The Giant Walrus, also known as the Monster, is the main antagonist of the Pingu episode "Pingu's Dream".

He is a giant walrus that appeared in Pingu's nightmare. In the episode itself, he just wants to play with Pingu in a way that scares him away. In the book adaptation of the episode, however, he is much darker, wanting to eat the young penguin.

He was voiced by the late Carlo Bonomi.

Biography[]

The Walrus appeared in Pingu's dream stalking Pingu while riding on his bed, who found interest in Pingu as a play thing. He eventually showed himself to Pingu, scaring and trapping the little penguin with an igloo that levitated where Pingu's dream started. He then stretches and squishes Pingu laughingly as he found Pingu as a play thing. As Pingu and the bed run away from him, he eats the mattress and gets distracted making Pingu and the bed further escape from him. He was presumably mentioned by Pingu in the last scene, where sobbing Pingu consoled by his mother about his nightmare.

Appearance[]

Unlike real-life walruses, he is shown to have human-shaped teeth instead of tusks. Oddly enough, he is also an unrealistically gigantic walrus appearing to be monstrous.

Personality[]

He is shown to be goofy, mischievous, and playful but due to his gigantic size and monstrous appearance his behavior scares Pingu making him tormented. In the original version, he is heard laughing and grunting in a deep voice. However, in the remastered version of the episode he speaks more in a deep voice.

In the book version, he is shown to be less goofy and darker, appearing to be more intimidating as mentioned that he sees more Pingu as food rather than a play thing.

Controversy[]

This walrus became a controversial character in Pingu causing the episode Pingu’s Dream placed in unofficial ban in most countries due to his haunting and monstrous nature caused young viewers to be frightened upon watching the episode.

Trivia[]

  • Pingu's Dream was banned in several countries mainly because of the Walrus, thanks to his monstrous design, his freakish movements, and his overall frightening nature, and it wasn't released on VHS by BBC in the UK. However, the episode managed to get a cult following due to its infamy.
  • The Walrus was once used as a puppet of Otmar Gutmann's short film released in the 1970s or early 1980s speaking in German.
  • In the book version, the walrus was referred as a monster and sees Pingu as food rather than a play thing.
  • In some said sources, there was once a version of Pingu's Dream that he growls and squeals when the walrus showed himself to Pingu and this was the earliest version of Pingu's Dream and his speech was edited out by laughing and grunting due to it's horrific effect on younger children. However, some claimed that this was fake and edited out as some noticed that during the scene where the Walrus roars, a sound is blended with his infamous creepy laugh as you hear carefully. On the other hand, some others claimed that it was the earliest release version and it was never edited in French airings.
    • It is unclear and unknown if this said version was original since netizens are currently debatable if the Walrus roaring and squealing is legit or edited out by some different netizens.
  • He appeared in Pingu Comic Vol. 1, this time he is scaring Pinga but Pingu faces and challenging himself, making him run away from them. However, his size in this version seems to be more realistic and he is seen to have tusks like a real-life walrus.
  • Even though it only appeared in one episode, the Giant Walrus is one of the most well-known parts of the show, being a popular subject of memes. This is due to its unsettling appearance, being a giant realistic walrus in Pingu, which otherwise consists of cutesy-looking characters.
  • In the earlier version of the walrus, his dialogue is only heard laughing and snorting in the scene he appeared to Pingu. However, in the remastered version he has more dialect in the scene he shows up and plays Pingu rather than laughing and snorting like the original version.
  • It can be assumed, that the Giant Walrus is a character from the storybook Pingu's mother is reading him that brought him in Pingu's nightmare in the beginning of the episode.
