As our fight against the Ganglion drew on, neither side seemed to be gaining any ground. Suddenly, dematerialization struck my homeworld. Then came a third side to the conflict---one hostile to both. Namely, the Ghosts.
~ Elma discussing about the Ghosts.

The Ghosts (Japanese: ゴースト, Gōsuto) are major antagonists in Xenoblade Chronicles X. They are a mysterious alien race that waged war against humanity alongside the Ganglion. They played a key role in the destruction of Elma's homeworld in their pursuit for the Ares Prime.

History[]

Background[]

The origin of the Ghosts are entirely unclear, but they are believed to be biological weapons in control of a mysterious faction opposing both the Ganglion and Samaarian. Elma views them as the universe's "corrective system", believing they have no free will of their own and are more akin to a force of nature.

The Ghosts first made their appearance known to the Samaarians when a scientist named Void was studying the Conduit and using its power to construct the Ares. The Ghosts later appeared back on Elma's homeworld, attacking both its citizens and the Ganglion that invaded it. They were sent to hunt down the Ares, though for what reasons remain unknown. Nonetheless, this forced Elma to abandon her planet with the Ares and carry on a new mission to Earth.

The Ghosts were later alerted by the presence of the Ares on Earth when Void led his army against humanity to reclaim it, causing a conflict between the two factions. The battle between the Ghosts and Ganglion ultimately led to the destruction of Earth, as well as the disappearance of Void and the Ares's pilot, Al.
