“ | Well, let's see what it can do against the Gigan. | „ |
~ Controller X as he sends Gigan to kill Mothra. |
Gigan is a dinosaur-like cyborg space monster and one of the secondary antagonists of the Godzilla franchise. He is one of Godzilla's greatest enemies.
In Final Wars, he's a cyberspace monster built by the Xiliens, which has two large metal hooks in place of the hands (which were replaced by double long saws when it was renovated in Godzilla: Final Wars).
In the Showa series, he was a very strong difficult, brutal opponent, as he can make the heroic Godzilla bleed rapidly, while in Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla defeated him in less than a minute without any allies, but returns later in the film and is killed by Mothra. Although not as famous as King Ghidorah, Godzilla, Rodan, Mechagodzilla or Mothra, Gigan is among the franchise's most well-loved characters, frequently ranking highly in popularity surveys. Gigan has appeared in three Godzilla films (twice in the 1970's and returned in 2004).
In the Showa era, he was portrayed by the late Kenpachiro Satsuma, who previously portrayed Hedorah and would go on to play Godzilla in all seven Heisei films. In Godzilla: Final Wars, he was portrayed by Kazuhiro Yoshida, who also played Hedorah in the same film. Coincidentally, both Satsuma and Yoshida played Gigan and Hedorah.
Personality[]
“ | If King Ghidorah is a great villain full of dignity, Mechagodzilla has the image of a nihilistic killer. While Gigan, who also has the image of a murderer, has the image of a brutal, bloodthirsty ferocious cutthroat. | „ |
~ Gigan being described. |
“ | Gigan was an evil entity, and today... the mutants have that evil in their blood cells. | „ |
~ The Shobijin talking about Gigan. |
Gigan is described as a "bloodthirsty, ferocious cutthroat" in contrast to Mechagodzilla being a "consistently coldhearted and composed professional", and as such, Gigan is a truly heartless and merciless individual, exhibiting various forms of cruelty and violence. He lacks empathy, does not value human life, and lacks affability. He will betray any ally he makes and let them get brutalized, kill anybody who opposes him, disregard others with no regret, torture anyone he encounters, and force two Godzilla and Anguirus to witness each other's pain. Gigan is generally depicted as a brutal, violent, backstabbing, ruthless, and absolutely, merciless creature. He is portrayed as heartless, traitorous, and unhingingly cruel, with psychopathic tendencies. Gigan's only concern is for himself, showing no empathy or compassion towards others. He takes pleasure in seeing people bleed, relishing in the suffering of Godzilla's friends and allies. He is willing to go to extreme lengths to torment them, even hindering Godzilla's efforts to save them whenever the opportunity arises, even killing Mothra. He revels in chaos and massacre, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake without a single care in the world. He is willing to achieve world domination and even potentially universal domination with plans for genocide alongside the Xiliens. Gigan was determined in carrying out their ruthless plot, spreading massacre, chaos, and destruction wherever he goes.
Along with his love for torture, Gigan also has a tendency to brutally torture his victims before killing them, and in one of his most longest moments of torturing someone, he inflicts excruciating and devastating pain to Jet Jaguar with Megalon, sadistically smiling and laughing with no remorse at all. He also held Jet Jaguar, one of Godzilla's closest friends, hostage and threatened to kill him if Godzilla came any closer, taunting him about it as well. Gigan also mutilates Anguirus and continues to cripple him for his own sadistic pleasure, and then force Anguirus to watch Godzilla get tortured to near-death by the Godzilla Tower. He shows immense pleasure and is extremely overjoyed witnessing the pain of others and enjoys keeping his victims alive to prolong their suffering through extreme torture. Considered one of the most ruthless, violent, and aggressive Kaiju to ever exist, he holds the distinction of being the first to draw blood from Godzilla. Each confrontation with him quickly escalates into a bloody and gory battle, show casing his brutal nature and insatiable thirst for destruction.
