~ Commonly heard from the German soldiers. |
The German Army are the overarching antagonists in the 2023 survival horror game Amnesia: The Bunker.
With the game taking place during World War 1, the Germans are the opponents of the French battalion that Henri Clément fights for. Despite being encountered only a few times, the Germans are the catalysts for the game's plot.
The soldiers are all voiced by Marek Oravec. The German prisoner, Karl Springer, is voiced by Branko Tomovic.
Appearance[]

Given that the game takes place in the middle of the first World War, the German Army is obviously seen in standard military attire. The German Army's clothes are exactly that of the uniform that was worn in real life during those times, which were dark green outfits, in contrast to the French Army's light blue outfits in-game, which was also the French Army's uniform in real life.
Most likely due to the fact that any Germans are not seen up close, the same model is used for all of them. Their faces are somewhat generic but with a thick mustache. As there is some distance between German soldiers and the player, these features are not easily seen.
History[]
Even though the game's events are based on real life, any details on the German Army's occupation of France and any events surrounding that are not greatly expanded upon within the game. If going by real world events, it is likely that German's presence began with the invasion of Belgium and Luxembourg starting in 1914, and continued to move in from there, with the intention of gaining France's industrial regions.
Events of Amnesia: The Bunker[]
In 1916, a French soldier by the name of Henri Clément - the main protagonist of the game - was taking refuge in a trench to avoid fire from a brutal German assault. He then encounters four German soldiers firing at him on a trench bridge in front of him. With the help of his best friend and fellow soldier, Augustin Lambert, Henri fights them off.
The Germans are not seen again for the remainder of the game, as the game takes place in an enclosed French bunker. Henri does, however, come across a tied-up German prisoner, Karl Springer, in the bunker's prison with a bag over his head. He was captured some time before the events of the game. Henri never socially interacts with him. The cell he's in contains much-needed bolt cutters to make progress, but the cell is closed off.
Once his cell is open, it will attract the attention of the Beast that plagues the bunker. Henri can kill the prisoner himself, let the Beast kill him, or find a way to distract the Beast and spare the prisoner. Although if he's spared, he will remain imprisoned and likely starved to death, as the bunker's entrance is never re-opened.
During a showdown with the Beast, Henri finally manages to get back outside, albeit in No Man's Land. He falls deep into a water-filled ditch covered with corpses. Henri hears a German patrol closing in on his position, and the game then ends. The interaction with the German patrol and Henri is left ambiguous. If the Beast escapes during the ending, it can be assumed that it killed anyone it came across, including more German soldiers, due to the Beast's mindlessly hostile and barbaric nature.
Trivia[]
- The German soldiers are the first enemies in the Amnesia series to be fully human with no mutations, as well as the first that can be directly killed with the use of weapons. In this case, a firearm.
- The Suitors in Amnesia: Justine are also human, but have been heavily tortured and mutilated beyond the point of recognition, so that they no longer retained their previous appearance, making them all look the same.
- The rifle the German soldiers are seen using is based on the Gewehr 98. Although the soldiers can drop the weapon after being killed, it cannot be picked up or used by the player.
