~ Gigi Cestone before murdering Philly Parisi. |
Gianluigi ''Gigi'' Cestone is a supporting character in the second season and major character in the third season of the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He is a caporegime in the DiMeo Crime Family and despite being the capo of the Aprile Crew, he is most memorably and frequently seen around the Soprano Crew and hanging out with Tony Soprano, Paulie Gualtieri and the rest of the crew.
He was portrayed by John Fiore.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Gianluigi "Gigi" Cestone was born on December 11, 1955 somewhere in northern New Jersey. Prior to 1999, Gigi was a part of Junior Soprano's crew until he became a part of the Soprano Crew, which was led by Tony Soprano. While he is only shown four times while a part of the Soprano Crew, he was shown to be loyal, hard-working, a good-earner and also being extremely popular in the family.
Season 2[]
In Gigi's first appearance in the series, he is sent by Tony Soprano to murder "Philly Spoons" Parisi for spreading rumors around of Tony Soprano trying to murder his own mother. Gigi is picked up by Philly in his car after getting back to the Newark Liberty International Airport. When Philly drops Gigi back at his place, Gigi pulls out a gun and shoots Philly twice in the head. After being deafened by the gunshots, he is picked up by Paulie Gualtieri.
Season 3[]
In the fall of 2000, Gigi is granted the rank of a Capo and becomes the leader of the Aprile Crew, due to Richie Aprile's death which was only known by Furio Giunta, Christopher Moltisanti, Tony and Janice Soprano. Despite being well-liked by the members of the Soprano Crew, Gigi wasn't welcomed by the remaining members of the Aprile Crew. However, the most disrespectful member of the Aprile Crew was Ralph Cifaretto, who was heavily disliked by the majority of the DiMeo Family as well as Gigi, with Ralphie's main reason for being such a nuisance being the fact that he wished to be the leader of the Aprile Crew instead of Gigi. In the episode "Another Toothpick", Gigi and Tony ordered the hit on Mustang Sally after he gave Bryan Spatafore brain damage, which was carried out by Bobby Bacala Sr. However, after the murder of Sally and his friend, Carlos, Bobby died in a car crash, which damaged Gigi's reputation as a Capo. Despite being incompetent as a Capo, Tony left Gigi's rank as if he didn't, he would have to make Ralphie a Capo, which wouldn't work out due to his insane and reckless nature.
In the episode "He Is Risen", Gigi dies of a heart attack which was caused by the stress of putting his kids through college without a ton of money and the stress that Ralphie put on him. His heart attack was also more severe due to the pressure that came from him going to the bathroom and defecating at the time. His body was discovered by Vito Spatafore, Eugene Pontecorvo and Donny K. Left with no choice after Gigi's death, Tony had Ralph become the new capo of the Aprile Crew.
