Gerald is the deuteragonist of the Inside No. 9 episode "A Quiet Night In". He was a wealthy man living with his estranged wife Sabrina before ultimately killing her after their relationship hit rock bottom and couldn't be saved.

He was portrayed by Denis Lawson.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Before the events of the episode Gerald met, fell in love with and married a transgender woman named Sabrina, while the two appeared happily married, something happened over the course of their time together which strained their relationship to the point that when the episode began they were no longer on speaking terms.

A Quiet Night In[]

Gerald first appears when he comes into the dining room to enjoy a bowl of soup prepared for him by his house maiden while reading the paper. Unbeknownst to him Ray & Eddie are currently attempting to break in through his back door in order to steal the off-white painting on display in the dining room. When he finishes his soup Gerald heads to sit down on the neighbouring living room couch while Ray is attempting to sneak up behind him in order to chloroform him, Ray fails however thanks to Eddie constantly texting him, the noise of which makes Gerald mildly suspicious before he brushes it off and heads to the toilet. While in there Ray and Eddie try to figure out how long he will be and determine they have a good amount of time since he's audibly defecating.

The two make their way to steal the painting and Gerald returns later on to sit next to Sabrina on the sofa, with him eventually growing frustrated over her instance on watching EastEnders and turning it up so loud that it overpowers his music. The fight amuses Ray and Eddie as the two are quarrelling childishly before eventually Gerald gets the upper hand and drops the controller's batteries into Sabrina's drink leaving her to walk off angrily. He follows soon after and the two find themselves in the garden arguing, culminating in Sabrina handing Gerald her phone only for him to hear news which devastates him, presumably over something to do with their relationship now having hit rock bottom, which is virtually confirmed when Sabrina retreats upstairs to pack her belongings.

Gerald mopes around the living room before opening a drawer to reveal a pistol before he heads into the garden. He loads the gun and resides to attempting to kill himself but quickly turns away from the idea, he then looks at a photo of he and Sabrina mournfully. He is then reunited with her in the living room and the two share an emotional dance which ends with Gerald lowering Sabrina onto the sofa and preparing to kiss her before she turns away abruptly, finally pushing him over the edge. Gerald in a fit of rage puts a pillow over Sabrina's face and shoots her with his pistol, killing her instantly. He is almost immediately remorseful for this act, crying over her body before hearing the doorbell ring. He answers the door to find a "deaf and dumb" man named Paul selling cleaning products. He tells him to wait at the door for a minute and throws the remainder of his tomato soup over the sofa in order to cover up Sabrina's blood and make what happened look like an accidental spillage. He also tries to stash Sabrina in the coat cupboard but finds the maiden in there instead much to his confusion and hides it elsewhere. Paul enters and agrees to clean up the couch for him and Gerald expresses his gratefulness towards this before noticing some bin bags and asking if he could use those as well to which Paul accepts.

Gerald then stashes Sabrina's corpse in one of the bags and returns to find a confused Paul trying to tell him that a suitcase is lowering from outside in the garden, leaving a confused Gerald to go out and investigate only to find Ray and Eddie trying to lower Sabrina's suitcase via a clothesline, his confusion is short lived however as Ray and Eddie accidentally drop the line on top of Gerald killing him.

Ray and Eddie are then killed by Paul who reveals himself to be a fellow thief by calling either his boss or accomplice to tell him how easy it was to obtain the painting, not realising that it had been switched out by Ray and Eddie beforehand.

Personality[]

Not much is known about Gerald as is the case with most characters in this particular episode of the series however he is presented clearly as an insecure man in a loveless marriage who is mentally unstable. Although he does appear to love Sabrina their relationship is obviously strained for unknown reasons and he goes as far to kill her when their relationship hits rock bottom.

He is also hinted towards as being suicidal as he considered shooting himself before ultimately electing to kill Sabrina instead.

Appearance[]

Gerald is an elderly man with striking features who has short, neatly kept white hair, fair skin and dark eyes. He is a relatively skinny and small man who is depicted throughout the episode in his nightwear; an elegant paisley designed dressing gown blue pyjamas and slippers.
