The mark of my dignity shall scar thy DNA.
~ Gill

Gill is the overarching antagonist in the Street Fighter franchise.

He is the leader of the Secret Society, a clandestine and mysterious organization composed of the most influential and powerful individuals throughout humanity's existence. This exclusive organization has long exerted its covert influence over global affairs, manipulating and shaping world events from behind the scenes since time immemorial. Their ultimate objective revolves around the realization of a catastrophic agenda, meticulously designed to secure their own version of a perfect and harmonious future. He is also second and dangerous arch-nemesis of Ryu.

He was voiced by Bruce Robertson in both Street Fighter III: New Generation and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, Lawrence Bayne in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, in English by Liam O'Brien in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, and in Japanese by Fumihiko Tachiki.

Appearance[]

Gill possesses a striking physical presence, as his well-defined muscular physique is divided into two contrasting halves: one side adorned with a vibrant shade of red, while the other side exhibits a captivating blue hue. Complementing his powerful build, Gill's lustrous blonde locks cascade gracefully, enhancing his overall godlike appearance. It is evident that Gill intentionally emulates the divine figures of ancient Greek mythology, as he exudes an aura reminiscent of their ethereal beauty and strength. Staying true to this theme, Gill engages in combat without the burden of clothing, save for a modest white thong delicately encircling his hips, emphasizing his confident and unabashed nature.

The asymmetrical color scheme used for Gill in the Street Fighter games was a deliberate choice by Capcom to showcase the impressive graphics of the CPS-3 board. In previous iterations of the game, certain character details would switch sides depending on their orientation, such as Sagat's eye-patch. Originally, Gill was intended to be colored in black and white, with abilities related to light and darkness. However, it was later decided to change his color palette to red and blue in order to better highlight the game's visual capabilities. The black and white colors are still utilized as secondary tones in Gill's design. Furthermore, Gill was specifically designed to wear a loin cloth, allowing his red and blue hues to be prominently displayed.

Kolin, Gill's secretary, has purposely been given an asymmetrical haircut in her sprite design. This unique hairstyle adds to her overall visual appeal when she is rotated from one direction to another, just like Gill. Instead of having a mirrored sprite, she stands out graphically. In the game Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Kolin's sprite has a special glow effect programmed into it. This effect constantly renders her sprite in both positive and negative colors, showcasing the impressive graphical capabilities of the CPS-3 board. As a result of this enhanced appearance, Kolin is sometimes referred to as "Omega Gill".

In the UDON comics, prior to his transformation, Gill's complexion had a tanned hue, and his eyes were a deep shade of gray.During his pre-fight introduction in both the New Generation and 2nd Impact versions of the game, Gill can be seen donning a lengthy robe that is a shade of gray. However, in the 3rd Strike installment, his attire undergoes a notable transformation. Now, he sports a hooded cloak that combines hues of light brown and red, accompanied by a flowing robe in a striking shade of blue green. To complete his revamped ensemble, Gill pairs it with a set of matching brown sandals.

In the game Street Fighter V, when playing Kolin's character story, Gill can be seen donning a distinctive attire consisting of a white cloak resembling a robe, with one side being sleeveless. Interestingly, this particular outfit later became his primary alternate costume. Furthermore, in Gill's character story, he is depicted once again wearing a white robe, further reinforcing the significance of this attire in his overall character design. The attire he wears for battle closely resembles the ensemble donned by the mighty warriors of the Roman Empire. It consists of a splendid gold armor that covers his arms and chest, leaving them bare and displaying his formidable strength. The armor is complemented by a helmet, gauntlets, and leg guards, all crafted with intricate detail and shimmering in the same resplendent gold. Completing the ensemble is a rustic brown skirt, reminiscent of the ancient Roman attire, which gracefully extends below his knees. Adding a touch of regality and grandeur to his appearance is a long, flowing red cape that cascades down his back. To further accentuate his striking appearance, his luscious, sun-kissed blond locks are elegantly tied in a low ponytail, secured with a pristine white clip, adding a touch of elegance and refinement to his formidable presence.