He derives perverse pleasure from the pain of others, finding joy in mocking and tormenting them when they are in distress. With a relentless determination, he goes to extreme lengths to stop Godzilla's attempts to save his friends, willing to go as far as to kill him and everyone in his circle just for sheer amusement. His methods of cruelty are not limited to physical harm, as he takes pleasure in inflicting prolonged agony on his victims without a shred of mercy or compassion. Gigan also displays tendencies attack and strike opponents when they are down or at their weakest, as during a brutal battle with Godzilla, he ruthlessly used his Hammer Hands to strike and stab the already injured monster while he was already in unimaginable pain and was helpless on the ground. Despite Godzilla's inability to defend himself, Gigan showed no mercy and continued his assault without remorse. Gigan's cruel and unrelenting nature is what makes him a ferocious and relentless Kaiju. He displayed his determination to kill Godzilla at any cost and forcefully keep Anguirus at bay. What makes it worse is that he heartlessly made Anguirus witness the torture and killing of Godzilla, after already subjecting Anguirus to extreme torment. Gigan would have even murdered Anguirus without any hesitation if he had intervened.
Gigan lacks any sense of goodness or sympathy within him. He naturally performs devastating attacks on powerful foes to quickly cripple them. He also has no qualms about cruelly betraying and turning on his companions or allies, as he displays a complete lack of concern for their well-being. He displayed utter indifference towards King Ghidorah, showing no hesitation in leaving him to face potential execution by Godzilla and Anguirus. Gigan was also ready to betray Megalon, leaving him on the ground to be blasted by Godzilla's atomic breath. Without a second thought, he also left Megalon to fend for himself against Godzilla and Jet Jaguar, leaving him critically injured.
During his time with the Garogas, Gigan has remained unchanged, showing no signs of remorse or compassion. He continues to indulge in extreme cruelty and violence, still continuing to find enjoyment in inflicting harm on others. His penchant for mass destruction, death, and torture remains unchanged. He displays a blatant willingness in viciously attacking Zone Fighter, Godzilla's close friend and partner, restraining him and using his upgraded claws to explode a charge on his head. He also tries to stop Godzilla from saving Zone Fighter with everything he has, even faking death and launching a sneak attack on him. Gigan in general doesn't even seem to care for his masters, showing no concern when they were seemingly obliterated during the destruction of the Godzilla Tower.
Overall, Gigan is a treacherous, wicked, malevolent, malicious, psychopathic, heartless, and highly cruel sadistic mutilating creature with no remorse for the awful atrocities he has committed, and an incomprehensible number of people could die and it would not impact him at all. He is a merciless and sadistic mass murderer, probably willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve his goals and continue causing destruction and suffering indefinitely.

In the Millennium era, Gigan was a cyborg that had been defeated over 10,000 years ago by the guardian kaiju, Mothra. The organic/cybernetic monster was revived by the Xiliens' commander who activated him since Xiliens can control kaiju such as Gigan that have the 5th blood type - M Base. Gigan then destroyed the Earth Defense Force Headquarters building with his eye-lasers and wreaked havoc on Tokyo killing several people in his destruction. The Gotengo crew, the last resistance for humanity's future, rushed to Antarctica to free Godzilla so he can fight all monsters controlled by the Xiliens.

Gigan fighting Godzilla in Godzilla: Final Wars.
Gigan was sent to the South Pole to destroy the Gotengo, only to find himself confronting the newly reawakened Godzilla. In the ensuing fight, Gigan's head was blasted off, but the Xiliens repaired him so as to aid their other monster, Monster X. Gigan battled Godzilla alongside Monster X until his old enemy Mothra showed up. In the fight, the cybernetic monster set the guardian kaiju ablaze with his eyebeam and seemed to kill her. However, two of his razor discs, which he had fired during the battle, came back and cut his head off. Mothra then finished him by slamming her fiery body onto him, generating an enormous explosion.
