“ | Commander Pixis. The Garrison and the Survey Corps have much in common. They both risk their lives together on the front lines. You two seem to have built a close relationship. But surely... you do not share this man's treasonous intent? | „ |
~ Gerald questioning Pixis' intentions. |
Gerald is an antagonist of the manga and anime series, Attack on Titan. He is one of the four main members of the Royal Government of The Walls. Acting as a representative for the military. He, along with the other noble families are immune to the Founding Titan's powers, due to not being Subjects of Ymir. Allowing them to work with the royal family and protect the secrets within the Walls, however, Gerald was eventually imprisoned by the military after the coup d'etat.
Appearance[]
Gerald appears to be a tall man whose age is somewhere in his 40s. He has short dark blonde hair which is shaved on the sides and kept in a bowl cut. He has a long face with a lengthy jawline, clear cheekbones, a cleft chin, and brown eyes. He also has a long and thin mustache.
Gerald wore the standard high-ranking military dress uniform. An olive-green trench coat, featuring the symbol of the Eldian military, which is a grey shield emblem with a white cross-like figure. He also wore a red bolo tie, similarly to Darius Zackly.
Personality[]
Gerald is a cruel man who only looks after his own self-interests, never once caring for the needs of the general population. As Gerald and his fellow council members cared no more than keeping themselves in power by any means necessary. Gerald was fully willing to disband the Survey Corps under a false deceit that they killed Dimo Reeves, while it was Gerald and his comrades who were responsible for it. Gerald’s lack of altruism was furthermore shown when Dot Pixis claims that humans killing each other is foolish, as he jokingly states that the Titans would go hungry. Gerald simply laughs it off without displaying any care for what Pixis meant.
Story[]
Past[]
Like all the other members of the uppermost nobility class living inside the Interior of the Walls (the innermost area in the center within Wall Sina), Gerald's ancestors were not Subjects of Ymir, and maybe not even Eldians in the first place. While Annie suggests they might have been different races of Eldians, the ancestors of these noble bloodlines might have come from other nations. For examples, some of them allied with the Eldian Empire during their reign over the world, while others might have been servants who were freed and made into rulers of the Walls. During the fall of the empire and the conflict known as the Great Titan War, Gerald's ancestors were one of the families given authority over the Walls by Karl Reiss, the First King of humanity within the Walls. As the people of the Interior did not mix with the rest of the population, Gerald being born as a normal human without having any of Ymir Fritz’s blood in him, makes Gerald unable to harness any Titan powers, nor does he have any connection with Ymir's soul and the Paths. But this was at his birth already an advantage, because Gerald and the other nobles were incapable of being controlled by the Founding Titan who held the power to alter the minds and bodies of all Subjects of Ymir.
Gerald was born on May 27th in an unknown year, he presumably came from one of the most prominent noble families inside Paradis Island. At some point in his life, Gerald became a high-ranking official within the Military, although it’s unknown if he had to complete the three-year training program like all the other trainees. Or if he simply acts as an archetypal figure for the military as a whole. Later in his adulthood, Gerald became one of the four main members from the Royal Government's assembly, a confidential council for only the most secret officials of the monarchy, including the important noble families and the figurehead king(s) who act on the behalf of the true royal family, the Reiss family's. Under the Reiss kings, Gerald would be responsible for making the many critical decisions in regards to the politics within the Walls, while also having extended influence over the Military.
During the time in which the story's takes place, the current fake king, who is meant to be the ruler of the assembly and publicly acts as the ruler on King Reiss' behalf. Has gotten too old to show any kind of care nor attention to his work as a figurative ruler, also having turned senile due to his age, making him unable to communicate with his fellow council members. Despite this, Gerald, Aurille, Deltoff, and Roderich do the speaking on the King’s behalf and control the rest of the government leaders, the chancellery, all the armed nobility and regional lords of the Walls, the military, the wealthy citizens, and the common folk. But all monarchy's administration is controlled and governed by Rod Reiss, officially just another regional lord from northern Wall Rose and controlled the politics since the death of Uri, having guided his eldest daughter Frieda during her rule.
Gerald is seen to have served at least Uri Reiss, Frieda Reiss and Rod Reiss, and would along with his other colleagues and the deepest members of the Military Police's First Interior Squad praying for God's eternal peace within the Walls. Together with the other ruling families, Gerald knows secrets about the Walls' society and history, and owns secret technology that is kept hidden from the public to avoid development within the Walls.
Gerald and his fellow assembly members know that the Walls are entirely built with the hardening of huge Colossal Titans, knowing that Titan sifters exist and that they are inherited through spinal fluid consumption.
By the time the serial killer Kenny Ackerman was employed by Uri as a government enforcer and member of Mitras' Military Police, Gerald was already a member of the royal assembly. His family, the Reiss family, and the other four noble families ruling the population are also involved with the Church and pass the secrets of the Titans and the real royal bloodline of Reiss to the most trusted and loyal Pastors.
Despite having large responsibilities to the people inside the Walls, Gerald, like his other three assembly members would repeatedly misuse his governance to keep himself and the rest of the ruling nobility at a privileged position. Exploiting his powers to benefit himself caused a large gap between poor and rich, but the Military Police, including the secret Interior Police. Made sure to kill off any possible opposition against the royal government and the monarchy. The idea of revolutions would successfully be a faraway concept, as most commoners never noticed that they aren't being treated in the best of ways. Gerald and his comrades dappling in subterfuge would continue for many years to come and found its peak at the year 846.
