“ | My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed to the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing… Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose. | „ |

“ | I've seen your fine work. To get past the guards here, you must have good thieving skills. I used to think that all men, except for the great Ganondorf, were useless… but now that I've seen you, I don't think so anymore! | „ |
~ A Gerudo Warrior complimenting Link after he frees all the captured carpenters in Ocarina of Time. |
The Gerudo Tribe are major characters in the The Legend of Zelda franchise. They are a tribe of female thieves that steal and rob in order to survive in their harsh desert. They serve a sole male born every 100 years, with their most infamous leader being none other than Ganondorf.
History[]
Unified Timeline[]
Ocarina of Time[]
The Gerudo make their first appearance after forming an alliance with the Hylian king, only to invade and take over Hyrule Castle under Ganondorf's commands.
When Link sneaks into Gerudo Valley, he finds a group of carpenters being held captive after entering the valley, since no men other than their kings are allowed within Gerudo Valley. After setting all the carpenters free and battling the Gerudo guards, the leader of the guard regimen allows Link to travel through Gerudo Valley out of respect for his strength and cunning.
After traveling back in time and entering the Spirit Temple, Link encounters Nabooru, Ganondorf's supposed second-in-command, who is plotting a coup against him out of disgust for his heinous actions. Link sneaks into the temple and obtains the Silver Gauntlets, only to see Nabooru get captured by Ganondorf's adoptive mothers the Twinrova sisters, who discovered her plot.
Traveling back to the future, Link re-enters the Spirit Temple and battles an Iron Knuckle, which turns out to be a brainwashed Nabooru. Link defeats Twinrova and sets Nabooru free, allowing the latter to awaken as one of the Seven Sages.
Downfall Timeline[]
A Link to the Past[]
The Gerudo are first alluded to when the Seven Maidens tell Ganondorf's backstory, saying that he was the leader of a gang of thieves. According to the Maidens, Ganondorf slaughtered them all to obtain the Triforce. This is later proven to be untrue, as the Gerudo are arguably the only people Ganondorf cares about aside from himself.
Child Timeline[]
Majora's Mask[]
The Gerudo also have an equivalent in Termina as pirates of the Great Bay, much like their Hyrulian counterparts as desert thieves. They stole the eggs of the Indigo-Go's singer Lulu, albeit losing a few to the deep-sea pythons at Pinnacle Rock. When Mikau, one of the band's guitarists, tries to retrieve the eggs, he ends up mortally wounded and left afloat, until Link arrives and brings him to shore. There, with his last breath, he puts his last words in a song, and the young hero plays the Song of Healing, passing Mikau's soul on and turning him into a mask for Link to don a Zora form. Utilizing the powers bestowed upon him as a Zora, he sneaks into the Pirates' Fortress, engaging the Gerudo that stood in his way and bringing back the eggs. Afterwards, he would go on to find the rest in Pinnacle Rock.
Later, after Link awakens the turtle that lays near Zora Hall and transports Link to the Great Bay Temple, Aveil's second in command would lead a boat of Gerudo to raid the Temple, only to be sucked in by the protective cyclone that surrounds it.
After Link defeats Majora, some Gerudo would be seen in the credits sailing. It is unknown if they have ever turned over a new leaf.
Twilight Princess[]
Aside from Ganondorf, the Gerudo are not seen anywhere, but only mentioned in name by the Gerudo Desert. There the place has become completely desolate of Gerudo, with only their symbols and alphabet being around.
The cause of the disappearance of the Gerudo is unknown, but it is presumed that a war broke out between the Gerudo and Hylians after the King of Hyrule was notified of Ganondorf's future treachery by Link and Zelda after the events of Ocarina of Time.
Four Swords Adventures[]
The Gerudo return in Four Swords Adventures, now living in tents at the Gerudo Village in the Desert of Doubt. They would also reconcile with the rest of Hyrule and become friendlier to outsiders. A new Ganondorf would be reborn, and the Gerudo would really focus more on guiding him to a path of good. Despite their efforts, it could not prevent the overarching curse of the very first Demon King, and thus Ganondorf, like before, was still destined to be power hungry. As per the prophecy, Ganondorf trespasses into the Pyramid, stealing the Trident of Power and becoming the King of Darkness Ganon. After that, they tightened the boundaries of the Desert, closing it to outsiders.
The Links would come across the Gerudo while they searched for the Purple Maiden. There, the Gerudo would fill the four heroes in on the circumstances that led up to the current state of things. Hearing about the Links' quest, they allowed the quartet access to the rest of the Desert and the Pyramid
Adult Timeline[]
The Wind Waker[]
The Gerudo are absent in The Wind Waker, save for Ganondorf, who would reference his people when describing the circumstances they have had to endure.
It is implied that the Forsaken Fortress was once formerly the Gerudo's Fortress, as Tetra mentions that the fortress "used to be the home of a band of pirates they used to compete with".

Trivia[]
- In the Nintendo 64 games, the player can position the camera to reveal the inside of the Iron Knuckles' heads to be Gerudo in the armor. In the 3DS versions of the games, this feature of the Iron Knuckles was removed, though the subtle Gerudo traits shown by their armor's details still remain.
