The Gerousia (in Japanese: ジェルーシア, Jerūshia), also known as the Elders of Sparta, are minor antagonists in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.
They are the overarching antagonists of Leonidas’ Flashback during the Ninth Round and supporting characters in the Ninth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.
The Gerousia are the council of elders of Sparta, those who make decisions and to whom even the Kings of Sparta must ultimately submit. Due to their stubbornness in following Apollo, Greece risked being conquered by the Persians.
Overview[]
The Gerousia are the council group of Sparta made up of two elders who, in turn, command the other twenty-eight members of the council. All decisions made by the Kings of Sparta must always pass through the approval of the Gerousia in order for them to take effect, and Sparta cannot go to war without the authorization of the Gerousia.
Appearance[]
The Gerousia all wear a Greek toga and sandals as clothing, but they all still look different.
The three main members of the Gerousia have:
- The first of the long hair that reaches down to the waist and the mustache, as well as the thick eyebrows and wrinkles on the face.
- The second of the bodies hair that sprouts laterally, thick eyebrows and wrinkles.
- The third of short combed hair and a beard.
Leonidas on the other hand, in addition to black and gray hair and a gray beard, wears a long cloak, a kilt and sandals.
Personality[]
The Gerousia are the wisest men in Sparta and, therefore, always make the best decisions for the good of the city. However, most of its members are also attached to traditions, such as Apollo's desire that Sparta not fight during the Carneia Festival, and because of this their stubbornness, they do not accept opposition and tries to change the minds of those who oppose it, sometimes risks leading Sparta to total destruction. Leonidas, among all, is the only one who opposes the decisions of the council and does not give in to the will of the Gerousia.
Plot[]
The Gerousia are the elders who preside over the council of Sparta and who make all the most important decisions for the city. On the occasion of the invasion of Xerxes and his Persians in Greece, the council meets to decide whether to take the field and fight them or not, but the Gerousia oppose because, on orders of Apollo, Sparta does not fight during the Carneia Festival, and despite some trying to convince them they believe the decision is final. Nonetheless, Leonidas, the King of Sparta, opposes this decision and, after destroying the statue of Apollo, decides to go to war against the wishes of the Gerousia and leaving them stunned. Another three hundred Spartans follow Leonidas and, although in the end the Battle of Thermopylae is won by the Persians, this allows Greece to win the war a year later and drive the Persians out of Greece.
Millennia after their deaths, during the Ragnarok Tournament, the Gerousia sit in the stands to watch the Ninth Round of the competition where Leonidas faces Apollo, even if in the end Leonidas is defeated and killed by his opponent and the Gerousia cry in despair over this.
Powers and Abilities[]
Command Skills and Wisdom: Being the ones who really govern Sparta, the Gerousia have excellent leadership skills which they have demonstrated on several occasions. They are also considered the wisest men in Sparta, although they can become stubborn at times as happened during the Persian invasion of Greece.
Combat Skills: Since Leonidas is also present in the Gerousia, it is likely that many of its members, although elderly, know how to fight.
Members[]
- 26 other Members
Trivia[]
- The Gerousia was composed of a total of 30 members: 28 were Gerontes, Spartans over sixty years old elected for life by the apella (assembly that brought together all male Spartiates over thirty years of age) by acclamation, while the remaining two were the Kings of Sparta (the diarchy it was a typically Spartan institution).
