Hanzo Masanari, later known as the Giant Toad, is a major antagonist in Nioh and a supporting character in its sequel, Nioh 2. He is the mighty leader of the Iga clan and Hattori Hanzo's father, cursed into a yokai in the form of a toad.
Appearance[]
As his name implies, the Giant Toad takes the appearance of a massive toad standing on its hind legs. His eyes glow red and several blood vessels can be seen on his belly. He wears a torn vest around his chest, along with a red ribbon hanging over his neck and a black leathery bandolier holding three kunai. Around his waist is an obi sash tied in the back.
Personality[]
As a human, Hanzo was a strict leader of the Iga clan, forcing his recruits to undergo harsh training to determine a successful ninja to become the next leader of the clan. Even when reduced to a yokai, the Giant Toad follows a code of honor to both his name and the people he deems strong in battle. In fact, he compliments his defeat against William as a good way to waste time.
Biography[]
Before becoming a yokai, Hanzo Masanari was the first of the Hanzo line to serve as the leader of the Iga clan. He was known and feared amongst the land for his harsh training on those he sought to one day succeed him, including his son Hattori Hanzo. At some point, he was cursed by Amrita into becoming the host of a yokai, becoming the Giant Toad. But because of his devotion to the future of his clan, the Giant Toad retained his humanity and continued to train his successors.
William encounters the Giant Toad in the mission "The Iga Escape" when he and Hattori sneak into the Iga's fortress to find Kelley, battling numerous Iga clan members who were brainwashed by the sorcerer. Near the hideout's end, William is ambushed by the Giant Toad, praising him for reaching it that far before preparing to end him. But William prevails, and the Giant Toad accepts his defeat. Before vanishing in smoke, the Giant Toad tells his son Hattori how to be a proper ninja, lecturing about haste being a harbinger of failure.
The Giant Toad can later be refought in the sub mission "The Giant Frog Brawl". After defeating the undead yokai, Hattori thanks William knowing his father can now rest in peace.