Biography[]

Background[]

Gill, the enigmatic figure at the helm of the Secret Society, a clandestine organization with a history spanning over two millennia, holds the power to shape world events according to their grand design. Their ultimate goal? The salvation of humanity and the establishment of a utopian society. In contrast to the other contenders vying for leadership within the Secret Society, who are forcefully abducted and subjected to mind control, Gill and his younger brother Urien possess a unique background. Born to devoted parents who were deeply entrenched in the cult, Gill and Urien's lineage within the organization predates their very existence. Remarkably, both of their parents were esteemed candidates for the prestigious position of cult presidency, boasting impressive academic accolades with advanced degrees in their respective fields. Notably, their mother, a remarkable individual who excelled in athletic prowess at an Olympic level and held a doctorate in Sports Dynamics, emerged as a favored candidate for the esteemed role of President.

In order to prepare Gill for an intense hand-to-hand combat training program, the Secret Society utilized genetic enhancements during his youth. These enhancements significantly amplified his physical attributes, such as strength and speed. As a result, Gill not only possessed extraordinary abilities, but also became the most exceptional student among the numerous enhanced warriors enrolled in the program. His unparalleled skills and talents even outshone those of his envious sibling, Urien.

According to the myth of the Secret Society, it was believed that the soul of the previous Emperor would be reborn into a new body after their death. The Secret Society conducted a special training program to determine the identity of the latest Emperor, and it was concluded that Gill was the one. As a result, Gill was appointed as the President of the Secret Society when he was just 22 years old. Meanwhile, Urien, who had shown emotional instability, was overlooked for the position and instead became the Vice President under Gill. However, Urien eventually challenged Gill for the presidency and emerged victorious, thus becoming the new leader of the Secret Society. Surprisingly, Gill was not demoted but was elevated to a higher rank - he became the new Emperor and messiah of the organization.

In the final moments of A Shadow Falls, Gill made a notable appearance. It was at this crucial juncture that Helen, who was secretly disguised as Gill's faithful secretary Kolin, approached him with the news of Shadaloo's demise and M. Bison's ultimate defeat at the hands of Ryu. With a calm yet determined demeanor, Gill acknowledged the altered outcome but remained resolute in his own ambitions. Without divulging any specifics, he hinted at his imminent departure to an undisclosed location, leaving us all intrigued and curious about the true extent of his plans.

2nd Impact[]

During Gill's leadership, the Secret Society experienced a significant growth in both influence and wealth. They strategically acquired capital and estates through a multitude of business dealings, further solidifying their power. One notable instance was when they came into possession of a distinctive Jaguar car, which had been inherited from Dudley's father, a renowned British heavyweight boxing champion. In a bid to reclaim this automotive heirloom, Dudley himself, being aware of Gill's reputation, challenged him to a fight. Recognizing Dudley's formidable fighting skills, Gill respectfully agreed to return the cherished car. He understood that, in the grand scheme of his organization's vast resources, the value of the car was negligible and inconsequential.

Before the World Warrior Tournament, Gill engaged in a fierce battle against an esteemed military martial arts instructor named Tom. Their confrontation was so intense that Tom ended up being severely injured and had to be rushed to the hospital. Little did Gill know, Tom’s devoted student and ward, Alex, was filled with both distress and fury upon witnessing the devastating state of his master. Motivated by a burning desire for retribution, Alex clandestinely entered the highly esteemed World Warrior Tournament with the sole purpose of seeking revenge on Gill for the harm he had inflicted upon Tom.

The Secret Society, an enigmatic organization, persisted in their endeavors to manipulate human genetics and carry out invasive mutations. They employed various methods such as abducting individuals against their will or fabricating new subjects altogether, all in the pursuit of their ambitious G-Project. This intricate series of experiments ultimately culminated in the birth of two extraordinary soldiers, Necro and Twelve, who were specifically engineered to serve as obedient pawns for the Secret Society's nefarious schemes (although Necro eventually broke free from their control). Tragically, as a consequence of this project, a young girl who happened to be under the protection of ICPO agent Chun-Li was also snatched away, becoming another victim of the Secret Society's relentless pursuit of power and dominance.

