The Ghosts are the main antagonists of the Cars on the Road episode, "Lights Out". They are a group of various models who are the scariest ghosts who lived in Destiny's Hotel.

In the second episode, McQueen and Mater both head up to the entrance of the hotel and are creepily greeted by Randy, the founder of Destiny Hotel. Randy greets the duo in a menacing fashion. In response, Mater says "nope" multiple times with McQueen not being fazed by Randy in anyway. Randy soon lets the two into the hotel with McQueen describing that it has vintage charm. Mater is creeped out by the whole decor of the hotel as Randy begins to slowly explain how everything goes for it. Randy specifically states that the check-out time for all guests is precisely at noon and with thunder breaking. Mater simply gulps in response.
As McQueen travels down the hall to find the noise, he passes seemingly 3 innocent pictures of older cars until those 3 cars come out of their pictures when McQueen is far enough and proceed to follow him. McQueen has a sneaking suspicion that someone is following him and stops to look back. The three ghosts pop out and the same two girls once again call out McQueen's name. Later on in the episode, as McQueen is escaping the antifreeze, he comes across a room that is playing music and hears lively chatter. He enters the room hoping to be greeting other cars only to be greeted with ghost cars instead. One of the three ghost cars that was following McQueen greets him with another claiming that he was late. Another ghost car suggests he should try the punch as the twins tell him that "it's to die for." The party soon resumes with a ghost car suggesting to McQueen that they should dance and proceeds to pick him up and spins him around as she claims that he is light on his tires. McQueen is passed around the fellow ghost cars and is tossed out the room with them telling him not to leave as they were just getting started. McQueen says sorry in response for his early departure.
Later McQueen hears the sound of an engine to the hall next to him. He calls out to it only to be greeted by Wraith Rod. McQueen screams and takes off quickly as Wraith chases him down. The carpet under McQueen starts to roll up and questions what is going on. McQueen travels down the hall once again with Wraith now being right beside him with two miniature Wraith Rods laughing alongside him. McQueen pushes himself to escape Wraith only to randomly put outside and to soon enter a door falling downwards with everything McQueen saw flashing right in front of him.
At the end of the episode, Randy was appeared like a ghost making an evil laugh and coughs.

- One of the cars says "Going my way?" as a nod to The Twilight Zone episode, "The Hitchhiker".
- Wraith Rod looks similar to Mater. This is one of the only two times a character uses a similar design to Mater, with another one being Ivan from Cars 2.
- Wraith Rod's headlights, emergency lights, and hood are similar to Mater's.
- The twin cars resemble the Grady twins, and their line "Come race with us" is similar to "Come play with us".
- Randy's voice is similar to that of the Ghost Host.
- Alexie & Alexa are based on Alexie & Alexa Grady from The Shining.

- According to the Cars on the Road Happy Meal PowerUp, River Scott is dead, based on the fact that his character is portrayed as a ghost in Hotel Destiny, however this is most likely non canon.
- Diana Geardado is named after, Pixar editorial, character and production coordinator, Diana Guardado.
- It is possible when she was alive she was painted black, as her Color Changer depicts her alternate color as black.
- There is a ghost that appears in Hotel Destiny, that has the same model and racing number as River Scott, presuming his death.
- Coincidentally, Randy has the same model as Steve Hearsell, who is named after Steve Purcell, Randy's voice actor.
- Stanley in Cars Toons: Radiator Springs Tall Tales, episode: The Radiator Springs 500½ was seen as a ghost but not in Green in blue.
