Gideon Gordon Graves, born Gordon Goose is the overarching antagonist of the anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which is loosely based on the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim.

Like in the graphic novel and film adaptation, he is the founder of the League of Evil Exes, and Ramona Flowers's seventh Evil Ex-Boyfriend, who seeks to destroy Ramona's new boyfriend Scott Pilgrim. However, the series is set in an alternate timeline in which Scott is seemingly killed by Ramona's first Evil Ex-Boyfriend Matthew Patel, who usurps Gideon as the leader of the League, sending him into a depression, He was later picked up by his new lover and partner in crime Julie Powers who the both are bent to take back what Scott and Ramona had did to them.

He was voiced by Jason Schwartzman in the English version, who also played Gideon in the film adaptation, Ethan Dulles in Slackers, Gag Halfrunt in the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy movie adaptation, Josto Fadda in Fargo and Spot in the Spider-Verse trilogy. In the Japanese version, he was voiced by Tomokazu Seki, who also played Gilgamesh in Fate, Hadlar in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Enrico Pucci in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, Great Leader of Shocker in the Kamen Rider franchise, Rob Lucci in One Piece, and Rekka Hoshimiya in Fire Force.

Biography[]

In this version, it is revealed that Graves's birth name is Gordon Goose, who lived in Northern Canada. He was extremely fearless, with an extremely dorky appearance which he took in pride. One day, he went to the most popular girl in High School and gave her a business plan as to why she should date him, only for her to turn him down by dropping his book, leading to himself being mocked by the entire school. Following this, he changed his name and became extremely successful, as well as Ramona's boyfriend. He would also form the League of Evil Exes following their breakup.

At the beginning of the show, he observes Ramona's first date with Scott from his evil lair at his record company. He then invites Ramona's first evil ex-boyfriend Matthew Patel to his lair, and orders him to defeat Scott. However, during the ensuing fight at the Rockit, an older version of Scott pulls his past self through a portal and fakes his death. When Ramona refuses to get back together with him, Patel organizes a meeting with all the other exes, citing that as he supposedly killed Scott, he should be the leader of the League. This leads to a duel between the two: If Patel wins, he gains all of Graves's resources, but if Graves wins, Patel dies. Patel ultimately manages to win, and takes control of both the League and Graves's company.

With all his allies abandoning him, Graves uses what little money he has to return to Canada and reunite with his old classmate Julie Powers, who allows him to stay in her house. During his stay, Graves falls into a deep depression, but is called by Ramona's second Evil Ex Lucas Lee, whose movie star career has failed. The two then become friends and end up trashing Julie's house by playing Paintball and constructing a giant half-pipe within the house, to Julie's anger. When Lee leaves, Graves tells Julie he actually has a plan to get back at Patel, thus making her attracted to him again.

The two later arrive at Patel's new musical, which is an adaptation of an alternate universe where Scott defeated the entire League of Evil Exes. There, Graves intends to blow up Patel, having planted bombs at the top of the stage. However, as he is about to, Older Scott teleports him, Julie, the League, as well as Scott and Ramona, among others to the future, intending to kill Scott and Ramona for getting together. Graves and the rest of the League decide to fight Older Scott, but are teleported back to the past during the fight. After the musical finishes, Patel disarms the bomb and brings Gideon to him, and offers him his company back as long as he can continue his theatre work. The two agree and embrace.

In a post-credits scene, Gideon and Julie are seen in his evil lair, observing Scott and Ramona, claiming that the real game is about to begin, however given the cancelation of the series, this scene was only played for satire, poking fun at the cliche of a stinger in media.

Personality[]

At first, Gideon appears to be cold, calculating and always in control of the situation and superficially polite much like his previous incarnations. After losing everything, however, he's revealed to be a much more vulnerable and insecure person, revealing that his entire life following high school was crafted out of a desire to escape from his dorky roots. While living with and later rekindling a relationship with Julie as well as forming a proper friendship with Lucas he gains back his confidence and much of his old personality, revealing that he's hatched a plan to get back at Matthew for ruining him and becomes evil once again, albeit much more well-adjusted than before and now with Julie at his side.

Appearance[]

Gideon's appearance is mostly the same as it was in the comics, being a fair-skinned man with thick, mid-length black hair and thick, rectangular glasses that sometimes obscure his eyes, although with that said he also takes some influence from Jason Schwartzman's appearance as him in the film adaptation, being shorter and skinnier than the comic version and having his main outfit be the same as the film version's, a white suit with black trousers & tie, red shirt and white shoes. During his time staying with Julie Powers, he neglects his appearance, growing stubble and wearing the same pajamas for several days.

Trivia[]

  • In the anime Gideon appears to be much younger than he was in the comics and film adaptation, in the comic he was 31 years old, and in the anime due to growing up and attending school with Julie, he's contemporaries with most of the series' main cast, being around 23 years old.
  • He also appears much less powerful than his previous selves, who was easily the strongest of Ramona's evil exes in both versions (although both the film and anime have done away with comic Gideon's main power of utilizing "The Glow"), whereas here he was bested by Matthew Patel.