Despite his younger brother's interference, Gill, with the assistance of his loyal secretary Kolin, took charge and successfully orchestrated the grand World Warrior tournament. His ultimate goal was to identify individuals who possessed exceptional strength and were deemed deserving enough to contribute to the rebuilding of mankind following the impending apocalypse. Amidst the intense battles and fierce competition that unfolded during this momentous event, a significant task was assigned to Ibuki by her own clan - to retrieve the highly coveted G-Project files. As fate would have it, Gill unexpectedly decided to relinquish these files willingly, as the project was already in full swing, rendering the need for them obsolete.

Towards the conclusion of the tournament, an intriguing turn of events unfolded as Gill, the formidable competitor, was ultimately vanquished by the skillful Alex. Despite emerging as the victor of the tournament, Alex displayed an unexpected act of mercy by refraining from executing Gill in cold blood. This pivotal moment left an indelible impression on Gill, who astutely recognized a remarkable quality within Alex - a quality that held immense significance in the face of the impending apocalypse that loomed ominously on the horizon.

During the course of the tournament, there was a controversial incident involving Gill's supposed demise. It is still debated whether this event is considered canon or not. The unexpected turn of events occurred when Akuma launched a surprise attack on Gill, utilizing his powerful technique known as the Shun Goku Satsu, ultimately leading to Gill's death. However, to the astonishment of those witnessing the battle, Gill managed to resurrect himself shortly after Akuma departed from the scene.

The news of this hierarchical discrepancy strikes Urien like a thunderbolt, leaving him both outraged and deeply dissatisfied. All his efforts, ambition, and triumph seem to have been in vain as he grapples with the bitter reality that his ultimate goal of becoming the President has been overshadowed by Gill's newfound status as the all-powerful Emperor. As the dust settles and the euphoria of victory begins to fade, Urien is suddenly confronted with an unexpected revelation. In a cruel twist of fate, he discovers that the President's position, which he so vehemently desired, pales in comparison to the Emperor's rank within their organization's intricate hierarchy. To his dismay and utter consternation, Urien realizes that his recently promoted brother, Gill, holds an even more superior position than his own. In a bold move to assert his authority and secure his position as the President, Urien takes a daring step by challenging his own brother, Gill, to a high-stakes match. His intention is crystal clear - to showcase his unparalleled superiority and prove his worthiness for the coveted title. However, much to everyone's surprise, Gill, in a shocking twist, deliberately throws the match in favor of Urien, bestowing upon him the prestigious role of the President. This unexpected turn of events plunges Urien into a whirlpool of conflicting emotions. His initial elation is swiftly replaced by a potent mix of frustration, resentment, and a burning sense of injustice. The realization that he was merely a pawn in a larger game, used by Gill to secure his own ascension, fuels the flames of his indignation. Urien's mind races, attempting to comprehend the full extent of the implications. The taste of victory has turned sour, leaving a bitter aftertaste of disappointment. He questions the very foundations of the organization he once revered, grappling with feelings of betrayal and a gnawing sense of inadequacy. As Urien reflects on his journey thus far, he is faced with a formidable decision.

The Emperor's refusal to turn around becomes a metaphor for his unwillingness to confront the past. He is a man whose gaze is fixed firmly ahead, focused solely on the future and the pursuit of further conquests. This determination to keep moving forward, without ever looking back, is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. As the prologue draws to a close, we are left with a sense of anticipation and intrigue. The Emperor's quest for power and his relentless ambition have set the stage for a gripping and unpredictable journey that will test his resolve and shape the destiny of his empire. The stage is set, and the reader is left eagerly awaiting the unfolding of this grand saga.

Prologue - 'The Emperor Doesn't Look Back'[]

Following the events of Street Fighter III, Gill makes his first appearance alongside his secretary Kolin. It is revealed that Gill had requested a match against G in order to test his own strength and abilities. Additionally, Gill wanted his efforts to be witnessed by people all over the world through a live video stream. However, Gill is concerned about a prophecy that he had heard before the match, as it does not mention G. Despite this, Gill defeats G and then proceeds to question him about their connection during the match. G responds by stating that their visions are one and the same, as both of them are earthlings. G further claims that their ultimate desire is to merge with the Earth. When G declares himself as the President of Earth, Gill experiences a sense of familiarity with G's power. Meanwhile, Gill's younger brother Urien watches the battle and becomes infuriated. He unleashes his anger by smashing a monitor with his fist and demands that Kolin brings Gill to him. Reluctantly, Kolin agrees to fulfill Urien's request.

