Gerardo Granda, also known as Gerry, is the tritagonist of the Netflix series Control Z.

He is a former high school student and bully who used to torment Luis on a daily basis. However, this turns to a boiling point that results in Gerry accidentally murdering his tormented classmate, mainly as a result of the hacker's actions.

He is portrayed by Patricio Gallardo.

Biography[]

Before the Series[]

During a previous semester, Gerry used to hang out with the popular crowd at National School, consisting of Natalia, Raúl, Rosita, Maria, Pablo, Isabela and his two goons Dario and Ernesto. Gerry's comment about Raúl having money being the only reason why he is friends with him leaves the latter hurt and prompted him to start his actions as the hacker. At one point, he was shown to be close friends with Luis, helping him extract a soda out of a vending machine. However, this came to an end after Luis showed Gerry a drawing he made of him: This was encouragement from Alex, despite some reluctance from Luis, and then Gerry showed it to his parents but his abusive father accused him of being gay, leading Gerry to team up with Dario and Ernesto to start the bullying with Luis, out of shame for his sexuality as to mask his true feelings and avoid being made fun of at school.

Season 1[]

Gerry is known for being part of the popular crowd, but also as the local bully with his two best friends Darío & Ernesto who use to bully Luis, a lonely yet responsible student, who is unable to stand up for himself (aside from Sofia) against them when dared to fight back whenever they push him against the lockers or at one point when Gerry urinates all over his backpack. Gerry's secret turns out to be that he is secretly gay through the leaking of porn videos he often watches. He partook, along with Raúl (who picked her) and Natalia (who stole her cellphone), in revealing Isabela's secret by uploading the video for Bruno to play during a presentation hosted by the principal to teach the students how to properly use their cellphones, with the hacker threatening both of them into revealing their secrets if they refused. When the hacker reveals his secret, at Isabela's request out of fury for betraying her, Gerry is ashamed that he repeatedly tries to deny his sexual orientation, but his girlfriend Rosita dumps him anyway because of it. Nevertheless, Gerry keeps on mocking Isabela over her gender identity, inciting a fight between him, Pablo, Raúl, Natalia and Javier that ends with them being sent to the principal's office to sort out their problems. He is later scolded by his parents for the consequences of his actions.

When Luis's mother complains about the unfair mistreatment his son is receiving, Luis, in a bid to stop Gerry from bullying him ever again, falsely admits to being the hacker. However, Gerry, assuming this to be true, tries to get revenge on him. The real hacker arranges a public fight at school between both boys in which Luis tries to flee with Sofia and Javier, but is pulled out of the car by Gerry and punches him hard, causing Luis to fall over the pavement and break his neck, leaving him and the other students horrified at this monstruous act. As a result, the rest of his friends turn on Gerry and he is expelled from National School, despite his father's objections, defending his son by arguing it was Luis who started the fight, refusing to acknowledge the fact that an innocent student was almost killed. Gerry later shows up at Raúl's party, but is immediately asked to leave by Pablo, who tells him that no one wants to see or talk to him after what he did to Luis, with Darío and Ernesto also following suit, since most of the students have been giving them the cold shoulder for involving themselves in his fomer friend's schemes. Appalled, Gerry asks if they are joking, but can only respond with silence; Gerry tries to attack them, but ultimately backs out and leaves, disappointed that they no longer trust him.

Feeling guilty, Gerry starts visiting Luis frequently at the hospital. He crosses paths with Sofía, who is visiting Luis as well, swearing to kill the hacker himself, as a way to avenge him, when their identity is exposed, leading Sofía to react in disgust at this, calling him out for not learning of his mistakes. He also opens up to Luis's mother, who was initially wary of his presence, about his sexuality when asked about his leaked secret. During the night of the NONA party, Luis died of brain damage, leaving Gerry genuinely saddened and walks out of the hospital as he silently apologizes to Luis's mother. Gerry contemplates comitting suicide with a gun, but quickly stops after finding out that Raúl is the hacker, leading the now enraged Gerry to take the gun and confront Raúl, blaming Luis's death on him. Proud and unremorseful for his actions, Raúl reveals to Gerry that Luis's secret is that he had a crush on him. Infuriated, Gerry attempts to shoot Raúl but Javier is accidentally hit trying to intervene in the altercation, which is witnessed by the other students surrounding Sofia who checks on him and tells them to call an ambulance just as Gerry looks on in shock as well.

Season 2[]

Gerry ran away from the scene and hid in a motel. He tried to call his mother but couldn’t bring himself to tell her what happened. A little while later, Raúl found him. After a brief fight, Raul convinced him to hide at his house and bought him a new phone. Eventually the two got into a fight again when Gerry ranted about his life being ruined after killing Luis, and he kissed Raúl, but then quickly apologized and denied being gay. Raúl made it clear that Gerry’s sexual orientation did not matter to him.

