~ Admiral Latimer betraying General Hawk. |
Admiral George Latimer is a minor antagonist from the original G.I. Joe series and the main antagonist of the episode "Sink the Montana!". He is the captain of the ship USS Montana who joins COBRA to prevent it from entering the junkyard.
He was voiced by Frank Welker, who also voiced Torch in the series.
History[]
Admiral Latimer commanded the USS Montana, the largest battleship in the world, and attributed it for lives saved during wartime, as it once had for him. As a result, he became highly dedicated to keeping the ship at all costs. His devotion came into conflict when it was decided that the USS Montana, after three wars and 45 years of active sea duty, would be decommissioned and scrapped. Latimer saw this as an end to his career, although his old friend Hawk tried to reassure him that it was not the case and in fact an honor to him and the Montana. Cobra took advantage of Latimer's devotion; a force of B.A.T.S. led by Destro seized the ship. Destro persuaded Latimer to join Cobra, which Latimer accepted if it meant he could keep his ship, thus betraying Hawk. As a demonstration of his loyalty, Destro had Latimer order the B.A.T.S. to open fire on the decommissioned warships, destroying several battleships and aircraft carriers. Under Destro's orders, Latimer then headed for Norfolk, Virginia to sink the Seventh Fleet.
Sometime later, Destro provides Latimer with a Cobra naval uniform. Latimer angrily tells Destro he has not provided defenses to protect the ship from a G.I. Joe attack, but Cobra soon arrives and places a special device called the "Pulse Modulator" to the ship for this purpose. As Latimer expresses his doubts concerning it, Hawk contacts him and gives him a last chance to surrender, telling him G.I. Joe will launch an attack on the USS Montana if he does not. Destro convinces Latimer that surrendering would mean he goes to prison and the USS Montana would be scrapped, so Latimer refuses to give in. Destro tells Latimer he made the right choice, but Latimer bitterly replies he ran out of choices when he joined Cobra.
During G.I. Joe's attack on the USS Montana, the Joes destroy the Modulator. Then, Destro programs the automatic firing control to attack the Fleet, but Latimer insists they have lost and should surrender. However, Destro tells Latimer only he has lost, punches him out and places the system on lockdown, before escaping through a Trubble Bubble. Latimer attempts to override the controls, to no avail. Latimer then leads the Joes to destroy the auxiliary fire control to shut it down. After exchanging fire with B.A.T.S., they successfully destroy the AFC. As the Fleet bombards the Montana, the Joes abandon the ship and swim to the USS Constitution (which they borrowed). Latimer decides to go down with his ship, but Hawk punches him out and jumps off the ship with Latimer. As Hawk swims to safety with Latimer in his grasp, Latimer tells him it would have been more merciful to let him drown. On the Constitution, Latimer's eyes fill with tears as he and the Joes watch the USS Montana sink. When Shipwreck asks Hawk how Latimer will be punished, Hawk says he does not know but that Latimer has already received the "worst punishment imaginable": losing his ship.