Gill swiftly overpowers his brother in combat, causing his brother to feel a surge of anger and frustration. Gill confidently explains that his victory is due to the fact that every event in their prophecy has already been predetermined. In response, Urien expresses his desire to eradicate this cursed prophecy entirely. Gill scolds Urien, assuring him that his time as Gill's replacement will eventually come to fruition. This comment only intensifies Urien's fury, as he interprets it as an insult. Gill proceeds to belittle his brother, claiming that Urien will never be able to replace him or serve any purpose, as Gill himself is destined to fulfill the desires of the Secret Society as their Emperor. Despite Urien's seething rage, Gill enlightens him about the long-awaited wish that he must fulfill. Gill promises that once this prophecy and the obligations that accompany it are gone, Urien will be free to live wherever he pleases. Dismissing Urien with a hint of disdain, Gill walks away while his brother continues to utter his name in a fit of uncontrollable rage.

Personality[]

Gill is presented as a cult leader who envisions himself as a benevolent and compassionate ruler over his deserving followers, reminiscent of a Cult of Personality. In his worldly pursuits, he exudes an air of majesty, impressiveness, and charisma. However, it is important to note that Gill is not without his imperfections. At times, he can be arrogant, haughty, disdainful, manipulative, and even exhibit draconic and elitist tendencies, especially when at his worst. His cult employs immoral and Machiavellian methods such as kidnapping, coercion, DNA manipulation, brainwashing, and utilizing extreme force, similar to the notorious organization Shadaloo. These tactics are employed to handpick individuals who fit their criteria, and they have played a significant role in various global events and criminal enterprises, all in pursuit of their objectives. Gill is even willing to take the lives of innocent individuals to achieve his ultimate ambition. He justifies his actions by aligning himself with the supremacist exceptionalism held by the Secret Society, claiming that his faults and flaws are absolved and surpassed by the same ideology. This includes embracing a god complex and using the notion of self-improvement as an excuse to evade moral responsibility, asserting that his status as Emperor exempts him from such obligations.

According to additional materials and Menat, it is evident that Gill possesses a deep passion for acquiring knowledge and honing his skills in various artistic and spiritual pursuits, particularly in the realm of martial arts. Similar to Ryu, Gill aspires to be recognized as the strongest individual in the world, driven by an unwavering determination. However, their paths diverge in one crucial aspect. While Ryu embarks on a soul-searching journey, traversing to every corner of the globe to comprehend the profound essence of the fighting spirit that transcends geographical boundaries, Gill's primary objective is to amass power and prestige. He seeks to strengthen the influence of the Secret Society, a mysterious group, and uphold their questionable beliefs surrounding the Messiah. Gill's self-perception as a deity further distorts his motivations, leading him astray in his quest for power and spiritual growth.

When it comes to accomplishments, Gill frequently experiences defeat, either to accomplish a grander objective or as a gesture of admiration for his opponent's combat skills.

Based on the win-quotes in Street Fighter V, it becomes evident that Gill, the character in question, possesses a deep level of respect for his adversaries. Not only does he engage in combat, but he also offers insightful advice to other fighters, showcasing his genuine interest in their growth and improvement. Interestingly, despite his disdain for these villains, Gill also displays a paradoxical sense of concern for his own brother. This concern is evident through subtle hints, such as the possibility of granting his brother's death to provide him with peace or even accelerating the unfolding of prophecies to restore their lives to their former state. These glimpses into Gill's character story suggest a complex and intricate relationship with his brother, one that is fraught with conflicting emotions and desires. However, it is interesting to note that Gill exhibits a distinct disdain towards certain individuals within the villainous realm, such as M. Bison, Kage, Balrog, F.A.N.G, and Urien. This animosity towards fellow antagonists reveals a strong sense of moral alignment and a refusal to align himself with those who embody darkness and malevolence. In summary, Gill's win-quotes in Street Fighter V shed light on his multifaceted personality. While he exudes respect and offers guidance to his opponents, he also harbors disdain towards certain villains. Simultaneously, he displays a mysterious and intricate connection with his brother, characterized by a blend of concern, desire for peace, and an unwavering commitment to shaping their shared destiny.

