Gihwan Kang is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Gyeongshik Kim) of the survival horror web-manwha Forest of Humans, created by Junho Hwang.
A brutal serial rapist and murderer, Gihwan Kang was one of the ten death row convicts chosen to be experimented on at the facility, and is considered one of the worst ones and the sole one who was not released by the others to protect themselves.
Personality[]
Gihwan Kang is one of the worst of the ten death row convicts, known for his sheer brutality and unflinching evil. He’s portrayed as being a silent yet individual who appears to only think about killing people for enjoyment and little else. He barely smiles apart from when murdering and abusing others, and always has a serious scowl on his face. Anytime the interviewers attempts to ask for his childhood or ones he loved, he dismisses them as wasting their time and says they could spend their time killing people.
He is so dangerous, he’s the only convict that Hyeseon Kim refuses to release purely due to not wanting to die by his hands. Sure enough, when Jaejun releases him, Gihwan attempts to kill everyone in the facility for fun, and when confronting both Jaejun and Ru Ha, takes a particular enjoyment trying to torture them both by brutally beating Jaejun and forcing him to watch as he attempts to rapes Ru Ha.
Despite this, Gihwan exhibits well enough intellect, as for most of the story he is contained in a straight jacket, yet manages to take out threats against him such as Junho and Jaejun, and he manages to find a way to burn off his skin so he can get the jacket off of him.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Gihwan’s childhood or past, beyond that he is a dangerous death row inmate, convicted for the murders and rape of 20 people. In one specific incident, Gihwan went to China and hired 8 hunters to help him poach, only for him to rape and kill them all. He was placed on death row for his actions and, alongside 9 others, picked out to be researched at a top secrete abandoned facility in the woods. Gihwan was placed with a straight jacket, presumably due to his unstable nature.
During his interview, Gihwan was uncooperative, simply staring at the camera before telling the interview to “go fuck himself” and when the interview attempts to ask about his childhood or any loved ones, Gihwan coldly tells him he’s wasting his time, and if he was him, he would think about who to kill next.
When Hyeseon Kim manages to break out and free all the other prisoners to murder the staff, she explicitly leaves Gihwan locked in his cell, in order for him not to kill them all. Later on, Jaejun is searching for any exits and decides to open his cell because it would be fun, and Gihwan immediately attacks and kicks him in the head, knocking him out. When thinking he’s dead, Gihwan goes to find the other convicts to kill them all.
There, he meets Gyeongshik Kim, who has slight brain damage due to Jaejun attacking him with a hammer. Gihwan simply tries to order Gyeongshik to take off his straight jacket, as he needs to use the bathroom. He and Gyeongshik are interrupted and ambushed by Junho Park, who attempts to kill Gyoengshik. This fails, however, and Gihwan knocks him out onto the floor and attempts to get Gyeongshik to torture him to death. Instead, Gyeongshik finds more pleasure trying to torture Gihwan to death and knocks him on the floor.
At that moment, Hyeseon comes and tries dragging Junho away, to which Gihwan attempts to convince Gyeongshik to torture them instead, with him left unable to choose. Jaejun and Ru Ha come in and Jaejun demands to fight each other and end it, with Gihwan taking advantage at this moment and knocking down Gyeongshik, kicking his head in before demanding someone untie him. When no one wants to help him, he simply walks out of sight as the four others try and kill Gyeongshik.
When Gyeongshik awakens and attacks Jaejun, ready to kill him, Gihwan comes back and bashes his head in, killing Gyeongshik, and revealing he managed to somehow burned the straight jacket off, which caused scarring all over his body. When Ru Ha, who previously fled when Gyoengshik attacked, comes back, Gihwan is brutally beating Jaejun, with Junho and Hyeseon having fled. Gihwan stops in his tracks and tells Ru Ha he’s gonna kill everyone when he kills Jaejun, and when questioned by Ru Ha about letting everyone go, he simply says he can kill everyone, and that’s what he can do.
Ru Ha threatens him with a buzzsaw, but Gihwan tells him that everyone dies, but not everybody kills and that not everyone can take a life, calling Ru Ha’s bluff. She attempts to swing it, but her conscious gets the better of her and she misses, refusing to kill him as she breaks down. Gihwan smirks as he pulls her hair down, telling her she looks better with it down. Thinking that Jaejun and Ru Ha are in a relationship, Gihwan decides to play a game: Kicking the buzz saw across the hall he tells Jaejun to have a race, that either he will reach the buzzsaw first, or that Gihwan will rape Ru Ha.
When Jaejun begins moving to the buzzsaw, Gihwan orders the distraught and in tears Ru Ha to bend over, kicking and head stomping Jaejun to for her to do it. However, with the encouragement of Jaejun, Ru Ha instead sits against the wall, and Gihwan doesn’t mind as he attempts to rape her, saying he will “take his time with her.”
However, this is revealed to be a trap and Ru Ha, when saying she can’t kill someone but can still hurt the, uses the concealed needle to blind Gihwan, causing his eyes to burn. Gihwan screams in pain as he falls, screaming that he kill them all before Jaejun recovers with a hammer and bashes Gihwan over the head, killing him instantly.
