Dr Geoff Ernstmann is the main antagonist of the indie analog horror series Angel Engine.
A brilliant yet morally corrupt scientist, he leads the Angel Engine Initiative, a project that harnesses the divine energy of an imprisoned angel Uriel to power artificial miracles and restore their broken world.
His project is located in the Negev Desert, Israel, within the Second Tower of Babel. The tower houses over 200,000 workers who are responsible for developing state of the art technology for the future of mankind, while conducting cruel experiments not only on the angel but on other human test subjects.
Appearance[]
Geoff Ernstmann is a middle aged man with medium length brown hair and beard. He often dresses professionally, wearing either his lab coat or a suit. During his time of fame, he would also wear extravagant outfits alongside other celebrities. He is often depicted in religious themes in magazines.
Biography[]
Geoff Ernstmann was born in January 19th, 1992 in Bolzano, Italy. He first burst onto the scene of the scientific community in his early 20s, when he became the youngest ever recipient of a Nobel Prize in chemistry at the age of 25. Despite promises to bring this world into the future, he failed to reconnect to his previous success, and fell into obscurity.
It wasn't until nearly two decades that he would receive a vision from a messenger, a being who had traversed the gulf in time with the instructions to create a machine. With the being's knowledge, Ernstmann reemerged with the greatest invention in the history of mankind, a miracle machine that could turn your every wish into reality. In the months following this announcement, Ernstmann seemed to be the subject of every international headline. Within a matter of days, the once forgotten genius had been transformed into the most famous man on the planet. However, not everything was as it seemed, and the newfound success came now without its fair share of negative repercussions.
Once it was revealed that "Angel Engine" as the doctor had dubbed his new invention, was using a real, sentient angel named Uriel, caged within its machine to make its miracles possible, many began to criticize the project. Some began to raise moral and ethical questions, while others started discrediting the doctor's work, stating the angel would be the only reason for his success. In response to this, Ernstmann announced a new invention during an interview at the Barry Donovan Show, one that would have no need for the angel. On the day of the reveal, however, Ernstmann was attacked in Solomon Hall, located in Beersheba, Israel. He died from his injuries on March 28th, 2033. After his death, he is depicted being dragged away by a faceless monster, its body made up of screaming faces. Ernstmann's own face is hollowed out, suggesting him being now being under the influence of demons. A month later, Ernstmann returned during the unveiling of his creation. His resurrection shocked the world, even pushing his own killer to ending his own life in prison. The reborn doctor revealed to the world his new invention, an artificial angel named Barachiel.
Despite his return, he grew mentally unstable, suffering the consequences of his sins. Lashing out on his colleagues and friends, he eventually went missing, and the entire Angel Engine Initiative is panicking at the disappearance of their director, going on global searches to find him under Operation John's Vision. Unrest grew in the world until conflict broke out. Nuclear armageddon destroyed the land, ending the world as everyone knew it.
Even so, Dr Ernstmann remained, becoming the very messenger who had started this tale. He became a false god for civilization for the next two thousand years.
Personality[]
Geoff Erstmann does not have a sense of empathy or feel remorse for his actions, believing the ends justify the means. He views the imprisonment and torture of the angel as a necessary act for humanity's survival, dismissing the angel's pleas for mercy with cold indifference. He is very manipulative and cruel, tricking people into volunteering for human experiments in exchange for false promises of a better future. Despite his claim of doing this for the sake of scientific progress, it is undeniable that his narcissism and lust for fame are a motivating factor. He appears in many magazines and makes appearances on TV. He could even be said to have a god-complex, saying "I am who I am" and being depicted with religious themes in magazines and media.
Despite his revival and fame, his mental health deteriorates after his resurrection. Being influenced by the faceless demon, he bleeds for the angel engine to feed its hunger. He eventually lashes out during an interview with Barry Donovan, driven into a state of rage when he is asked what it was like to be dead. He orders his angel to destroy the cameras. When confronted by his friend and spokesman, Steven Ecklebloom, Geoff expresses lamentation, aware that his soul is damned and that his eternal rest is no more. Even so, he continues to run the Angel Engine Initiative, creating even more inventions, such as the Angel Corps. But as he continued his work he grew tired of the ads and contracts he had to fulfill, getting into heated arguments with Steven Ecklebloom. The burden of his position and the curse on him grew too much, prompting him to leave.
