Gengar is the main antagonist of the video games Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, and their Nintendo Switch remake Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

He is a human cursed by Ninetales into becoming a Gengar. As a Gengar, he becomes the leader of Team Meanies, a "rescue team" that uses their profit and status to gain wealth and power.

Biography[]

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team/Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX[]

Gengar was once a human with greedy desires. Trespassing into a sacred dungeon full of rare Pokémon, he attempted to grab a tail from a Ninetales. The Ninetales cursed the human, but his Gardevoir took the curse on behalf of her master. While the human cowardly fled, he transformed into a Gengar. At some time in the past, Gengar recruited a Medicham and Ekans to become his teammates and established Team Meanies.

Throughout the game, Gengar and his rookies torment the player and their partner through their journeys, starting a bitter rivalry between the player's team and Team Meanies. Gengar even attempts to manipulate Caterpie to join their team should they rescue Metapod from the Sinister Woods first. Despite the player's team reaching the end of the woods first, Team Meanies attack them but are defeated and the player's team rescues Metapod.

Later, Gengar eavesdrops on the player, partner, and Xatu at the Hill of the Ancients discussing the Ninetales legend. He would forsake this the following day by spreading rumors upon the Pokémon Square residents that the player was the human in the legend, making them responsible for the natural disasters threatening the world, sending them and the partner out of town. However, after traveling to Mt. Freeze to hear Ninetales tell the player that they were not the human from the legend, they return to Pokémon Square to confront Gengar's lies. He tries to protect his rumors with a lack of the player's evidence, only for Pelipper to deliver newspapers stating the player's innocence based on Team A.C.T. witnessing Ninetales telling the truth. Enraged by Gengar's trickery, the Pokémon angrily run Team Meanies out of Pokémon Square.

Following Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem's defeat in the Magma Cavern, Gengar shows up and mocks the rescue teams that they have no chance of rescuing Team A.C.T. from Groudon. His words spread fear among the crowd until the partner encourages everyone to not give up. Gengar angrily walks off and attempts to hack his way into the player's dream following their triumphant over Groudon. Gengar uses Dream Eater to expose the player for who they are, only for Gardevoir's light to stop him, with Gengar recognizing who she was. Gardevoir tells Gengar that even with all the evil actions he committed, she always forgave him as he was her master. Heartbroken, Gengar tearfully leaves the player's dream.

Remorseful for his actions, Gengar helps the player and their partner behind the scenes when they reach Sky Tower to stop the falling star, first by helping Alakazam and Xatu create the Teleport Gem to teleport the party to the Sky Tower. After the player convinces Rayquaza to destroy the meteor, they and their partner are seemingly killed by the explosion. Gengar saves them by grabbing their spirits and dragging them down to the surface level under the pretense of taking them to the underworld, getting lost, and ditching them.

During the post-game, after the player clears the Stormy Sea and rescues Medicham from the Wish Cave, Gengar asks the player to escort him to Mt. Freeze so he could atone for his actions. Meeting Ninetales, she reveals it was his own selfish desires that cursed him into a Pokémon. She gives them the 9-Tail Crest and directs him to the Murky Cave where he might be able to save Gardevoir.

At the end of the Murky Cave, Gengar and the player meet the "judge of darkness" who evaluates Gengar for his sins. After rendering his judgment, the judge states that it was impossible to lift Gardevoir's curse and leaves. Desperate, Gengar breaks the seal immobilizing him and beckons for Gardevoir's life. He admits to abandoning Gardevoir to be cursed and only through visiting the player's dreams did he discover that she always forgave him. Suddenly, the curse is broken and Gardevoir's physical form is released, with Ninetales appearing to say that gratitude was the true key to break the curse. She tells him that Gardevoir's memory will be erased, but Gengar admits Gardevoir being freed from her curse was enough for him.

Once they arrive back at the player's team base, Gengar awards the player with a Mobile Scarf. Before departing, an amnesiac Gardevoir asks for Gengar's name, to which he introduces himself to her.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon[]

Gengar appears in one mission where he requests the player to deliver a letter to Banette. Because he is connected to Gardevoir in the Connection Orb, he might be the same Gengar from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team.

Trivia[]

  • While Gengar is escorted through Mt. Freeze and Murky Cave, his moveset consists of Leer, Scratch, Quick Attack, and Taunt, which are moves that Gengar cannot normally learn in the main games aside from Taunt. The remake instead gives him the moveset Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Shadow Ball, and Sucker Punch, which Gengar can learn in the main games.