Powers and Abilities[]

Gill possesses an extraordinary ability to control both fire and ice, resulting in a perfect balance between the two elements. This balance is not only evident in his physical appearance but also in his gameplay, as he has a unique trait that alters the element of certain attacks, such as Pyrokinesis and Cryokinesis, depending on which direction he is facing. This aspect of his gameplay is primarily a showcase of the immense power of the CPS-3 board and does not impact the damage or stun inflicted on opponents. Gill stands out as the first known character to wield ice-elemental attacks, with the only other character known to possess this ability being his secretary, Kolin, who received her powers from him. Additionally, Gill is also the first character to have attacks that vary in properties based on his facing direction.

Gill's overall style is centered around being offensive and disregarding anti-air attacks. Unlike Urien, Gill has the advantage of not needing to pause to charge his attacks, allowing him to easily overwhelm a careless opponent. As the final boss in Street Fighter III, Gill possesses much greater power compared to every other character (except for Shin Akuma). He deals heavy damage, inflicts a significant amount of stun, and is capable of executing long juggle combos. Additionally, Gill can cause block damage with his normal attacks, making it challenging to employ defensive strategies against him. This also means that achieving a perfect victory against Gill is virtually impossible. Due to these factors, he is often not allowed to be used in regular gameplay. However, it is worth noting that, despite his lack of combo extendability compared to his brother, Gill can still effectively utilize two of his Super Arts as counters at any given moment.

In the arcade version of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, the exclusive method to play as a clone of Gill is by utilizing Twelve's X.C.O.P.Y. However, in home releases of the game, Gill can be chosen as a playable character after being defeated by every fighter at least once. Alternatively, players can acquire Gill as downloadable content in the Online Edition of the game. Interestingly, Gill is also available for gameplay in Xbox Live matchmaking service games. However, it's important to note that he can only be utilized in player-matches and is not eligible for ranked-matches.

In Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Gill, a regular playable character, undergoes significant adjustments to ensure a more balanced gameplay experience among the entire cast. As a result, his power level is toned down while his move set expands with the addition of several new mechanics. However, when encountered as a boss in Arcade Mode, Gill maintains a level of challenge that is moderately heightened compared to his previous appearance in Street Fighter III. On the other hand, in Extra Battle Mode, players encounter Omega Gill, a variation boss who surpasses the difficulty level of his Street Fighter III counterpart. With heightened stats and fewer limitations, Omega Gill poses an even greater challenge to conquer.

Gill keeps a majority of his techniques from the Street Fighter III series, except for Psycho Headbutt. However, he gains new abilities involving fire and ice attacks alongside his Pyrokinesis and Cryokinesis projectiles. Unlike before, Gill no longer needs to switch sides to utilize specific moves and properties for exclusive damage. Instead, his playstyle now focuses on crossovers. Interestingly, his elemental attacks introduce a unique gameplay element called "anti-damage." This means that if an opponent is hit while suffering elemental damage, the opposite element's attack will cause more harm. For example, fire attacks will be more effective against ice, and vice versa.

Gill possesses a set of unique abilities that enhance his combat prowess. The first of these abilities is called Divine Comet, which allows him to unleash a potent elemental projectile upon his opponents. This projectile has the ability to inflict specific status effects on his adversaries. For instance, when Gill utilizes his fire comet, it engulfs his foes in scorching flames, gradually draining their health over time. Conversely, his ice comet has the power to halt the depletion of his opponent's stun gauge, providing Gill with a strategic advantage. Additionally, Gill possesses a second V-Skill known simply as Blocking. This skill functions similarly to the Parry system, enabling Gill to expertly defend against his opponent's attacks. By skillfully choosing to defend either high or low, Gill can effectively neutralize incoming strikes and diminish the impact of his adversary's assault. As a character often encountered as a challenging boss in arcade mode, Gill possesses a hidden Critical Art known as Meteor Strike. This devastating attack is only accessible to him and can unleash immense destructive power upon his opponents. Furthermore, Gill's arsenal is further augmented by his first and second V-Triggers: Primal Fire and Ice of Doom, respectively. These enhanced abilities bolster Gill's fire and ice-based attacks, empowering him with formidable strength. In addition to amplifying the potency of his existing moves, these V-Triggers also grant Gill two additional offensive maneuvers, further diversifying his combat capabilities.
