~ Gensei Kihara to Misaki Shokuhou |
Gensei Kihara is a major antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise, serving as the main antagonist of A Certain Scientific Railgun. He serves as the overarching antagonist of the Level Upper Arc and the Poltergeist Arc, a major antagonist in the Silent Party Arc, the main antagonist of the Daihasei Festival Arc (in Railgun).
He is one of the most valued researchers of Academy City and an important member of the Kihara family. Though famous and influential in many circles, his expertise is on neuroscience, and he's focused on developing the power of the human mind. His obsession is achieving SYSTEM by creating a Level 6 Esper, and he has no qualms with using his own family members like his granddaughter Therestina as guinea pigs or with risking his own life for his research. He was the former boss of Harumi Kiyama during their experiment with Child Errors in the Advanced Education Department which left Harumi's class in a coma. He is the arch-nemesis of Misaki Shokuhou and Mikoto Misaka.
He is voiced by Binbin Takaoka in Japanese and Charlie Campbell in English.
Appearance[]
Gensei is an elderly man of average height though he seems to have a hunch. His most notable feature is that he often has his eyes closed, only rarely opening them when he is excited, as well as a birthmark that can be found on his right temple. Gensei is currently the oldest Kihara introduced in the series, only rivaled by Noukan Kihara.
Personality[]
As typical of a Kihara, Gensei is an extremely twisted and cruel individual who is devoted to pushing the boundaries of science and the advancement of scientific research, regardless of who gets hurt in the process. Most of the time, Gensei can get easily distracted by things that catch his interest. He fits the role of a stereotypical mad scientist archetype.
He displays an almost uncanny and blatant disregard for all human life in general and is willing to kill anyone who for the sake of his research. He even gleefully let his own family members volunteer themselves for his experiments. He thinks nothing of destroying an entire city just to see how it would happen, has sent children into comas for flimsy reasons and was behind a project to murder ten thousand clones. Gensei also shows no regard for his own life as well, as he admits that he gets so excited about his experiments that he's almost died several times due to not minding his surroundings hence his artificial limbs.
Furthermore, Gensei's disregard for all life in general has put him at odds with Heaven Canceller and his belief in the Hippocratic Oath. Having spent a majority of his life in the Dark Side of Academy City, Gensei is quite analytical and is very sensitive to people plotting something. He can see through people's deceptions through their mannerisms, such as Misaki still having "a glint of hope" in her eye. As such, he was wary of her leading him to a trap.

Abilities[]
- Multi-Skill: Having been the one to teach Harumi Kiyama about brainwave tuning, Gensei can use Multi-Skill after he created his own Level Upper Network by kidnapping espers in order to obtain a collection of powers for his plans. He has admitted that his network is smaller than the one Harumi made.
- Mental Out: Through having tuned Exterior to his own brainwaves, Gensei can use Misaki Shokuhou's esper ability without registering as a user of Exterior. Like her, Gensei carries several controllers to aim and use the versatile mental power and can block other mind-control espers. However, he lacks the limiter release code and thus can't access the boosted version of her ability.
- Clairvoyance: Clairvoyance is an esper ability that allows its user to see through any physical obstacle. However, using it makes it harder to grasp things like distance and direction.
- Aero Shooter: An esper ability that controls air, it allows Gensei to alter the trajectory of flames, suffocate people, compress air to create footholds and send bursts of air as an attack.
- Ice Beam: Gensei can fire a small beam that produces ice on the point of impact.
- Unknown ability used to create circular holes in reinforced shutters and walls.
- Unknown ability to resist electrical shocks.
- Cyborg Prosthetics: Due to his aforementioned bad habit, Gensei has been in a number of accidents that have almost killed him. According to him, his body is practically a trade fair for prosthetic technology, as shown when he detached the hand that had been caught in one of Misaki's traps.
Trivia[]
- Genshi's name (幻生) literally means "Illusory Life", and maybe a reference not appearing at all in the series in the current year of the timeline. Using other characters (原生), it can be translated as "Primitive" or "Primeval", referring to his age. Furthermore, his name is used interchangeably with "Tensei", meaning Reincarnation.
