluctant at first as she sees humans as "scheming backstabbers", however Olivia told her she still trusts Marcy, and if they free her, they can work on a plan to overthrow Andrias. Yunan informs Olivia that Marcy is in the basement except no one is allowed down there and Yunan has heard rumors that she is guarded by a horrifying monster, which surprised Olivia. After avoiding being seen by the Frobots, they arrived in Marcy's bedroom where Olivia revealed a doorway that leads to the basement, when in the basement they meet the Moss Man and Shadowfish who are revealed to be prisoners from other worlds that the previous rulers took prisoner. When confronted by the Moss Man, it was revealed to be friendly, Yunan took a flower from it as an offering of frienship and put it in her hair. They arrived at a door that had eight Amphibian figures with glowing eyes and there was one in the center, Olivia informed her it was where Marcy was being held and there will be no going back now.
As, they pushed the door open, they found Marcy still in the tank, they walk to it and Yunan climbed up and pulled her out of it. Then she and Olivia removed the tubes connected to her body and a mech suit that she's been placed in. She then removed the oxygen mask that caused her to cough, when Marcy woke from her coma, Yunan noticed that Marcy was out of state as she mistook the latter and Olivia as her friends: Sasha and Anne and then started being rough with her. Olivia stops her as she begins to comfort Marcy. Yunan told her they have leave because Andrias will find out that they saved her, she and Olivia carry Marcy because she was too weak to walk as she was in the tank for weeks.
However, before they can make their getaway, they seemingly found themselves outside which Olivia knows they couldn't be. She sees what appeared to be her late mother who is disappointed in Olivia for letting Amphibia become a wasteland and then turns into a pollution monster. Marcy despite being loopy, found out they were in a projection as in VR, Yunan was confused what VR is until Marcy explains it was not real. Suddenly, the VR summons a projection of a Grubhog which Yunan is afraid of, much to Marcy's surprise, Yunan explains that when she was a little girl, one of them bit her hand (as shown in a flashback and other kids laughing at her). More Grubhog projections appear, and they turn into monsters, despite Marcy telling her it's not real, she runs off.
As she was cornered, one of them disappeared and reappeared, she then discovered that the eyes on the wall were projecting their fears. Yunan, Olivia, and Marcy later destroy them all and they believed they won until Andrias appeared and stops them, telling the trio they have much to discuss. As he reveals they were being watched the whole time, The Core grabbed Marcy and strapped her to a chair. Yunan and Olivia demanded Andrias to stop whatever he was fixing to go to Marcy. Andrias explains the Core is a collection of Amphibia's greatest minds preserved for all eternity and by the Moss Man's healing abilities and the Shadowfish who conquer death.
Andrias reveals the reason why the Core wanted Marcy as their host, because Marcy was deemed the best, the smartest and the only one who can beat Andrias at flipwart. Despite that he likes her, he followed its command as Yunan and Olivia watch in horror and Andrias looks away as the Core began possessing Marcy. Yunan and Olivia were shocked, but all Yunan can do is give Andrias a hateful glare as he told her and Olivia the time has finally come for the Core to lead Amphibia to their destiny, he lets it explain as it woke fully possessing Marcy and then greeted them.
In "The Beginning of the End", Yunan and Olivia were captured and then forced to wear mind-controlled collars to serve Andrias and the Core now called Darcy. Anne, Sasha, the Plantars, Grime, and Frobo encounter them while searching for the Calamity Box and rescuing Marcy. Anne and Sasha defeated and freed both of them by using dance moves back from Earth. After being freed, Yunan and Olivia tried to warn the group that Marcy is under the Core's control, but end up being captured and thrown into the dungeon as Darcy and Andrias started their invasion on Earth.
In "All In", Anne and co. later escaped from Newtopia Castle thanks to one of Frobo's upgrades and she was surprised that they were on Earth. Alongside the Boonchuy parents and FBI, they agree to work together with them to defeat Darcy and King Andrias and stop them from conquering the multiverse. While Anne, the Plantars, the Boonchuy parents and the FBI are fighting against Andrias and his army, Sasha, Grime, Yunan and Olivia infiltrate the castle to defeat Darcy. While Sasha and Grime went to deal with Darcy by themselves, she and Olivia are facing the group of Cloak-Bots. After Darcy's defeat, she and Yunan are watching Anne and her friends reunite with each other. After they return to Amphibia, they were shocked to see the moon is going to crash into it.
In "The Hardest Thing", after the Core is destroyed and Anne is later revived, she and Olivia bids farewell to Marcy and thanks her for help them see what's important inside. She and the rest of the Amphibians are watching in tears when Anne and her friends went back to Earth. Nine months later, she and Olivia were married and both became dignitaries of newts. Both were thinking of living in Wartwood and starting a family together. They, alongside Grime, were seen attending the unveiling ceremony at Wartwood, which reveals the statue of Anne.
Trivia[]
- Her name is usually confused to be "Yunnan", possibly due to it being spelled that was in the captions as well as the Yunnan lake newt.
- Although Yunan's retractable hooked claws are so sharp that they can slice down things easily, they are not as durable and more brittle than Sasha's pink sword when the claws on Yunan's right glove shattered in half after constant clashes against Sasha's sword as seen in the episode "Toadcatcher".
- Her voice actress, Zehra Fazal, said she drew inspiration from characters such as Darkwing Duck for her performance as Yunan.
