Giovanna Dei, also known as "Doctor Dark", is the protagonistic hidden villainess in the 1993 film, Madness.

Giovanna is the creator of the "Doctor Dark" comic book series, as well as a deranged serial killer who could not channel her mental illness; into her comic books forever; resulting in her homicidal rampage.

Giovanna was portrayed; by Monica Carpanese.

Biography[]

Giovanna had an abusive babysitter that; would repeatedly terrorized her; by locking her in a closet. The babysitter had lied to her a fictitious "Doctor Dark" entity would appear from the dark and tear out the eyes of bad children, as a way of scaring Giovanna; into obedience.

The trauma had; resulted in Giovanna developing dissociative identity disorder; which had led her to end up; with a homicidal personality; with an obsession for planning to kill the babysitter out of revenge.

As Giovanna kept that; alter-ego at bay and had refused to lose her future to that; sort of violence, she had redirected herself to becoming a comic book writer and designer. Her trauma and rage were put; into the fictitious supervillain "Doctor Dark", a serial killer of babysitters; who's eyes were gouged, as Giovanna had never confronted the babysitter. The comics were controversial, outraging much of the public from it's violent material; but also attracting disturbed fanbases.

After a while Giovanna could no longer hold her urges at bay anymore, and her alter-ego would take over periodically and dress in a Doctor Dark uniform to hunt young women; who were babysitting, as Giovanna could never track down the woman that; terrorized her.

Giovanna had killed two babysitters through the alter-ego, sedating them; before stabbing them and mutilating their eyes; with broken shards she left had lodged in the women's heads. The public was incensed; but the comics got more attention.

Giovanna had then started to get calls from a stalker fan, presumed to be the killer. To; make matters worse, the women's eyes were left in Giovanna's home. Reporter Lorenzo Calligari was arrested in the costume well trying to kill Giovanna's boyfriend and manager, Nico Manelli. Although he was confirmed to be the stalker leaving the phone calls, he was ruled out as the killer.

In the meantime, Giovanna's alter-ego took over and had wanted top cover her tracks, so she had killed her editor, Emy and faked her death as a suicide to throw off police. When publicist Marzio Mannino had found evidence in Giovanna's home; proving that; she was the killer, Giovanna stabbed him to death. Nico had realized that; Giovanna was the killer, so he had gathered the evidence in a box and had wrapped Marzio's remains in plastic to temporarily hide him in the house.

Giovanna and Nico then planned a romantic sailing trip, where Nico threw the evidence; into the sea. The police; by then had suspected Giovanna and in turn, they had found Marzio dead at the house and set out to follow the couple.

Giovanna had revealed herself; when she had another breakdown, stabbing the captain to death and attacking Nico. She struggled to keep as herself and not switch; into the alter-ego; which was also intermixed; with her flashbacks to her traumatic childhood. Nico had tried to stop her; by confessing his disposal of evidence to protect her; but; when Giovanna still had tried to kill him, he had stabbed her once; which was enough for her to die. The police had arrived hearing Nico scream in outrage over losing Giovanna.
