Biography[]

In 19th century England, Gentleman James Craddock was a notorious highwayman who desired immortality. He entered into a deal with Astaroth, a demonic entity of likewise malevolence, where he agreed to collect the souls of multiple people to become immortal. Craddock went on a crime spree by ambushing people and taking their souls from their bodies which would turn the victim's bodies into decrepit shells of their former selves left in perpetual pain. Having done this to at least nine people, Craddock was able to take the soul of Sherlock Holmes. Eager to become immortal, Craddock intended to give the souls of the individuals over to Astaroth. Batman, who traveled back in time, warned Craddock to not go through with Astaroth's deal as it was a trap. But Craddock refused to listen. After a major battle where Craddock and Astaroth are bested and the souls are released from Craddock's possession and returned to their bodies, Craddock became a ghost through Astaroth's machination and wanted revenge against Batman.

Centuries later, Craddock as the Gentleman Ghost would commit crimes where he would get apprehended by Batman and arrested. At one point, he caught the attention of Batman and Elastic Man during one of his crimes when he stole a lot of money. Batman and Fire fought against him until he was defeated by Batman and detained.

At one point, the Gentleman Ghost broke out of prison to continue another crime spree. He manages to overpower Batman, place him in a booby trap coffin, and bury him alive. With his dark magic, Gentleman Ghost raised an army of skeletons in an attempt to decimate all of London. Despite his body being trapped in the coffin, Batman is able to allow his spirit to separate from his body and ally with Deadman to try and stop Gentleman Ghost. Batman and Deadman along with the assistance of Green Arrow and Speedy fight against Gentleman Ghost and his undead army. But when Gentleman Ghost breaks the artifact used to control his army, the army turned against him and dragged him to the underworld. Batman tried to save him when he begged him for his help, but he was still dragged away by them. In addition, Batman was also rescued from the coffin.

Gentleman Ghost would appear across multiple episodes assisting other villains in their common plight to kill the Batman. Gentleman Ghost would ally with Black Manta, the Clock King, the Brain, and others to help Owlman in his plan against Batman until they were all defeated and arrested. Gentleman Ghost would also appear and participate in Mongul's racing game where he lost the competition. Gentleman Ghost would also appear with other supervillains during a gathering hosted by the Joker where they Jeffrey Ross told jokes to make fun of Batman for the supervillains' entertainment. However, Batman broke out of his trap to attack and defeat the villains.