One night while Raúl was at Rosita’s party, Gerry became frustrated with being cooped up and went to a gay bar. One of the patrons recognized him from Grindr and tried to make a move on him, despite the fact that Gerry told him to leave him alone. This resulted in Gerry becoming violent again and getting kicked out of the bar. On the sidewalk, a bouncer named Felipe began making conversation with him.

The next day while Gerry was laying on the couch, he received a text saying, “I’m coming for you!” Believing it to be the Avenger, Gerry demands their identity or he would block their contact. However, it turned out to be Felipe. Gerry began to flirt with him but was pretty embarrassed about it. Soon, however, he stripped completely naked and let Felipe look at his body. Later that night, he met Felipe at some gay club called, “Sinner.”

While at the bar, Sofia and Raúl met up with him, as they were afraid for Gerry’s safety, but also decided that in order to find the Avenger, they needed him (since he was who the Avenger wanted). Pablo showed up as well and took pictures of the three of them before creating a scene during which Gerry fled while furiously attacking Raúl, cursing him for harboring a killer before he is forcefully removed from the club by the bouncers. Raúl found him outside and gave him money and a hug before telling him never to come back.

Gerry ended up at Felipe’s place and the two had sex. In the morning, Gerry was watching the latest video on Luis’ profile—Pablo telling everyone that Gerry was getting drunk and hiding out at Raúl’s place. Meanwhile, Gerry had told Felipe his name was Carlos. Because Gerry was being cryptic the entire time with Felipe, Felipe Googled the name on Gerry’s dog tags (his full name Gerardo Granda) and realized he’d been lied to. Convinced that he was being used as a way to hide from the police, he threw Gerry out.

Gerry visited Luis’s grave and remembered how he began bullying him; Luis had given him a portrait he had drawn of Gerry. At first Gerry loved the drawing and showed it to his parents. His father, however, immediately came to the conclusion that Luis was gay and warned Gerry “not to turn into fag.” The next day, Gerry joined Dario and Ernesto in teasing Luis and told them that Luis was in love with him.

Gerry put his dog tags on Luis’ grave and apologized for what he’d done. He then went to see Marta and told her he was turning himself in.

With nowhere to go, Gerry returned to Raúl in time to pull an enraged Pablo off of his friend while listening to Raúl convincing Pablo to accept the fact that his behaviour stems from his bitterness over his breakup with Isabela, who he truly loved in spite of their previous disagreement. Gerry decided that it was about time to settle his debt with Luis, but Raúl first convinced Gerry to contact the Avenger and get to the bottom of the mystery. He ended up on the rooftop of the school. Alex, revealed to be the culprit, forced Gerry to make a live Instagram story apologizing for killing Luis. She then forced Raúl (who followed his friend) to make a poll asking people to vote on whether or not Gerry should die. The majority of the student body voted in favor of him dying. Just as Gerry was about to jump off the building, Sofia, Javier, Susana, Maria, and Claudia entered the scene and Sofia calmed Alex down. Gerry watched as the group of them fought over the bag of money, which resulted in Susana falling off the building to her apparent death.

Trivia[]

  • He is similar to Montgomery de la Cruz from 13 Reasons Why as both of them act like violent bullies at their respective high schools, which is reinforced by the abuse their fathers inflict on them, either straightening them up to become unemotional men or repressing their sexualities and act as a main antagonist towards an oppresed classmate (Luis Navarro for Gerry and Tyler Down for Monty). The only difference being that Gerry regretted his actions towards Luis (bullying and murdering him), whereas Monty did not in Tyler's case (bullying and brutally sodomizing him with a mopstick). In addition, both Gerry and Luis started off as friends before becoming enemies, particularly because of both Alex and Gerry's abusive father, while Monty and Tyler have been enemies ever since. Another difference is that Luis's short-lived friendship with Gerry soon evolved into a one-sided crush while this does not apply to Tyler because he and Monty hate each other, albeit with homophobic comments the latter makes towards him. Thus, Luis is possibly gay while Tyler is straight.
  • Coincidentally, both Alex and Gerry's Father are at fault for Gerry's feud with Luis in the first place. Alex, after she encouraged Luis to show Gerry a drawing he made of him, and Gerry's father, when Gerry showed it to him and his mother but Gerry became uncomfortable after his father made a homophobic comment, mistakenly believing that his son was gay. Thus, Gerry used this hostile personality as a mask and teamed up with Darío & Ernesto to mercilessly bully Luis as to hide his true feelings for Luis and avoid being made fun of at school out of shame.
  • He is the second LGBTQ+ character to be revealed in the series.
  • Mauro Sánchez Navarro, who portrayed Bruno in the first season, was considered for the role of Gerry Granda before Patricio Gallardo was cast.
  • Patricio Gallardo admitted that, the first time he had read the script for the series, he had no idea he would be landing the role of Gerry, whose detestable personality the former found very unpleasant, even pitying whoever was going to play the character. However, after Gallardo did land the role of Gerry, he decided to take it as a challenge in order to fully understand why Gerry behaved the way he was and convey those emotions to make them feel real.
