Railways are no good, turn them into roads!
~ George's catchphrase

George the Steamroller is a supporting antagonist in the Thomas & Friends franchise and the main antagonist of the 2002 home media release Races, Rescues and Runaways. He is an ill-tempered steamroller who hates the railways and seeks to destroy them.

Appearance[]

In the Railway book series, George is green vintage steamroller with black and red accents alongside gray and green wheels and has a green face. In the television series, George has a pale gray face like the other characters but looks the same everywhere else.

Personality[]

George is a mean, rude, grumpy, bad-tempered, arrogant, selfish, ego-centric and cynical steamroller who wants railways to be replaced with roads. He also hates being ignored.

However, when he was sent away as a result of his actions at the end of ''Bye George'' he happily hoped that he wouldn't be as rude when he returned. As of the Thomas & Friends television special Calling all Engines, George, despite not speaking, looked friendly at Thomas when he hauled him to help fix the cracked airport road so the plane can land. This likely means he has a good side on him and hinting he may be on good terms with the engines in some form and can be considered an anti-hero.

Biography[]

Television series[]

He first appears in the Season 4 episode "Steamroller", where he develops a rivalry with Sir Handel. They later chase each other which results in a railway accident, eventually having him taken away.

He returns in the Season 5 episode "Lady Hatt's Birthday", where his driver is shown to be friendly to Sir Topham Hatt and offers him a lift. George has an accident due to an oil leak, which results in him crashing into the side of a swamp. Later the same season in the episode "Bye George!", he returns as the main antagonist. He is first shown teasing Skarloey and Rheneas at the Sodor Boulder Quarry, until Percy is brought to take him away. By the windmill, Percy brings George there to build a new crossing, but George instead just destroys the rails and replaces it with roads, causing Thomas to crash into a henhouse. George is eventually punished by Sir Topham Hatt, who puts him on a week-long timeout.

Television specials[]

George appears in the 2005 special Calling All Engines! and 2008 special The Great Discovery.

Trivia[]

  • George was to originally scripted to appear in the feature film Thomas and the Magic Railroad as a henchman of Diesel 10, but his model was never brought to Canada for filming and as a result he was scrapped from the film. George's role in the film would involve him destroying the buffers on Sodor to find the ones that led to the Magic Railroad, and in return, he could destroy the Tidmouth Sheds turntable and make it into a roller rink. However, George later switched sides, redeemed himself and stopped Splatter and Dodge.
  • George was meant to return in the animated spin-off series but was scrapped.
  • It is possible George was friends with Bulgy.
