The first century or two I spent imprisoned in that lantern, I behaved as a veritable toady, granting freely everyone’s wishes. Then I asked of myself, what get I out of this? Others use me for their selfish ends, and I come away with naught. Right then I made a vow. No more Mister Pleasant Fellow. From then on it became watch out for old Roman numeral one.
~ The genie's confession.

The Genie (real name unknown) is the main antagonist of the Gary K. Wolf novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit?. The genie is a toon-summoned deity fed up with granted wishes due to his curse, to the point he kills whoever summons him, including Roger Rabbit.

Biography[]

I decided the next time I came out I would stay out forever. And that be precisely what I intend to do. If thou thinkest I wilt go back inside that lantern, thou art nutty.
~ The genie.

Little is revealed about the genie's history. According to legend, he was imprisoned eternally in the lantern as a curse by a rivaling wizard during the Persian age. He can only be summoned by toons with the phrase "May your dreams come true", but his wishes never last forever. Rigging his wishes to have a time limit wasn't enough for the genie's hatred of his curse, so he started killing the toons that summoned him. He started by drowning the accomplice of a toon fence after the lantern was pulled up from the seam, having been sealed in an oil drum trapped in a shipwreck. He then granted the wishes of Rocco and Dominick DeGreasy, who wished to be human and financially successful. But when Roger Rabbit wanted to get back at the studio casting him for a small Alice in Wonderland part, he stole the lantern, assuming it was a tea kettle and using it accordingly. The DeGreasys realized what it was when Roger sang his favorite song, When You Wish Upon a Star, which ended with the incantation. The genie was summoned when Roger was out of the room, and when hearing what Roger wanted, the genie bought time by giving Roger a marriage to Jessica Rabbit and a contract at DeGreasys.

When the wishes were granted, only to slowly end, the DeGreasys knew he had the lantern. Needing to compensate for their own lost wishes, they tried to buy it back, but Roger refused. Jessica wanted the lantern as well, but she could never get close enough to use it, especially when refusing to return to Roger. When Jessica finally went to Roger's apartment to blackmail him with his recent killing of Rocco, Roger sang "When You Wish Upon a Star" again in a failed attempt to woo her. When she was out of the living area, the genie reappeared, revealing what he did with Roger's life and shooting him dead. The genie hopped out of the house, and Jessica fled shortly thereafter while avoiding tripping the burglary alarm. The kettle was retrieved from Carol Masters, and Dominick tried to get the genie to give him what he wanted, but the genie shot him as well. The genie held Eddie Valiant, the private eye on Roger's case, at gunpoint and confessed to everything. They got into fisticuffs, and then when Valiant saw the agency had a saltwater tank, he planned to drown the lantern in it, as saltwater killed the genie. He threatened the genie into giving a fake suicide note by Dominick to exonerate Roger of murder, then killed the genie anyway, leaving him screaming until he evaporated.
